Impact of short-term climate variation and hydrology change on thermal structure and water quality of a canyon-shaped, stratified reservoir.

Climate variation can have obvious effects on hydrologic conditions, which in turn can have direct consequences for the thermal regime and quality of water for human use. In this research, weekly surveys were conducted from 2011 to 2013 to investigate how changes of climate and hydrology affect the thermal regime and water quality at the Heihe Reservoir. Our results show that the hydrology change during the flooding season can both increase the oxygen concentration and accelerate the consumption of dissolved oxygen. Continuous heavy rainfall events occurred in September 2011 caused the mixing …

Lateral and air-water inorganic carbon and methane fluxes in a small Arctic river: Seasonal variations and the connections with local hydrology.

The importance of rivers to the global carbon cycle is well recognized, and the need for more measurements from historically understudied sy … he onset on breakup respectively. DIC/CO2 and CH4 fluxes in Freshwater Creek are connected to local hydrology, thus changes to the water cycle with climate change will influence the timing and magnitude of carbon fluxes in this system. Our detailed account of seasonal variability will be a useful framework for similar systems that cannot be monitored all ye …

Hydrology Predominates Over Harvest History and Landscape Variation to Control Water Quality and Disinfection Byproduct Formation Potentials in Forested Pacific Coast Watersheds.

Despite the global importance of forested watersheds as sources of drinking water, few studies have examined the effects of forestry on drin … g., slash burning), or soils with low organic carbon storage. This study suggests that variation in hydrology predominates over harvest history and soil characteristics to drive water quality and DBP-FPs on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

From drivers to damage: A conceptual framework for integrated flood risk assessment of inland hydrological assets.

Flood risk in inland hydrological systems stems from dynamic interactions among drivers, exposure pathways, and vulnerabilities. Yet, prevailing assessment methods treat these dimensions in isolation, failing to capture cascading and compound effects. This study develops a novel conceptual framework for integrated flood risk assessment that establishes systematic linkages from drivers to damage across inland hydrological environmental assets (IHEAs). The framework structures hazards into five thematic domains, namely sediment dynamics, hydrological forces, pollution and nutrient surges, vegeta

Groundwater microbial community structure under contrasting hydrological conditions in a sulfate-rich karst aquifer.

Karst aquifers represent dynamic subsurface environments where hydrological fluctuations and redox variability can strongly influence groundwater microbiomes and associated biogeochemical processes. However, microbial sulfur cycling in sulfate-rich karst aquifers remains poorly understood, particularly from a genome-resolved perspective that links hydrochemical gradients to microbial metabolic potential. Here, we investigated how hydrochemical heterogeneity and contrasting hydrological conditions relate to microbial community composition and sulfur-cycling potential in the Irecê Basin karst aq

A practitioner-friendly approach to quantifying the hydrologic benefits of city-scale distributed green stormwater infrastructure.

The practice of green stormwater infrastructure (GI) is rapidly advancing. However, there remain complex challenges to upscaling its practice from localized installations to city-scale distributed systems. The purpose of this work is to address technical challenges associated with upscaling GI by demonstrating a practitioner-friendly modeling approach for quantifying hydrologic benefits that is sensitive to GI placement within a cityscape and actionable with the common tools of practice. The approach is demonstrated for an urban coastal community in Georgia, USA, with a distributed hydrodynami

Design storm estimation for flood risk assessment in the temperate Himalayan basin using hydrological modelling.

Flood frequency analysis and hydrological modelling are crucial for water resource management and flood mitigation, especially in regions vulnerable to extreme weather. This study utilises the HEC-HMS hydrological model to simulate rainfall-runoff processes and generate design storms for various return periods across 24 sub-watersheds of the Jhelum Basin, Kashmir. The model setup includes rainfall transformation using the ModClark method, baseflow estimation through the Linear Reservoir Method, and flood routing via the Muskingum approach. Satellite-based gridded rainfall data and sub-basin-sp

Assessing climate change impact on watershed hydrological processes and stream temperature by considering CO2 emissions.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a critical indicator influencing climate change and have significant impacts on the health of riverine ecosystems. The effects of CO2 emissions on streamflow and stream temperature have not been explicitly considered in process-based models, which limits the models' capability to simulate streamflow and stream temperature under varying CO2 concentration scenarios. This study modified an equilibrium temperature model and a CO2 effect model to overcome this limitation, which were subsequently coupled with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The cou

Microbial-mediated CH4 and CO2 emissions and environmental controls in the fluvial sediment across hydrological seasons.

Fluvial sediments are recognized as critical sources of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, the interactions between microbial communities and carbon emissions in these sediments remain poorly understood. This study investigated carbon fluxes at the water-air interface in the mainstream of the Liao River, integrating environmental parameters and microbial communities within sediments to elucidate seasonal differences in carbon cycling mechanisms. The results highlighted the wet season as a hot period for CH4 and CO2 emissions, with fluxes in the lower reach (CH4: 78.6 ±

Assessing Flooding from Changes in Extreme Rainfall: Using the Design Rainfall Approach in Hydrologic Modeling.

