Case study: Recurrent uterine incarceration during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Uterine incarceration is a rare complication of pregnancy. The most frequent complications are pain and urinary retention. CASE: We present the case of a patient who had presented a uterine incarceration during her first pregnancy, requiring a reduction under general anesthesia at 27+0 weeks of gestation complicated by premature delivery at 29+0 weeks of gestation. In the subsequent pregnancy, recurrent symptomatology encouraged earlier reduction at 19+5 weeks of gestation under locoregional anesthesia with term delivery. CONCLUSION: Reccurent symptomatology of uterine incarcerat…

Experiences of Loneliness: COVID-19 Versus Incarceration.

As the world comes to terms with the realities surrounding COVID-19, media sources have likened quarantine experiences to that of incarceration. Individuals who have experienced incarceration and individuals who have experienced the incarceration of loved ones (LO), have already experienced periods of time apart. We are exploring the experiences of individuals who have some experience with incarceration; whether they were personally incarcerated, or they experienced the incarceration of a LO. Utilizing snowball sampling, a mixed methods survey was circulated on social media. Survey items inclu…

Correlates of Incarceration History Among Military Veterans.

Veterans with histories of incarceration are at greater risk for poor physical and mental health outcomes, yet prior research in this population has focused on specific subsets of veterans or a narrow range of predictors. We utilized the Bronfenbrenner Socioecological Model as the framework to evaluate correlates of incarceration history in a large sample of Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans at four levels: demographic, historical, clinical, and contextual. Participants were 2,904 veterans (76.9% male; 49.5% White and 46.5% Black; mean age 38.08, SD = 10.33), 700 of whom reported a history of …

Maternal incarceration: Impact on parent-child relationships.

Female incarceration is rising steeply in Australia and other high-income countries. The majority of incarcerated women are mothers. Their children represent a particularly vulnerable group, often subject to adverse experiences due to their family's disadvantaged circumstances involving inadequate housing, food insecurity, poverty, poor health, a lack of personal safety due to violence and resulting trauma. This qualitative study explores parenting experiences of incarcerated mothers separated from their children. Interviews involved 65 mothers in three Australian prisons and 19 stakeholders p…

Paternal Incarceration and Adolescent Social Network Disadvantage.

Previous research has suggested that adolescent peers influence behavior and provide social support during a critical developmental period, but few studies have addressed the antecedents of adolescent social networks. Research on the collateral consequences of incarceration has explored the implications of parental incarceration for children's behavioral problems, academic achievement, health, and housing stability, but not their social networks. Using network data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, I find that adolescents with recently incarcerated fathers are in socia…

Femoral component incarceration at the distal slot.

Femoral components with distal coronal slots were introduced to decrease the stiffness mismatch of the femoral diaphysis and stem. We present 2 cases in which the stem of an S-ROM (DePuy, Warsaw, Ind) endoprosthesis was incarcerated in the diaphysis of the femur by bone growth through the distal slot. In both cases, this finding was discovered intraoperatively, following multiple unsuccessful attempts at stem extraction. We recommend performing a trans femoral cortical window at the distal slot, which provides adequate visualization of the stem and allows for resection of the anterior tine and

Incarceration of an umbilical hernia following colonoscopy.

We describe the unique case of a patient who developed incarceration of a loop of small bowel in an umbilical hernia following an uneventful diagnostic colonoscopy. It was treated with laparotomy, with release of the incarcerated bowel and closure of the defect with nylon sutures.

Programs supporting incarcerated and previously incarcerated indigenous peoples: a scoping review protocol.

The overincarceration of Indigenous peoples and its impacts on individual and community health is a growing concern across Canada and the United States. Federally run Healing Lodges in Canada are an example of support services for incarcerated and previously incarcerated Indigenous peoples to reintegrate into community and support their healing journey. However, there is a need to synthesise research which investigates these programmes. We report a protocol for a scoping review that is guided by the following research question: What is known about culturally informed programmes and services av…

The Dynamics of Intra-Family Relationships During Incarceration and the Implications for Children of Incarcerated Parents.

The current study examines effects of changes in intra-family relationships after parental incarceration on internalizing behaviors of the children of incarcerated parents. Using data from a sample of 249 incarcerated parents with minor children in South Korea, the present study found that perceived degradation of family relationships among inmate parents, their non-incarcerated spouses, and children was a significant risk factor of internalizing behaviors of children of incarcerated parents. The current study also found that inmate parents who had more frequent family contact were more likely…

Closing the (incarceration) gap: assessing the socio-economic and clinical indicators of indigenous males by lifetime incarceration status.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 to 1 in 6 Indigenous Australian males are currently imprisoned or have previously been imprisoned. Recent work has also pointed to a widening socio-economic gap within the Indigenous population. Given the myriad social, wellbeing and environmental risk factors associated with justice-involvement, it is conceivable that incarceration may contribute to the increasing disparities found within the Indigenous population. This study aimed to explore the presence and extent of an 'incarceration gap' within the Indigenous population and to uncover which social factors …
