[Endometrial hyperplasia: A review].

Endometrial hyperplasias can be divided into two categories based on the presence or absence of cytological atypia and further classified as simple or complex according to the extent of architectural abnormalities. They are usually diagnosed because of irregular bleeding in perimenopause. Hysteroscopy with a biopsy gives a more accurate diagnosis than transvaginal ultrasonography, sonohysterography, or blind curettage. Endometrial hyperplasias with no cytological atypia, regarded as a response to unopposed endogenous estrogenic stimulation, are normally treated with progestins. The intra-uteri…

Pregnancy and gingival hyperplasia.

The clinical manifestation of plaque-induced gingival inflammation is modulated by the hormonal imbalances during pregnancy. Different forms of severity have been described. During the first months of the pregnancy, the persistent influence of the plaque induces catarrhal inflammation of the gingiva that serves as a base for the development of hyperplastic gingivitis during the last months, modulated by the cumulating hormonal stimuli. In non-controlled cases a development of pyogenic granuloma can be observed. This lesion is rarely observed in women with poor oral hygiene in regions with loca

Neural hyperplasia in appendix.

One hundred fifty histologically non-inflamed appendices from patients with acute appendicular pain were studied for mucosal and submucosal neurogenous hyperplasia using simple histochemical stain. Mucosal and submucosal neural hyperplasia was found in 69.34% of cases. The severity of submucosal hyperplasia was more compared to mucosal. The neural hyperplasia of higher grade was found mainly in the age group between 21 to 40 years. The appendicular pain in three unwarranted surgical cases may be either due to neural hyperplasia or substances liberated from closely associated neuroendocrine/mas…

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (AHE) is a distinct clinical and pathologic entity that demonstrates proliferation of endothelial cells associated with varying degrees of lymphocytic, histiocytic, and eosinophilic infiltration. Lymphoid hyperplasia with germinal centers often is present in older lesions and the patients may have an associated blood eosinophilia. Multiple deep nodules developed in a young man on the palmar aspect of the left hand, and subsequently the forehead, histologically diagnostic of AHE. Direct immunofluorescence of the tumor removed from the forehead demonst…

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the endocervix.

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the endocervix or "tunnel clusters" have long been felt to be the result of obstruction of endocervical gland-like clefts. However, in some instances it is possible to demonstrate that obstruction is not present. The histologic features of this entity are similar to those of benign mucinous neoplasms of the upper genital tract, and therefore it seems reasonable to suspect that adenomatous hyperplasia is, in fact, a proliferative metaplasia or neoplasia of the endocervical gland epithelium. While clinically unimportant, we believe that this is an additional example of…

[Hyperplasia-associated cutaneous paraneoplasia].

BACKGROUND: Hyperplasia-associated cutaneous paraneoplasia is an important differential diagnosis in everyday clinical practice. An early diagnosis of the underlying tumor disease can significantly improve the patient's prognosis. PATHOGENESIS: Hyperplasia is probably mainly cytokine-mediated. The primary tumor and/or the metastases release growth factors and transcription factors which, via epidermal growth factors, lead to hyperproliferation of keratinocytes. ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS MALIGNA: Symmetrical mainly intertriginous hyperpigmentation with partially verrucous hyperplasia and lichenifi…

Condylar hyperplasia: current thinking.

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia is a rare disease that causes facial asymmetry as a result of excessive vertical or horizontal growth, or both, of the mandibular condyle. Investigation should address the patient's concerns, and establish whether the disease is active with the use of single positron emission tomography (PET). Proportional reduction of the condyle arrests active disease and restores mandibular height, and any residual asymmetry can be corrected according to conventional orthognathic principles. We recommend the use of 3-dimensional virtual planning for such complex movements. Th…

Fistulizing nodular lymphoid hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (NLH) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a rare condition in adults. It is usually asymptomatic. Few complications have been described. AIM: We report an unusual clinical presentation of focal lymphoid hyperplasia of the GI. CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old female patient presented with a fistulizingdisease of the terminal ileum and the caecum complicated with an abscess of the lower right quadrant if the abdomen. CT-guided drainage with antibiotic therapy failed to control the abscess. Thus, surgery was undertaken and ileocaecal resection was performed.…

Congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia (lipoid CAH) is the most fatal form of CAH, as it disrupts adrenal and gonadal steroidogenesis. Most cases of lipoid CAH are caused by recessive mutations in the gene encoding steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR). Affected patients typically present with signs of severe adrenal failure in early infancy and 46,XY genetic males are phenotypic females due to disrupted testicular androgen secretion. The StAR p.Q258X mutation accounts for about 70% of affected alleles in most patients of Japanese and Korean ancestry. However, it is more prevalent (92.3…
