Hypertrophic scar is marked by excess collagen accumulation secondary to an increased vascularization response in the scar and an increase in fibroblast cell density. It is currently the most debilitating long-term complication of the surviving burn patient, and at present, there is no routinely effective form of therapy. We report on the demonstration of nonspecific accumulation of indium-111 capromab pendetide (ProstaScint) in neurofibromas in a patient with a rising prostate-specific antigen level after prostatectomy. Although the immunoconjugate is targeted to a specific membrane antigen present in human prostate carcinoma, nonspecific uptake can occur in other entities. Indium-111 capromab pendetide scintigraphy is a valuable diagnostic tool that should always be interpreted within the context of the clinical history and the laboratory and radiologic findings to avoid misinterpretation.

PURPOSE: Cadherin-17 (CDH17) is a calcium-dependent cell adhesion protein that is overexpressed in several adenocarcinomas, including gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Mice were vaccinated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona or hardjo, or with the polysaccharide (PS) fraction of the LPS, or with an immunoconjugate of PS and diphtheria toxoid (DT). Maximum agglutinin titres were found 6-10 weeks after vaccination with LPS or PS-DT conjugate; the latter elicited antibody titres at least 10 times higher than those produced in response to LPS. Animals failed to react significantly to PS. Titres elicited by antigens of serovar pomona were higher than those elicited by serovar hardjo.

UNLABELLED: Malignant mesothelioma (MM), a rare form of cancer is often associated with previous exposure to fibrous minerals, such as asbestos. Asbestos exposure increases HER1-activity and expression in pre-clinical models. Additionally, HER1 over-expression is observed in the majority of MM cases. Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO), an anti-CD33 immunoconjugate, was combined with high dose cytarabine (HiDAC; cytarabine 3g/m(2) over 3h daily for 5 days) for adults with relapsed or refractory AML. HiDAC plus GO 9mg/m(2) on day 7 and 4.5mg/m(2) on day 14 was not tolerated, but HiDAC followed by GO 9mg/m(2) on day 7 was safe: 12/37 (32%) patients with relapsed AML achieved complete remission. Median overall survival was 8.9 months. No grade 4 hepatic veno-occlusive disease was observed. This regimen merits further study, both in this setting and as a remission consolidation therapy.
