Ontogeny of alkaline phosphatase activity in infant intestines and breast milk.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating disease of intestinal inflammation that primarily affects premature infants. A potential risk factor for necrotizing enterocolitis is exposure of the premature neonatal intestine to environmental bacteria and their proinflammatory products such as lipopolysaccharide. The metalloenzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has been shown to reduce lipopolysaccharide-mediated inflammation. Additionally, premature rat pups have reduced alkaline phosphatase activity and expression as compared to full term pups. To explore the possibility that the h

Pneumatosis of the intestines, colon and liver in a young cat.

To describe a case of naturally occurring pneumatosis intestinalis, pneumatosis coli and emphysematous hepatitis in a cat. A 9-month-old, indoors-only, female spayed, domestic medium hair cat presented for vomiting, open-mouth breathing and acute collapse. The initial physical examination identified moderate to severe hypothermia [35°C (95°F)], obtunded mentation, weak femoral pulses, tachycardia (heart rate 240 beats per min), pale pink mucous membranes and significant splenomegaly on abdominal palpation. Immediate diagnostics performed [packed cell volume and total solids (PCV, TS), venous b

Nosema ceranae Infection Promotes Proliferation of Yeasts in Honey Bee Intestines.

BACKGROUND: Nosema ceranae infection not only damages honey bee (Apis melifera) intestines, but we believe it may also affect intestinal yeast development and its seasonal pattern. In order to check our hypothesis, infection intensity versus intestinal yeast colony forming units (CFU) both in field and cage experiments were studied. METHODS/FINDINGS: Field tests were carried out from March to October in 2014 and 2015. N. ceranae infection intensity decreased more than 100 times from 7.6 x 108 in March to 5.8 x 106 in October 2014. A similar tendency was observed in 2015. Therefore, in the Eur…

[Echography in the study of an intramural hematoma of the intestines].

PURPOSE: To report our experience concerning the integrated diagnostic imaging of intestinal intramural hematoma, with special reference to the different patterns and to the accuracy of US examinations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the last 4 years we examined 7 patients with intraparietal hematoma, due to anticoagulant therapy, using real-time US. All the subjects presented with abdominal pain, sometimes associated with distention, tenderness, bleeding, hematocrit reduction, palpable mass or obstruction. The hematomas involved the duodenum in 2 cases, the jejunum in 4, and the descending colon i

Staphylococci in poultry intestines: a comparison between farmed and household chickens.

Both pathogenic as well as nonpathogenic species of staphylococci have been reported in poultry, but these studies have not compared staphylococcal flora of both farmed and household broiler chickens. Staphylococci from farmed (n = 51) and household chicken intestines (n = 43) were isolated and tested for resistance to antimicrobials, presence of resistance genes, and inhibitory activity against other bacteria; correlation of resistance phenotype and genotype was also evaluated. At least 12 staphylococcal species were identified; Staphylococcus carnosus subspecies carnosus was the predominant …

Histopathological changes in small and large intestines during hymenolepidosis in rats.

The tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta is a chronic parasite living in the small intestine of rats, mice and humans. The aim of this study was to determine histopathological changes in the rat intestine during experimental hymenolepidosis. Our results showed that in rats infected with H. diminuta slight changes occurred in the length of the villus and crypts in different parts of the digestive tract. The changes were most distinct in the duodenum and jejunum on the 16 days post H. diminuta infection.

Pathological analysis of lesions within intestines resected due to ulcerative colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Lesniowski-Crohn's disease together constitute a type of intestinal pathology known as Inflammator … men) of UC with the special interest being focused at macro- as well as microscopic features of the intestines resected. We reviewed macroscopic characteristics of intestines (i.e. the length of resected fragments, localization, shape and diameter of the ulcers, polyps, number of resected lymph nodes), as well as microscopic descriptions concerning, among ot …

Relationship between the spike activities of the small and large intestines.

Experiments were performed using chronically implanted electrodes on the dog smooth muscle wall of the stomach and of the small and large intestines. Electrical activity of the muscle wall was recorded before and after feeding. When reaching the terminal ileum the active part of the migrating myoelectrical complex (MMC) continuously induced bursts of spike potentials superimposed on the slow waves. This electrical activity spread to the ascending colon. We also showed the existence of a spike activity on the terminal ileum independent of the MMC (appearing during the phase 1) and propagating t…

In vivo imaging reveals unique neutrophil transendothelial migration patterns in inflamed intestines.

Neutrophil (PMN) infiltration of the intestinal mucosa is a hallmark of gastrointestinal inflammation, with significant implications for host defense, injury and repair. However, phenotypic and mechanistic aspects of PMN recruitment in inflamed intestines have not been explored in vivo. Using novel epithelial/PMN fluorescence reporter mice, advanced intravital imaging and 3D reconstruction analysis, we mapped the microvasculature architecture across the intestinal layers and determined that in response to Salmonella/endotoxin-induced inflammation, PMN transendothelial migration (TEM) was restr…
