Understanding how population structure shapes viral transmission remains challenging because most in vitro models assume well-mixed conditions and lack spatial structure. We present a Herd-Immunity-on-a-Chip (HIC) platform-a 444-chamber microfluidic network that recreates structured populations-and apply it to human coronavirus 229E infecting MRC-5 fibroblasts. By varying initial inoculum (I0), susceptible density (S0), cell motility, and the fraction of non-susceptible cells (U0), we decode how seeding, density, immunity and movement reshape outbreak trajectories. Increasing S0 or I0 raised l

The origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains enigmatic. It is likely to be a continuum resulting from inevitable mutations and recombination events. These genetic changes keep developing in the present epidemic. Mutations tending to deplete the genome in its cytosine content will progressively lead to attenuation as a consequence of Muller's ratchet, but this is counteracted by recombination when different mutants co-infect the same host, in particular, in clusters of infection. Monitoring as a function of time the genome sequences in closely related cases is critical to anticipate the future of

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to epidemiologically assess rubella herd immunity as a function of time, age and gender in Japan, with reference to the recent 2012-2014 rubella epidemic.
DESIGN: This study is a retrospective seroepidemiological analysis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The susceptible fraction of the population was examined as a function of age and time. The age at infection was assessed using reported case data.
RESULTS: Whereas 30 years ago rubella cases were seen only among children, the median (25-75th centiles) age of cases in 2014 was elevated to 32.0 (17.0-42.0) years among males and 27.

The global spread of COVID-19, particularly through cough symptoms, necessitates efficient diagnostic tools. COVID-19 patients exhibit unique cough sound patterns distinguishable from other respiratory conditions. This study proposes an advanced framework to detect and predict COVID-19 using deep learning from cough audio signals. Audio data from the COUGHVID dataset undergo preprocessing through fuzzy gray level difference histogram equalization, followed by segmentation with a U-Net model. Key features are extracted via Zernike Moments (ZM) and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). The Enh

OBJECTIVES: Analysis of national surveillance data and a seroepidemiologic investigation were conducted to elucidate the causes and epidemiologic characteristics of a measles outbreak in Taoyuan, Taiwan, 1994.
METHODS: Measles cases were identified through a national surveillance system. Reported cases and their physician or school nurses were interviewed to trace additional suspect cases and were sampled for serologic diagnosis. Measles-specific IgG and IgM were assayed. A confirmed case was defined as being positive for measles IgM test but not having received measles vaccination within the

Reconfiguration of the distribution network to determine its optimal configuration is a technical and low-cost method that can improve different characteristics of the network based on multi-criteria optimization. In this paper reconfiguration of unbalanced distribution networks is presented with the objective of power loss minimization, voltage unbalance minimization, voltage sag improvement, and minimizing energy not supplied by the customers based on fuzzy multi-criteria approach (FMCA) using new improved corona-virus herd immunity optimizer algorithm (ICHIOA). The voltage unbalances and vo

BACKGROUND: Qatar experienced a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic that disproportionately affected the craft and manual worker (CMW) population, who comprise 60% of the total population. This study aimed to assess ever and/or current infection prevalence in this population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted during July 26 to September 09, 2020, to assess both anti-SARS-CoV-2 positivity through serological testing and current infection positivity through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Associations with antibody and PC

The objective of this study was to identify factors related to the expansion of infection and prevention of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09. A retrospective non-randomized cohort study (from June 2009 to May 2010) on influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was conducted in a sample of residents from Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The cumulative incidence of the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and the pandemic vaccine effectiveness (VE) were estimated. The response rate was 53.5% (178,669/333,892). Overall, the odds ratio of non-vaccinated group to vaccinated group for cumulative incidence of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was 2.18 (95% c

For many years, invasive meningococcal disease in the Czech Republic occurred sporadically and was caused mainly by meningococci of serogroup B. In 1993, when a new clone (ET-15/37) emerged, the only phenotype found was C:2a:P1.2,5. In 1995, an antigenic variation of the ET-15/37 clone, B:2a:P1.2,5, occurred. The results of immunological surveys conducted in 1989 and 1996 were compared. A significantly higher proportion of 1996 sera than those collected in 1989 showed bactericidal antibodies against N. meningitidis B:2a:P1.2,5 (19.7 vs. 5.1%) and N. meningitidis C:2a:P1.2,5 (15.9 vs. 7.4%), co

