BACKGROUND: Widespread insecticide resistance increasingly threatens malaria elimination, prompting a reassessment of vector control strategies. As Tanzania transitions from standard pyrethroid-only insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to new-generation nets, evaluating the impact of this shift on malaria transmission and resistance is critical.
METHODS: Using the agent-based malaria model, EMOD, we assessed the impact of three ITN types, standard pyrethroid-only nets, pyrethroid-PBO nets (Olyset® Plus/PermaNet® 3.0), and the dual-active Interceptor® G2 nets (IG2) on malaria transmission and on mo

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of pyrethroid-only long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has contributed substantially to malaria control; however, increasing pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors threatens their continued effectiveness. To address this challenge, LLINs incorporating additional active ingredients have been developed. MiraNet® Combi is a novel LLIN incorporating alpha-cypermethrin, the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (PPF), and the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO).
METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of MiraNet® Combi against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in

BACKGROUND: Escalating pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors highlights the urgency of implementing new control tools incorporating non-pyrethroid molecules. Here, using DNA-based metabolic resistance markers, we assessed the efficacy of the dual active ingredients net Royal Guard against pyrethroids-resistant malaria vectors in Cameroon, establishing its long-term impact on mosquitoes' life traits after exposure.
RESULTS: Cone assays revealed low efficacy of Royal Guard against field Anopheles populations. However, analysis of the survival curves revealed that unexposed mosquitoes lived l

Mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) has been a key factor in reducing malaria cases and deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. A shortcoming has been the over-reliance on pyrethroid insecticides, with more than 2·13 billion pyrethroid ITNs (PY ITNs) distributed in the past two decades, leading to widespread pyrethroid resistance. Progressive changes are occurring, with increased deployment of more effective pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr (PY-CFP) or pyrethroid-piperonyl butoxide (PY-PBO) ITNs in areas of pyrethroid resistance. In 2023, PY-PBO ITNs accounted for 58% of all ITNs shipped to sub-

BACKGROUND: Where resources are available, non-pyrethroid IRS can be deployed to complement standard pyrethroid LLINs with the aim of achieving improved vector control and managing insecticide resistance. The impact of the combination may however depend on the type of IRS insecticide deployed. Studies comparing combinations of pyrethroid LLINs with different types of non-pyrethroid IRS products will be necessary for decision making.
METHODS: The efficacy of combining a standard pyrethroid LLIN (DuraNet®) with IRS insecticides from three chemical classes (bendiocarb, chlorfenapyr and pirimipho

Background: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have significantly reduced the malaria burden in recent decades, and this malaria prevalence reduction has been achieved through the upgrading of pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets. However, this reduction has stalled due to many factors, including rapidly developing pyrethroid resistance. Method: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO, and we used Cochrane methodology to assess bias and evidence quality. Three reviewers extracted data from individual studies, and a meta-analysis was performed using Excel and STATA version 17, expressi

In 2018, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were mass distributed across Madagascar. The bio-efficacy of DawaPlus® 2.0 and PermaNet® 2.0 ITNs was assessed upon arrival and at 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution. Chemical analyses of insecticide residue on ITNs were also conducted. On arrival, mosquito mortality rates observed when exposed to DawaPlus 2.0 (86.4%) and PermaNet 2.0 nets (83.6%) exceeded the WHO's threshold of 80.0%. At 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution, mosquito mortality rates were <56% for all districts. Moreover, the knockdown effect was below the WHO threshold of 95.

BACKGROUND: The Magude Project assessed the feasibility of eliminating malaria in Magude district, a low transmission setting in southern Mozambique, using a package of interventions, including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). As the efficacy of LLINs depends in part on their physical integrity, this metric was quantified for Olyset® Nets post mass-distribution, in addition to net use, care and handling practices and other risk factors associated with net physical integrity.
METHODS: Nets were collected during a cross-sectional net evaluation, nine months after the Magude project comme

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the backbone of anti-malarial vector control in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Over recent years the quality and performance of ITNs delivered to PNG decreased, which has likely contributed to the stagnation in the malaria control effort in the country. The present study reports results from the first 24 months of a durability study with the ITN product Yahe LN® in PNG.
METHODS: The durability study was conducted in four villages on the northern coast of PNG, in an area with high malaria parasite transmission, following WHO-recommended methodology adap

