Membranous nephropathy after multiple Hymenoptera stings: a case report.

An association between Hymenoptera (bee and wasp) stings and nephrotic syndrome has been rarely reported. We report a case of nephrotic syndrome after multiple Hymenoptera stings, and membranous nephropathy was later diagnosed by a kidney biopsy. The patient was a 79-year-old woman who was stung by Hymenoptera at seven sites on her body. A weight gain of 3.7 kg was observed in the patient at 1 week after being stung, and she had considerable edema in both lower extremities. A urine protein concentration of 14.8 g/g creatinine and a serum albumin concentration of 1.7 g/dL led to the diagnosis o

Clinical aspects of hymenoptera venom allergy and venom immunotherapy.

Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) is the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis in Europe, accounting for most of the severe reactions occurring in adults, and being the second cause of anaphylaxis in children. Prevention of further episodes in patients who developed a systemic reaction (SR) is based on the correct management of the allergic emergency, the referral to an allergist for a correct diagnosis, prescription of adrenaline auto-injectors (AAI) and specific venom immunotherapy (VIT), if recommended. Diagnosis is based on the classification of the type of reaction, confirmation of an IgE-medi

Allergic reactions to Hymenoptera stings in Turkish school children.

BACKGROUND: Reported prevalence of the insect stings and rates of allergic reactions vary among studies. The aim of the present study was to carry out the first epidemiological study on the prevalence of Hymenoptera allergy among school children in Izmir, Turkey. METHODS: We planned to reach 6100 children, assuming the frequency of allergic reactions to Hymenoptera stings as 20%. Thirty-seven and eight schools were chosen from rural and urban areas, respectively. Parents were asked to complete a questionnaire which included questions about history of insect stings and the presence of atopic d

Anaphylaxis caused by Hymenoptera stings: from epidemiology to treatment.

Hymenoptera venom allergy occasionally causes fatal reactions. The prevalence of systemic reactions (SRs) is 0.3-8.9%, with anaphylaxis in 0.3-42.8% of cases. Factors contributing to reaction severity include older age, insect type, a previous less severe SR, preexisting diseases, concomitant treatments, mast cell diseases and elevated baseline tryptase serum concentration. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is highly effective, as shown by sting challenge and spontaneous field stings. Indications for VIT are based on history of an SR, positive diagnostic tests, natural history and established risk fac

Winged hymenoptera: Discordance between In vitro and In vivo sensitization.

Background: An Hymenoptera venom allergy diagnosis requires sting-triggered systemic reaction symptoms and evidence of venom-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) through skin or serologic testing. A lack of concordance between skin and serologic testing has been reported previously; using these tests in a complementary fashion has been emphasized in published guidelines. Objective: We assessed skin and serologic venom-specific IgE testing discordance and factors that impact the testing. Methods: A retrospective review of patients with allergist-diagnosed winged Hymenoptera venom allergy prescribed

The Diversity of Hymenoptera on Pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.).

Hymenoptera play important ecological roles in agroecosystems as parasitoids, predators, and pollinators. This study investigated the species composition and diversity of Hymenoptera in a conventionally managed pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.) orchard in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, from February 2025 to February 2026. A total of 8446 specimens were collected using Malaise traps and sweep netting, belonging to 11 superfamilies, 37 families, and 191 morphospecies. The community was dominated by parasitoids (140 morphospecies, 73.30%), followed by predators (30 morphospecies, 15.7

Comparative anatomy of the thoracic muscles of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea).

Bees exhibit a remarkable anatomical diversity, with phenotypic traits that reflect broad evolutionary patterns and specific adaptations. Understanding these patterns requires examining key anatomical features, such as thoracic musculature, which drives morpho-functional variation and underscores their extensive phenotypic diversity. The thorax (or 'mesosoma,' as it can be referred to in the context of bees and other apocritan Hymenoptera) serves as a power core, housing muscles responsible for leg, wing, and also head and metasomal articulation movements. Despite the role of the thoracic musc

Current practices in diagnosis of Hymenoptera venom allergy in Poland.

INTRODUCTION: Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) is associated with a high risk of anaphylaxis. Effective treatment of HVA patients requires allergologists' familiarity with the latest HVA recommendations. AIM: Evaluation of current practices in HVA diagnosis in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey questionnaire was conducted in 32 HVA centres in Poland. RESULTS: The response rate was 97%. There were 1829 patients evaluated due to HVA in 2015. Sixty six percent (n = 21) of the centres used skin prick tests, out which 90% (n = 19) used 100 µg/ml of the venom extract as the highest concentrati

[Tricky cases in in-vitro diagnostics of hymenoptera venom allergy].

BACKGROUND: Hymenoptera stings give rise to anaphylactic reactions in 1.2-3.5 % of the population. The risk of repeat anaphylaxis following subsequent stings is greatly reduced through immunotherapy with the culprit venom. A prerequisite for allergen-specific immunotherapy is a precise diagnostic work-up. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: We review the efficacy of currently available in-vitro diagnostic tests for hymenoptera venom allergy in different clinical scenarios. METHODS: A targeted literature review in PubMed and a review of the current guideline on hymenoptera venom allergy were performed. For

Venom immunotherapy in patients with mastocytosis and hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis.