Quantifying future changes in extreme events and associated flooding is challenging yet fundamental for stormwater managers. Along the U.S. Atlantic Coast, Eastern North Carolina (ENC) is frequently exposed to catastrophic floods from extreme rainfall that is typically associated with tropical cyclones. This study presents a novel approach that uses rainfall data from five dynamically and statistically downscaled (DD and SD) global climate models under two scenarios to visualize a potential future extent of flooding in ENC. Here, we use DD data (at 36-km grid spacing) to compute future changes

Design and hydrologic performance estimation of highway filter drains using a novel analytical probabilistic model.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are nature-based methods of managing urban stormwater runoff. Although they are widely used, some SuDS, such as highway filter drains (HFDs), are understudied with respect to sizing and performance. For the first time, we developed an analytical probabilistic model (APM) that can be used to design and estimate the hydrologic performance of HFDs. Unlike the conventionally used design-storm based or continuous simulation approaches, our APM can directly calculate the runoff capture ratios of HFDs using closed-form analytical equations. Validation of the APM pr

Multi-purpose reservoir operation oncomitant with estimating hydropower potential using multifarious hydrological models.

The research aims at determining the optimal release rule to increase the capacity of Rib reservoir. The reservoir inflow using HBV-light hydrological model embracing optimal reservoir operation through HEC-ResSim model were used to prepare an optimum operational plan. The potential of the river for hydropower generation prioritise the demand at a specified level regarding storage capacity (m3), level of reservoir (m), and the relation between inflow and outflow of the reservoir. From the model performance features, the coefficient of correlation (R2) and Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) were d

Influence of hydrologic and anthropogenic factors on the abundance variability of enteropathogens in the Ganges estuary, a cholera endemic region.

This study deals with the influence of water physico-chemical properties, tides, rainfall and fecal pollution on the abundance of enteropathogens in a main distributary of the Ganges, in the endemic cholera belt of West Bengal. Between January and June 2011, water and sediments were sampled from two sites of the Hooghly River by Kolkata and Diamond Harbour. Counts of cultivable Vibrio (CVC, from~10(2) to~10(5)CFU/L) and total bacteria (TBC, from~10(5) to~10(9)CFU/L) increased with water temperature (17°C to 37°C). A combination of variations in tidal height, salinity and turbidity had a distin

Hydrological modelling of snail dispersal patterns in Msambweni, Kenya and potential resurgence of Schistosoma haematobium transmission.

Urinary schistosomiasis is an important source of human morbidity in Msambweni, Kenya, where the intermediate host snail, Bulinus nasutus is found in ponds and water pools. In the past, aquatic habitats in the area have been studied separately; however, recent collections of B. nasutus snails and shells indicated that many of these ponds are in fact connected during and following sufficient rains. Satellite imagery and a geographical information system (GIS) were used to survey the main water courses and potential drainage routes, to locate potential source populations of snails and to determi

Long-term climate and hydrologic regimes shape stream invertebrate community responses to a hurricane disturbance.

Disturbances can produce a spectrum of short- and long-term ecological consequences that depend on complex interactions of the characteristics of the event, antecedent environmental conditions, and the intrinsic properties of resistance and resilience of the affected biological system. We used Hurricane Harvey's impact on coastal rivers of Texas to examine the roles of storm-related changes in hydrology and long-term precipitation regime on the response of stream invertebrate communities to hurricane disturbance. We detected declines in richness, diversity and total abundance following the sto…

Regional quality analysis of the hydrological environment with an improved random forest model based on the chimpanzee algorithm.

High-precision evaluations of water environment quality are highly important for improving the accuracy of early warning systems of regional water pollution risk and improving the regional water environment. This paper employs the chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) to enhance the traditional random forest model, resulting in the chimp optimization algorithm-random forest (ChOA-RF) water quality assessment model for evaluating the Jiansanjiang area in Heilongjiang Province, China. The results show that the overall water environment in Jiansanjiang has the following characteristics: "The water

Terrestrial evidence for ocean forcing of Heinrich events and subglacial hydrologic connectivity of the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

During the last glacial period, the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) underwent episodes of rapid iceberg discharge, recorded in ocean sediments as "Heinrich events" (HEs). Two competing models attempt to describe the stimulus for HEs via either internal ice sheet oscillations or external ocean-climate system forcing. We present a terrestrial record of HEs from the northeastern LIS that strongly supports ocean-climate forcing. Subglacial carbonate precipitates from Baffin Island record episodes of subglacial melting coincident with the three most recent HEs, resulting from acceleration of nearby mari

Impacts of land use, climate change and hydrological model structure on nitrate fluxes: Magnitudes and uncertainties.

Nitrate pollution and eutrophication are of increasing concern in agriculturally dominated regions, and with projected future climate changes, these issues are expected to worsen for both surface and groundwater. Changes in land use and management have the potential to mitigate some of these concerns. However, to what extent these changes will interact is unknown, and are associated with significant uncertainty. Here, we estimate nitrate fluxes and contributions of major uncertainty sources (variance decomposition analysis) affecting nitrate leaching from the root zone and river load from grou

Refining the concept of hydrological connectivity for large floodplain systems: Framework and implications for eco-environmental assessments.

Recent years, the hydrological connectivity has gained popularity in various research fields, however, its definition and threshold effects at a system scale have not received adequate attention. The current research proposes a promising framework to refine the concept of surface hydrological connectivity by combining hydrodynamic modeling experiments, threshold effects and geostatistical connectivity analysis, exemplified by the flood-pulse-influenced Poyang Lake floodplain system (China). To enhance the inherent linkage between hydrological connectivity and eco-environments, total connectivi
