Incidence and geometric peculiarities of hypertrophy of the left ventricle of the heart (HLVH) were studied on the basis of findings from the echocardiographic investigation done in 86 patients with chronic glomerulonephritis (ChGN) with arterial hypertension (AH), with the renal function being preserved and at the early stages of renal insufficiency. HLVH was detected in 30.2% of the patients, in 80.8% of whom it was concentric, and in 19.2% eccentric, in 76%--symmetric and in 23.1%--asymmetric. Incidence of HLVH did not correlate with sex, clinical variant of ChGN, renal function status, and

We report a case of a 14 month old infant with severe stenosis of the pulmonary valve in whom the angiographic image suggested the presence of a right ventricular (RV) tumor mass. The patient was admitted because of clinical manifestations of heart failure. Right heart catheterization demonstrated a transvalvular pulmonary gradient and filling defects in the infundibulum compatible with an intracavitary mass. Two dimensional and Doppler echocardiography confirmed pulmonary stenosis and showed that the mass corresponded to hypertrophy of the anterior RV wall. The combination of two dimensional

The relations between some pressure and humoral factors, and some echocardiographic indexes of left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy were studied in 64 patients with essential hypertension. Fifty-seven percent of these patients showed echocardiographic evidence of LV hypertrophy (LV mass greater than 215 g). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that only mean blood pressure (BP) and circulating norepinephrine (NE) levels were significantly related to LV mass index in the group of patients with LV hypertrophy. However, mean BP was the only factor related to LV mass index in the subgroup

The inotropic responsiveness to adrenergic stimulation is diminished in hypertension associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This was shown in hypertrophied hearts from renal hypertensive rats (RHR) (two-kidney, one clip hypertension, Goldblatt) 6 weeks after renal artery clipping when compared to age-matched normotensive sham-operated controls (NR). The isoproterenol-stimulated inotropic responses (delta peak dP/dt) of isolated hearts perfused at constant pressure were significantly lower in RHR than in NR (p less than 0.001 by analysis of variance and covariance, including repeat

Fifty-three Japanese children with non-rheumatic myocarditis were investigated with regard to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which was assessed electrocardiographically. Follow-up periods ranged from 12 to 58 months with a mean of 22.8 months. Left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) evaluated echocardiographically was compared to the electrocardiographic findings of LVH. The overall prevalence of LVH was 30.2% (16 patients). In 3 patients, LVH was detected during the first examination. In the other patients, however, LVH was detected later during the follow-up periods. In all bu

This case series describes spontaneous resolution of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve, cessation of a dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and reverse cardiac remodeling in 4 young cats. Following initial presentation with or without congestive heart failure, subsequent rechecks documented resolution of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve and normalization of left heart dimensions. Those cats originally presented with congestive heart failure were successfully weaned off diuretic medications. Atenolol was prescribed to all 4 cats, and all remained on oral at

OBJECTIVES: In chronic kidney disease (CKD), high FGF23 concentrations are associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), cardiovascular events, and death. The associations of FGF23 with left ventricular mass (LVM) and LVH in the general population and the influence of CKD remains uncertain.
METHODS: C-terminal plasma FGF23 concentrations were measured, and LVM and LVH evaluated by echocardiogram among 2255 individuals ≥65 years in the Cardiovascular Health Study. Linear regression analysis adjusting for demographics, cardiovascular, and kidney related risk factors examined the associati

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in childhood is characterized by marked phenotypic heterogeneity and poses significant challenges in risk stratification for sudden cardiac death (SCD). We report the case of a 9.5-year-old girl in whom transthoracic echocardiography revealed progressive extreme interventricular septal hypertrophy (up to 33 mm; Z-score > +11), marked left atrial enlargement, reduced left ventricular cavity size, and significant left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Although repeated ambulatory Holter monitoring did not reveal ventricular arrhythmias, the patient exhibite

BACKGROUND: Cerebral ischemia is frequently detected after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and is associated with worse outcomes. Although the mechanism is uncertain, cerebral autoregulation impairment due to severe hypertension has been suggested from prior studies. We tested the hypothesis that more severe left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a marker of chronic hypertension-mediated organ damage, is associated with DWI lesions after ICH.
METHODS: Using a single-center observational cohort study, we included all patients with spontaneous ICH between 2009 an

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, and it is defined as an imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand. Coronary artery disease (CAD) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are two common causes of IHD that independently result in myocardial ischemia. CAD decreases myocardial blood and oxygen supply whereas LVH increases myocardial oxygen demand. The coexistence of both CAD and LVH results in a significant increase in oxygen demand while simultaneously lowering oxygen supply. Since hypertension is a shared predisposing condition for both CAD and LVH

Distinguishing physiological left ventricular hypertrophy of an athlete's heart from that of pathological left ventricular (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) can be difficult despite the advent of new imaging techniques. Nevertheless, the final diagnosis is of utmost importance as it will have a profound impact on an individual's life. A diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy essentially excludes an individual from sport and strenuous exertion and necessitates the need for further tests and treatment, as well as the screening of family members. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy remains the most common

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Human overnutrition has caused a rise in the prevalence of obesity in recent years. In addition to the deleterious effects of obesity during childhood, the long-term effects in adulthood have also been described. For instance, cardiovascular diseases, particularly left ventricular hypertrophy, and type 2 diabetes are among the diseases associated with a history of obesity. However, it remains uncertain during which period of life this association is established. Several authors have suggested that the early period of life is critical for the emergence of cardiac disorders.

Left ventricular hypertrophy is the main risk factor for development of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients on hemodialysis. Left ventricular hypertrophy is found in 75% of the patients treated with hemodialysis. Risk factors for left ventricular hypertrophy in patients on hemodialysis include: blood flow through arterial-venous fistula, anemia, hypertension, increased extracellular fluid volume, oxidative stress, microinflammation, hyperhomocysteinemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and disturbed calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Left ventricular pressure overload leads to pa

The prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) rises with severity of hypertension (HT), age, and obesity. Its prevalence ranges from 20% in mildly hypertensive patients to almost 100% in those with severe or complicated HT. However, the diagnosis of LVH is not straightforward, and the definitions and criteria used in clinical studies lack consistency. While many factors play a role in the onset and progression of LVH, blood pressure (BP) is recognized as a central factor. Twenty-four-hour BP measurements are more closely related to LVH than conventional BP readings taken in the clinicia

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is supposed to be a useful marker of cardiovascular complications during the course of hypertension. Authors compared the presence of heart failure, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and chronic atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients with and without left ventricular hypertrophy defined by echocardiography. Hospital records of 192 hypertensives treated in our medical department during years 1996-1999 were analysed. Left ventricular hypertrophy was defined by echocardiography (Penn convention) as left ventricular mass index > 134 g/m2 in men and > 1

BACKGROUND: Osteopontin (OP) has been identified in cultured rat cardiac fibroblasts, where it contributes to angiotensin II (AII)-induced remodeling processes; in cultured cardiomyocytes; and in macrophages in cardiac tissues with inflammation. However, the presence of OP has not been reported in histological sections of myocardial tissue. In the present study, we investigated (1) the regulation of OP mRNA expression in cultured rat cardiomyocytes; (2) the localization of OP mRNA in neonatal and adult normal and hypertrophied rat hearts; and (3) the histology of OP expression in myocardial sp