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is typically suspected in patients with cutaneous mastocytosis (CM). In recent years, the presence of clonal mast cells (MCs) in a subset of patients with systemic symptoms associated with MC activation in the absence of CM has been reported and termed monoclonal MC activation syndromes or clonal systemic MC activation syndromes. In these cases, bone marrow (BM) MC numbers are usually lower than in SM with CM, there are no detectable BM MC aggregates, and serum baseline tryptase is often <20 µg/l; thus, diagnosis of SM in these patients should be based on careful eva

Virulence strategies in parasitoid Hymenoptera as an example of adaptive diversity.

Parasitoids are mostly insects that develop at the expense of other arthropods, which will die as a result of the interaction. Their reproductive success thus totally depends on their ability to successfully infest their host whose reproductive success relies on its own ability to avoid or overcome parasitism. Such intense selective pressures have resulted in extremely diverse adaptations in parasitoid strategies that ensure parasitism success. For instance, wasp-specific viruses (polydnaviruses) are injected into the host by parasitoid females to modulate its physiology and immunity. This art

Evolutionary dynamics of a mitochondrial rearrangement "hot spot" in the Hymenoptera.

The arrangement of tRNA genes at the junction of the cytochrome oxidase II and ATPase 8 genes was examined across a broad range of Hymenoptera. Seven distinct arrangements of tRNA genes were identified among a group of wasps that have diverged over the last 180 Myr (suborder Apocrita); many of the rearrangements represent evolutionarily independent events. Approximately equal proportions of local rearrangements, inversions, and translocations were observed, in contrast to vertebrate mitochondria, in which local rearrangements predominate. Surprisingly, homoplasy was evident among certain types

Kounis Syndrome Triggered by Hymenoptera Stings and Exacerbated by Streptokinase.

BACKGROUND: Kounis syndrome (KS) is an allergy-mediated acute coronary syndrome that is frequently under-recognized and potentially life threatening. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old man developed an inferior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction following a bee swarm attack. Standard thrombolysis with streptokinase triggered severe hemodynamic collapse and systemic hemorrhage. Upon recognizing KS, management was shifted to steroids and antihistamines, leading to complete recovery. Recurrence was documented 8 years later following an ant bite. DISCUSSION: This case illustrates how standard a

The brain atlas of a subsocial bee reflects that of eusocial Hymenoptera.

The evolutionary transition from solitary life to group-living in a society with cooperative brood care, reproductive division of labor and morphological castes is associated with increased cognitive demands for task-specialization. Associated with these demands, the brains of eusocial Hymenoptera divide transcriptomic signatures associated with foraging and reproduction to different populations of cells and also show diverse astrocyte and Kenyon cell types compared with solitary non-hymenopteran insects. The neural architecture of subsocial bees, which represent evolutionary antecedent states

Prevalence of mastocytosis and Hymenoptera venom allergy in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis is a risk factor for Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis (HVA). Current guidelines recommend measuring tryptase in patients with HVA and that those with mastocytosis pursue lifelong venom immunotherapy (VIT). Available data on HVA and mastocytosis largely derive from European single-center studies, and the prevalence of HVA with and without mastocytosis in the United States is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the prevalence of HVA and mastocytosis in the United States using an insurance claims database and evaluate the impact of mastocytosis on VIT in patients wit

Hymenoptera allergy and anaphylaxis: are warmer temperatures changing the impact?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change has brought about many changes in our ecosystem. Prolongation of pollen seasons has been reported, related to earlier frost off in the spring and later onset of frost on in the fall. This review considers recent global evidence that stinging insects are redistributing toward the poles, thereby potentially increasing human exposure and risk of sting events. RECENT FINDINGS: With changing climate, particularly climate warming, range expansion of insects is occurring in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Likewise, stinging insects, such as Hymenoptera a

[Standards and pitfalls of in-vitro diagnostics of Hymenoptera venom allergy].

In patients with a history of anaphylactic sting reactions, in-vitro tests are performed in order to demonstrate venom sensitization to the causative venom. Measurement of specific IgE-antibodies (sIgE) to the natural composite venom represents the standard in-vitro method to demonstrate venom sensitization. If sensitization to the composite venom cannot be demonstrated, one may determine sIgE to recombinant allergen compounds, in order to demonstrate sensitization to molecular venom allergens. Moreover, several cellular tests are available to confirm venom sensitization. Herein basophils, whi

Evaluation of basophil activation in mastocytosis with Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Basophil activation tests (BATs) have been demonstrated to be useful in detecting IgE-mediated sensitization by measuring basophil activation surface markers (CD63 and CD203c). Hymenoptera venom is one of the best known mediators-release trigger in patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM). The aim of this study was to investigate the use of BATs as an additional diagnostic tool in patients with mastocytosis suffering from hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis (HVA). METHODS: A total of 22 patients with history of HVA and SM, together with a group of 11 patients with HVA in whom SM was rul
