Intracardiac thrombi can be localized and quantified by Indium-111-labelling of thrombocytes with a high sensitivity and specificity. The scintigraphic procedure has a complementary evidence to echocardiography. Scintigraphy shows activity and age of thrombosis, whereas echocardiography seems to be superior in determination of mass and localization. In older thrombi scintigraphy fails because of organisation and endothelialization of the thrombus surface. For the reason of determination of the age of an intraventricular thrombus this method might have an increasing acceptance.

We report a case of clinically unsuspected nocardia brain abscess detected by 111In-labeled autologous leukocytes. Clinical and computed tomographic findings supported the diagnosis of primary or metastatic tumor and the patient was treated with dexamethasone for 30 days prior to the leukocyte scan. Labeled leukocytes may provide a sensitive discriminator for brain abscess despite previous therapy with steroids.

We have studied the kinetics of autologous 111In-labelled platelets in patients with reduced platelet life span (less than 4.5 d), most of whom were thrombocytopenic, and of homologous 111In-labelled platelets in patients with severe thrombocytopenia. Intrasplenic platelet transit time (t) was calculated by compartmental and deconvolution analysis. BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effectiveness of workplace changes to prevent indium lung disease, using 2002-2010 surveillance data collected by an indium-tin oxide production facility.
METHODS: We assessed pulmonary function using lower limits of normal. Blood indium concentration and personal air sampling data were used to estimate exposure.
RESULTS: Abnormalities were uncommon at hire. After hire, prevalence of spirometric restriction was 31% (n = 14/45), about fourfold higher than expected. Excessive decline in FEV1 was elevated at 29% (n = 12/41). Half (n = 21/42) had blood indium ≥5 µg/l

Indium tin oxide (ITO) catalysts with different In/Sn ratios have been prepared by the co-precipitation method. The catalysts were evaluated for methane combustion at different temperatures (673-873 K) with a space velocity of 30 000 h(-1). The results showed that methane could be completely oxidized at 873 K with ITO catalysts. Bilateral diffuse lung uptake of In-111 pentetreotide (OCT) was observed during a whole-body scan performed in a 68-year-old woman with Cushing's syndrome and suspected ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion. Indium-III leukocytes are useful in localizing infection and abscess with excellent sensitivity and specificity. In this case report, heterologous Indium-III leukocytes provided the same diagnostic information as autologous leukocytes without adverse effects to the patient. A potential application of donor Indium-III leukocytes in the nonleukopenic patient is discussed.

Indium-111 tropolonate has recently been introduced as a new cell-labeling agent. It has the interesting property of labeling cells in plasma with high efficiency, and may therefore promote an improvement in viability of labeled cells. A novel class of quinolinol-based dimeric indium complexes (1-6) was synthesized and characterized using 1H and 13C(1H) NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Two cases of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, including one death, occurred in workers at a facility producing indium-tin oxide (ITO), a compound used in recent years to make flat panel displays. Both workers were exposed to airborne ITO dust and had indium in lung tissue specimens. One worker was tested for autoantibodies to granulocytemacrophage-colonystimulating factor (GM-CSF) and found to have an elevated level. These cases suggest that inhalational exposure to ITO causes pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, which may occur via an autoimmune mechanism.