Long-lasting insecticidal nets, or LLINs, have significantly reduced malaria morbidity and mortality over the past two decades. The net provides a physical barrier that decreases human-mosquito contact and the impregnated insecticide kills susceptible mosquito vectors upon contact and may repel them. However, the future of LLINs is threatened as resistance to pyrethroids is now widespread, the chemical arsenal for LLINs is very limited, time from discovery of next-generation insecticides to market is long, and persistent transmission is frequently caused by vector populations avoiding contact

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a heavy burden across sub-Saharan Africa where transmission is maintained by some of the world's most efficient vectors. Indoor insecticide-based control measures have significantly reduced transmission, yet elimination remains a distant target. Knowing the relative abundance of the primary vector species can provide transmission models with much needed information to guide targeted control measures. Moreover, understanding how existing interventions are impacting on these relative abundances highlights where alternative control (e.g., larval source management) is n

BACKGROUND: Following three successful rounds of indoor residual spraying (IRS) implementation in the district of Sakassou (Côte d'Ivoire), IRS was withdrawn and replaced by insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). This study evaluated the entomological and epidemiological impacts of Interceptor (IG2) ITNs distributed in Sakassou to determine whether the protection offered by IG2 ITNs was adequate to suppress malaria transmission post-IRS withdrawal.
METHODS: This study is a quasi-experimental evaluation using historical data and additional data collections on entomological indicators and malaria inc

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in reducing malaria incidence and malaria-related mortality among vulnerable populations.
METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive search of Scopus, Medline, and CINAHL (up-to-April 2, 2026) identified experimental studies (randomised and cluster-randomised trials) evaluating the effect of ITNs impact for malaria control, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024609183). Pooled-effect-sizes [rate-ratios(RRs) and odds-ratios (ORs)] were calculated, and meta-regression was conducted t

BACKGROUND: Restricting the placement of active ingredients (AIs) to specific panels on insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) has the potential to reduce the amount of AI required to treat a net. If the restricted placement of the AIs can exploit mosquito behaviour, particularly where they interact with the bed net interface, and not impact the net's effectiveness, then the reduction in AI could result in cost reductions.
METHODS: Nine individual experimental hut trials were conducted to compare the efficacy of three different partially-treated net relative to fully treated nets; roof-only treated

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been targeted for elimination as a public health concern by 2030 with a goal to keep the prevalence of LF infections under the 1% threshold. While mass drug administration (MDA) is a primary strategy recommended by WHO, the use of insecticide treated nets (ITN) plays a crucial role as an alternative strategy when MDA cannot be used. In this paper, we use imitation dynamics to incorporate human behavior and voluntary use of ITN into the compartmental epidemiological model of LF transmission. We find the equilibrium states of the dynamics and the ITN usage as it dep

BACKGROUND: Most cases of malaria in Brazil are concentrated in the Amazon region. One of the vector control alternatives recommended by the WHO is the long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). This tool is used in the nine federal states of the Brazilian Legal Amazon, where LLINs are essential for reducing vector density and disease transmission as they prevent contact between the mosquito and the individual. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residuality and use of LLIN insecticides in different health regions in a city located in the Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: In Senegal, malaria morbidity has sharply decreased over these past years. However, malaria epidemiology remains heterogeneous with persistent transmission in the southeastern part of the country and many cases among older children and adolescents. Little is known about factors associated with clinical malaria among this group. A better understanding of malaria transmission among this newly emerging vulnerable group will guide future interventions targeting this population group. This study aimed to identify factors associated with clinical malaria among adolescents in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are the main malaria vector control measures deployed in Kenya. Widespread pyrethroid resistance among the primary vectors in Western Kenya has necessitated the re-introduction of IRS using an organophosphate insecticide, pirimiphos-methyl (Actellic® 300CS), as a pyrethroid resistance management strategy. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the combined use of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs has yielded varied results. We aimed to evaluate the effect of non-pyrethroid IRS and LLINs on malaria indicators in a high
