Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Benzoyl Peroxide Resembling Impetigo.

A 17-year-old boy presented with recurring severe dermatitis of the face of 5-months duration that resembled impetigo. He had been treated with several courses of antibiotics without improvement. Biopsy showed changes consistent with allergic contact dermatitis and patch testing later revealed sensitization to benzoyl peroxide, which the patient had been using for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Ritodrine-induced pustular eruptions distinctly resembling impetigo herpetiformis.

A 27-year-old nulligravida woman without a history of dermatosis was hospitalized for threatened preterm labor at 29 weeks' gestation; there … goj's spongiform pustules. Based on the clinicopathological findings, the most likely diagnosis was impetigo herpetiformis, which causes cutaneous symptoms closely resembling pustular psoriasis in pregnant females without a history of psoriasis. To rule out ritodrine-induced pustular eruptions, the ritodrine infusion was stopped and treatment with an MgSO( …

Impetigo herpetiformis: menstrual exacerbations for 7 years postpartum.

Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is a rare pustular dermatosis that shares striking clinical and histological similarities to generalized pustular psoriasis. The case of a 26-year-old primigravida with IH progressing in the 30th week of her pregnancy is presented. The peculiarity of our presentation relies on the reappearance of the disease postpartum. Monthly exacerbations during menstruation lasted for 7 years. Some probable clues regarding the pathogenesis of IH are suggested.

Bullous Impetigo: A Mimicker of Immune-mediated Dermatoses.

The differential diagnosis of vesiculobullous lesions can be intimidating to the primary care provider. While some entities such as bullous impetigo may easily be diagnosed clinically if the patient's demographics as well as the lesion morphology and distribution present classically, atypical presentations may require additional laboratory studies for confirmation. We describe a case of bullous impetigo with characteristics that clinically mimicked two rare immunobullous dermatoses. Although extensive diagnostic testing was performed, we recommend an approach for primary care providers to init…

A comparative review of current topical antibiotics for impetigo.

INTRODUCTION: Impetigo is a superficial bacterial skin infection largely affecting the pediatric population. The objective of this review is to provide a comparison of mechanism of action, efficacy and safety of the available topical antibiotics for impetigo. AREAS COVERED: Randomized clinical trials that evaluated the use of topical antibiotics for treatment of impetigo were included. Two thousand eighty-nine studies were initially identified, and five randomized clinical trials met the criteria for further analysis. EXPERT OPINION: Topical antibiotics had greater resolution of impetigo in …

Topical Ozenoxacin Cream 1% for Impetigo: A Review.

Background: Impetigo, a bacterial infection that is highly contagious, involves the superficial skin. Topical treatment for impetigo includes amongst other bacitracin, gentamycin, mupirocin, retapamulin, and more recently, ozenoxacin 1% cream. For more severe conditions systemic antibiotics are prescribed and may be combined with a topical treatment. The current review explored the challenges in treating impetigo in pediatric and adult populations and examined the role of ozenoxacin 1% cream as a safe and effective treatment option. Methods: We performed PubMed and Google Scholar searches of t…

Impetigo Herpetiformis: Review of Pathogenesis, Complication, and Treatment.

Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is among rare dermatosis of pregnancy, which is currently considered as a form of generalized pustular psoriasis. It is diagnosed by characteristic lesions of erythematous patches and grouped pustules mostly in the third trimester of pregnancy and may have systemic associations. A variety of complications have been reported in the course of IH. Treatment of IH can be quite challenging, and a number of treatment options have been reported to be effective for the management.

Prevalence of scabies and impetigo worldwide: a systematic review.

Scabies is a skin disease that, through secondary bacterial skin infection (impetigo), can lead to serious complications such as septicaemia, renal disease, and rheumatic heart disease. Yet the worldwide prevalence of scabies is uncertain. We undertook a systematic review, searching several databases and the grey literature, for population-based studies that reported on the prevalence of scabies and impetigo in a community setting. All included studies were assessed for quality. 2409 articles were identified and 48 studies were included. Data were available for all regions except North America…

High burden of impetigo and scabies in a tropical country.

BACKGROUND: Impetigo and scabies are endemic diseases in many tropical countries; however the epidemiology of these diseases is poorly understood in many areas, particularly in the Pacific. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted three epidemiological studies in 2006 and 2007 to determine the burden of disease due to impetigo and scabies in children in Fiji using simple and easily reproducible methodology. Two studies were performed in primary school children (one study was a cross-sectional study and the other a prospective cohort study over ten months) and one study was performed in in…

The molecular logic of pemphigus and impetigo: the desmoglein story.

Desmosomes are intercellular adhesive junctions of epithelial cells that contain two major transmembrane components, desmogleins (Dsg) and desmocollins; these are both cadherin-type cell-cell adhesion molecules. Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disease caused by IgG autoantibodies that target Dsg1 and Dsg3 in pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris respectively. Bullous impetigo is a common and highly contagious superficial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a generalized form of bullous impetigo. The blisters in bullous impet…

Impetigo herpetiformis in a primigravida: successful treatment with etretinate.

Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is a rare dermatosis which usually occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy. It is characterized by acute erythematosquamous plaques covered with tiny superficial pustules in a herpetiform distribution with less likely mucus membranes involvement. It can be associated with constitutional symptom s such as fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Impetigo herpetiformis can cause serious complications to the mother and fetus which include: maternal hypocalcemia leading to delirium, convulsions, and tetany in the mother, and placental insufficiency leading t…

Impetigo herpetiformis unresponsive to therapy in a pregnant adolescent.

Impetigo herpetiformis is a rare pustular disorder affecting mainly pregnant women. We report a 16-yr-old adolescent primigravida, who presented with impetigo herpetiformis at 27 weeks gestation. She had a pustular erythroderma covering her entire body, except face, scalp, and palmoplantar regions, with severe pruritus and pain. After unsuccessful attempts of treatment with systemic corticosteroids, intravenous fluids, and antibiotics, treatment was switched to cyclosporine, but no therapeutic effect could be achieved. Because of the deteriorating condition of the patient, an early delivery de…

Impetigo herpetiformis associated with hypocalcemia of congenital rickets.

A 30-year-old woman with congenital rickets and autosomal recessive ichthyosis developed impetigo herpetiformis in the second trimester of her first pregnancy. This condition was temporally related to her discontinuation of vitamin D supplements and subsequent hypocalcemia. No associated systemic symptoms were observed, and a healthy baby was delivered prematurely at 34 weeks' gestation. This report supports the association between hypocalcemia and impetigo herpetiformis and raises theoretical questions regarding a relationship between vitamin D metabolism and various epidermal hyperproliferat…

Streptococcal impetigo and acute glomerulonephritis in children in Cairo.

Impetigo contagiosa in Cairo affected young children of both sexes, the face being the main site. Post-impetigo nephritis, confirmed by a low serum C3 level and by urinalysis, occurred in only 11% of cases. Streptococcus pyogenes strains were recovered from 84% of the skin lesions. Sixteen types were identified according to their T-protein, and most infections were associated with T3/B3264, T13/B3264, T5, T11, T12, T8/25/Imp 19 and T14/49; the majority of these types were also recovered from houseflies. The types isolated from cases of post-impetigo nephritis were T4 (M 60), T14/49 (M49), T8/2…
