The cultural shaping of depression: somatic symptoms in China, psychological symptoms in North America?

The expectation that Chinese people present distress somatically is a central prediction of cultural psychopathology and has been the subject of considerable theoretical speculation. At the same time, empirical studies have been infrequent and have yielded mixed results. The authors examined symptom presentation in Chinese (n=175) and Euro-Canadian (n=107) outpatients, using spontaneous problem report, structured clinical interview, and symptom questionnaire methods. All 3 methods yielded cross-culturally equivalent somatic and psychological symptom subscales. Chinese outpatients reported more

Women's Psychological Aggression Toward an Intimate Male Partner: Between the Impulsive and the Instrumental.

The purpose of this article is to explore some underlying mechanisms of women's psychological aggression in intimate partner violence (IPV), as a phenomenon that requires better understanding and intervention, even in cases when it does not lead to physical violence. Psychological aggression is known to be the most prevalent pattern of IPV for both genders, and its impact on many survivors is known to be equal and sometimes worse than that of physical harm. Despite the fact that most aggressive conflicts between couples do not escalate into physical violence, research mainly addresses psycholo

Hypnosis is More Effective than Clinical Interviews.

To determine whether hypnosis is more effective than conventional interviewing to find traumatic life events in patients with fibromyalgia, we carried out a within-subject experimental design with complete intragroup counterbalancing. Thirty-two women under care in a public primary care center gave 2 identical interviews, with an interval of 3 months, in which the occurrence of traumatic life events was explored, once in a state of wakefulness and once in a state of hypnosis. The state of consciousness was evaluated using 3 measures: bispectral index, skin conductance level, and pain intensity

Phenomenology associated with depressed moods in adolescents.

The authors studied phenomenology associated with depressed moods in 30 adolescents within a semi-structured interview format using defined symptom items. The results suggest that while there is some symptomatic similarity between adolescent depression and depression in adults, there are many differences that warrant more cautious comparison and further study.

Psychological experience and coping strategies of pregnant women with acute pancreatitis: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: To clarify the psychological experience and coping strategies in patients with acute pancreatitis in pregnancy (APIP) and propose interventional measures to improve pregnancy outcomes in these women. With an increasing trend of pregnant women in advanced ages and multiparous women, the incidence of APIP has significantly increased. Pregnancy accompanied by concurrent pancreatitis may subject these women to notable psychological stress, which is a factor that has been infrequently reported in previous studies. METHODS: APIP patients were interviewed from December 2020 to June 2021.

The objective of psychological evaluation in the process of qualifying candidates for bariatric surgery.

Psychosocial and behavioral variables play an important role in both the development and treatment of obesity. Therefore, in the process of qualifying the patient for bariatric surgery, it is necessary to professionally evaluate his/her psychological state. Such evaluation is very helpful in the identification of factors potentially disturbing the effectiveness of the treatment. Clinical interviews with a group of 80 patients were conducted by a psychologist in the pre- and post-surgical period. The qualitative analysis of the interviews led to the identification of the major elements which sh

Self-report versus interview assessment of purging in a community sample of women.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Agreement between self-report and interview assessment of purging behaviours was examined in a community sample of women with a high level of eating disorder symptoms (n = 324) who completed both the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). RESULTS: Of 46 individuals who reported any use of self-induced vomiting or laxative misuse on the questionnaire, 19 (41.7%) denied these behaviours when subsequently questioned in a face-to-face interview. These individuals had lower levels of eating disorder psychopathology, functiona

Clinical instruments to evaluate and guide treatment in schizophrenia.

Treatment research in schizophrenia is focused on the development of pharmacological agents that are effective for improving community functioning and decreasing disability. As a result of this recent focus, there has been substantial activity for developing instruments that can measure functioning as well as the psychopathological domains that are related to functioning. Issues in selecting measures of real-world functioning include ensuring that the instrument measures the full range of possible outcomes and differentiating symptoms from functioning. For many treatment studies it is unrealis

Psychological predictors of mortality in heart transplanted patients: a prospective, 6-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Some reports suggest a link between poor psychological adjustment to heart transplantation and an increased risk of subsequent adverse clinical outcome. Despite its prognostic and therapeutic implications, this issue is still lacking adequate empirical studies. We prospectively tested the predictive value of a complete set of psychiatric and psychological variables, collected with both self-rating and observer-based instruments at midterm after heart transplantation, on the subsequent 6-year survival status. METHODS: Ninety-five heart transplanted patients underwent the structured

Effects of adversarial questioning on response accuracy in analog forensic interviews.

Few behavior-analytic studies have examined the effects of interviewer behavior on interviewee responding in the context of forensic interviews, and these were all conducted with child participants. Insufficient research in this area limits our understanding of underlying behavioral processes and precludes the development of effective methods for studying these processes. In the current study, we examined the effects of interviewer behavior on response accuracy for seven adult interviewees. Participants viewed brief videos depicting a crime and answered, "yes" or "no" questions presented in a

[Adaptation of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) for the assessment of comorbid mental disorders in oncology patients: the CIDI-O].

This article describes the development of an oncology-specific adaptation of the Composite Diagnostic International Interview (CIDI) for the assessment of comorbid mental disorders in cancer patients. The specific problems related to the assessment of mental disorders in cancer patients are described, in particular the overlap of somatic and mental symptoms as well as the insufficiently elaborated assessment of adjustment disorders and cancer related posttraumatic stress using structured and standardized procedures. The modification strategies that fostered the development of the CIDI-Oncology

Positive and negative aspects of mental health after unspecified living kidney donation: A cohort study.

Disturbances in the experiences of embodiment related to attachment, mentalization and self-objectification in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance is central to both the understanding and treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN); however, the underlying psychological processes involved are still not well understood. One way towards a better understanding of these mechanisms may be to explore the sense of embodiment in these patients in an attempt at integrating the role of the body in our understanding of the development of self in AN. It is hypothesized that difficulties in affective experiences of embodiment is related to insecure attachment, deficits in mentalization and self-objectification. METHODS: Six

Distractions in Forensic Evaluations.

Although test manuals and professional guidelines universally specify that forensic assessments should take place in quiet, private, and distraction-free environments, such absences of distractions are rare in jail and prison settings. In this article, four aspects of this problem are examined. First, compelling examples of noise and distractions are described to give a sense of the nature of the problem. Second, the portions of guidelines from the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and the American Psychological Association regarding distractions are presented, along with associated e

Increasing the number of contacts generated during contact tracing interviews.

To stem the spread of infectious diseases (e.g., Ebola), epidemiologists conduct contact tracing interviews (CTIs) with infected individuals regarding their contacts who may also be infected. These contact tracing interviews, however, may be vulnerable to deadly errors of omission. A promising technique to maximise recall is the Cognitive Interview (CI), which is grounded in psychological theory. In the present study, participants imagined they were infected with meningococcal meningitis and reported their contacts over the previous three days during either a control interview or a CI.