Mathematical models and statistical analyses of epidemiological data are employed to assess the potential impact of mass vaccination on the incidences of cases of mumps infection and cases of mumps related complications. The analyses reveal that in the United Kingdom the average age at infection with the mumps virus is currently between 6-7 years and that the inter-epidemic period of the infection is approximately 3 years. The critical level of vaccine uptake to eliminate mumps virus transmission is predicted to be approximately 85% of each cohort of boys and girls by the age of 2 years. Analy

It is unclear how broadly aware parents are of the concept of herd immunity and whether parents consider community benefits of vaccination when making decisions about their child's vaccinations. We aimed to determine whether educating parents about community-level benefits of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination and local vaccination rates would impact concern about their child's risk of measles and risk of a measles outbreak. We conducted an electronic survey among Minnesota parents of children aged 6-18 years in August 2016. We assessed baseline knowledge of herd immunity, asked par

OBJECTIVE: Vaccination yields a direct effect by reducing infection, but also has the indirect effect of herd immunity: If many individuals are vaccinated, the immune population will protect unvaccinated individuals (social benefit). However, due to a vaccination's costs and risks, individual incentives to free-ride on others' protection also increase with the number of individuals who are already vaccinated (individual benefit). The objective was to assess the consequences of communicating the social and/or individual benefits of herd immunity on vaccination intentions. We assume that if soci

The death rate from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in 2022 was lower than the death rate in 2021, when the infection rate increased. Hybrid immunity provided by a combination of vaccination and infection, including asymptomatic infection, may confer effective protection against death. We explored the combined effect of asymptomatic infection and hybrid immunity by studying T-cell and antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2 among individuals treated in home health care services 6 months after SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection was demon

The purpose of this article is to analyse non-pharmaceutical approaches to control pandemics. Currently vaccines are our best hope to control the COVID-19 pandemic, but before the appearance of the first vaccines the available possibilities were much more limited. While most people worldwide were confined to their homes to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, some countries (most notably the United Kingdom) advocated infecting the majority of the community, aiming to achieve what has been called "herd immunity". This article focuses on two non-therapeutic strategies for dealing with deadly

In Germany, the seven-valent conjugate vaccine Prevenar is recommended for use in children at high risk of pneumococcal disease. Recent data suggest that giving conjugate vaccine to all children may lead to a decline in pneumococcal disease in unvaccinated adults, a phenomenon known as herd immunity. This analysis evaluated the cost and economic consequences in Germany of vaccinating (1) children at high risk, (2) all children when considering only benefits for vaccinated individuals and (3) all children when also considering herd immunity benefits. Costs in the model included vaccination, man

Horses naturally exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV) or vaccinated against WNV develop humoral immunity thought to be protective against development of clinical disease in exposed or infected animals. No reports evaluate the efficacy of passive transfer of naturally acquired specific WNV humoral immunity from dam to foal. The purpose of this study was to investigate passive transfer of naturally acquired immunity to WNV to foals born in a herd of semi-feral ponies, not vaccinated against WNV, in an endemic area, with many dams having seroconverted because of natural exposure. This study examines the potential clinical and economic benefits for adults arising from paediatric pneumococcal vaccination in the UK. A UK birth cohort model with a 10-year horizon and using a primary 4-dose paediatric 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) schedule was populated with 1999 morbidity and mortality data scaled up to the UK population. Herd immunity effects on adult pneumococcal hospital-treated pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia, but not on community-treated pneumonia, were calculated using the lower end of the confidence intervals published for the effects in the US

This study examined the impact of passive immunity at the herd level on survival probability during the first year of life for successful passive immunity (SPI) farms (n=19), <20% of the proportion of newborn calves with serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G concentrations of <10.0 g/L, and failure of passive immunity (FPI) farms (n=20) with ≥20%. The proportions of serum IgG concentrations on SPI farms were clearly shifted toward the high-concentration strata compared with FPI farms. SPI farms showed significantly (P<0.001) higher survival probability than FPI farms. These results suggest that having t
