Intraoperative cystoscopy for urinary tract complications during robotic gynecological hysterectomy surgery.

The effectiveness of cystoscopy in reducing urinary tract complications during robotic gynecologic surgery is poorly documented. Since the introduction of robotic surgery at our institution, cystoscopy has been consistently employed as a standard practice, and its usefulness was investigated. This retrospective study evaluated the utility of routine cystoscopy in patients who underwent robotic surgery between February 2017 and April 2024. The outcome was the detection rate of bladder and ureteral complications. Indigo carmine was injected intravenously while suturing the post-hysterectomy vagi

Intraoperative complications during robotic thymectomy and their management: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Complete thymectomy is the established treatment for thymic epithelial tumors (TET) and often included in the management of myasthenia gravis. Minimally invasive approaches, including robotic-assisted techniques, have gained acceptance for their benefits in reducing postoperative pain and recovery time. Thymectomy poses risks due to the proximity of the thymus to critical mediastinal structures, and intraoperative complications confronted on the robotic platform can be precarious. Current literature on intraoperative complications is fragmented and limited, and lacks

Adrenalectomy for Pheochromocytoma: Complications and Predictive Factors of Intraoperative Hemodynamic Instability.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the treatment of choice for pheochromocytoma. However, this surgery carries a risk of hemodynamic instability (HDI). The aim of this study was to report complications associated with this procedure, to identify risk factors for HDI during surgery, and its impact on postoperative outcomes. METHODS: The charts of all patients who underwent adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma in two academic centers between 2006 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome was HDI defined by a systolic blood pressure >160 mmHg or a mean blood pressure <60 mmHg intraoperativel

High intraoperative inspiratory oxygen fraction and risk of major respiratory complications.

BACKGROUND: High inspiratory oxygen fraction ( FIO2 ) may improve tissue oxygenation but also impair pulmonary function. We aimed to assess whether the use of high intraoperative FIO2 increases the risk of major respiratory complications. METHODS: We studied patients undergoing non-cardiothoracic surgery involving mechanical ventilation in this hospital-based registry study. The cases were divided into five groups based on the median FIO2 between intubation and extubation. The primary outcome was a composite of major respiratory complications (re-intubation, respiratory failure, pulmonary oed

Strategies to minimize complications during intraoperative aneurysmal hemorrhage: a personal experience.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of intraoperative rupture (IOR) of an aneurysm is one of the most precarious moments in microsurgery, and the management of IOR profoundly affects operative outcomes. METHODS: The authors describe their personal experiences during the past decade with managing intraoperative aneurysm rupture for microsurgical treatment of complex cerebral aneurysm procedures. RESULTS: Steps to avoid and manage IOR depend on the stage of the operation or phase of dissection and on aneurysm location and configuration. The point at which IOR occurs dictates the management options avai

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome: a cohort study on intraoperative complications in cataract surgery.

Our aim was to determine the rate of intraoperative complications induced by pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PSX) in cataract surgery. We report our experience regarding 1,052 consecutive patients who underwent phacoemulsification. Exact logistic regression was used to examine the role of PSX in intraoperative complications. Odds ratio for intraoperative complications (vitreous loss, capsular break, zonular break) was estimated to be 5.1 for PSX present as compared to when it is absent. PSX was associated with a statistically significant increase in intraoperative complications during cataract sur
