Results of the treatment of 165 lid carcinomas by iridium wire implant.

A group of 160 adult patients with epithelial tumors of the lid and/or canthi treated by iridium 192 wire implant are presented. There were 165 epithelial tumors, most of them were basocellular type (85%). In all cases, a nonradioactive procedure was used with disposable angiocatheters before introducing active wires. Respectively, 111/114 (97.4%) of "new" lesions and 48/51 (94%) of previously treated tumors were definitively cured by iridium wire implant. Among the 6 local recurrences, 4 were salvaged by a second iridium implant, and the two others by extensive surgery. Local side effects wer

Measurement of iridium isotopic concentration using proton-induced Coulomb excitation technique.

This study utilizes the Coulomb excitation technique with a Van de Graaff accelerator to precisely measure the γ-ray emissions of natural and enriched iridium samples, specifically targeting isotopes 191Ir and 193Ir. By analyzing and comparing the gamma emissions from both samples, the concentration of 191Ir in the enriched sample was accurately determined to be 88%. This non-destructive method demonstrates the reliability and precision of Coulomb excitation for isotopic analysis, offering a robust approach to isotopic quantification that is especially relevant for nuclear physics research, is

In situ generated iridium nanoparticle-catalyzed highly efficient hydrogenation of nitroarenes.

The catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines is a pivotal transformation, often hindered by the formation of hazardous intermediates and the need for substantial catalyst loadings under mild conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that the commercially available pre-catalyst [Ir(COD)Cl]2 facilitates this transformation with remarkable efficiency (substrate-to-catalyst molar ratio S/C = 1000-100 000) under mild conditions (50 °C, 60 atm H2), through the in situ generation of the active Ir nanoparticle (NP) catalyst. This system achieves quantitative conversion and exceptional isolat

Iridium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Carbocation Precursors via Wagner-Meerwein Rearrangement.

Carbocation rearrangement is a powerful tool for converting a simple precursor into a complex molecular scaffold. However, controlling the stereoselectivity of a reaction that involves carbocation rearrangement is challenging and remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate a novel iridium-catalyzed Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement and asymmetric hydrogenation of carbocation precursors (1-(aryl)-1-(1-methylcyclobutyl/cyclopentyl) ethan-1-ol) for the synthesis of various optically active gem-dimethyl cycloalkanes. Hence, enantiopure gem-dimethyl-containing compounds are important motifs found in

Enantioselective Iridium-Catalyzed Intramolecular Hydroarylation of (Hetero)Arene-Tethered Prochiral Diketones.

The enantioselective iridium(I)-catalyzed hydroarylation of C-C unsaturated bonds ranks among the most atom-efficient technologies in organic synthesis. We now report an enantioselective desymmetrizing cyclization that entails carbonyls instead of C═C partners, providing direct access to architecturally complex (hetero)polycyclic frameworks bearing a tertiary alcohol and an adjacent all-carbon quaternary stereocenter at their ring junctions. The in situ dehydration of the initially formed alcohol was occasionally observed to yield products bearing an allylic quaternary stereocenter, which offe

Injectable alginate-iridium complex hydrogel for sonodynamic therapy of breast cancer.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide, and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive antitumor therapeutic modality. In this work, an injectable alginate (ALG) hydrogel loaded with an iridium complex (Ir958) was rationally fabricated for SDT-mediated suppression of breast cancer growth. The optimized composite hydrogel exhibited favorable injectability and excellent biocompatibility, while the loaded Ir958 effectively produced cytotoxic singlet oxygen upon ultrasound irradiation. In vitro biological evaluations de

Iridium-Catalyzed Enantioselective C(sp3)-H Borylation of Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes.

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) have attracted considerable interest in organic synthesis due to their versatile reactivity. However, the asymmetric synthesis of these strained systems remains a formidable challenge. We herein report an iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3)-H borylation of BCBs, providing access to a range of optically active borylated BCBs with high enantioselectivities. We also demonstrated synthetic applications by downstream transformations, particularly in the stereoselective preparation of optically active multisubstituted cyclobutenes.

Substituent-Dependent Azide Addition to Isocyanides Generates Strongly Luminescent Iridium Complexes.

Ligand-centered functionalization reactions offer diverse strategies to prepare luminescent organometallic compounds. These compounds can have unique structures that are not accessible via traditional coordination chemistry and can possess enhanced or unusual photophysical properties. Here we show that bis-cyclometalated iridium bis-isocyanide complexes (1) react with azide (N3-) to form novel luminescent structures. The fate of the reaction with azide is determined primarily by the substituent on the aryl isocyanide. Those with electron-withdrawing substituents (CF3 or NO2) react with 1 equiv

Red-emitting heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes: photophysical and cell labeling study.

Two red-emitting heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes (Ir-p and Ir-q) were synthesized and their photophysical and biological properties were analyzed. After their structures have been confirmed by several techniques, such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and MALDI TOF analyses, their luminescence behavior was investigated in ethanol and PBS (physiological medium, pH ~ 7.4) solutions. Emission spectra of both complexes are dominated by 3MLCT states at room temperature in ethanolic solution, but at 77 K the Ir-q exhibits the 3LC as the dominant emission state. The Ir-q complex shows one of the

Functionalized NU-1000 with an Iridium Organometallic Fragment: SO2 Capture Enhancement.

A new material, MOF-type [Ir]@NU-1000, was accessed from the incorporation of the iridium organometallic fragment [Ir{κ3(P,Si,Si)PhP(o-C6H4CH2SiiPr2)2}] into NU-1000. The new material incorporates less than 1 wt % of Ir(III) (molar ratio Ir to NU-1000, 1:11), but the heat of adsorption for SO2 is significantly enhanced with respect to that of NU-1000. Being a highly promising adsorbent for SO2 capture, [Ir]@NU-1000 combines exceptional SO2 uptake at room temperature and outstanding cyclability. Additionally, it is stable and can be regenerated after SO2 desorption at low temperature.

Case report: Iridium 192-health effects during 20 years after irradiation.

This Case Report has presented health effects of high level of irradiation with gamma rays from Ir 192m on the patient M. L. during 21 years after the accident. The main purpose of this investigation was to analyze long time consequences of partial high-level irradiation on human health. Locally, short-term irradiation, with high deadly dose, caused acute radiation syndrome with reversible disorder function of the individual, most exposed, organs. Frequency of chromosomal aberrations (dicentric), characteristic for direct irradiation, was increased. However, dicentric analyzes did not give exp

Efficient red-emitting cyclometalated Iridium(III) complexes containing lepidine-based ligands.

Heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes featuring lepidine-based ligands and acetyl acetone auxiliary ligand are synthesized. Multiple lowest energy absorption bands are observed for these complexes indicating substantial mixing of the singlet and triplet levels. All the complexes emit orange or red color in dichloromethane solutions with lifetimes in the range 1.6-3.7 micros. The emission in the complexes probably originates from the (3)MLCT state. The complexes are applied as emitting guests in LED devices of the structure ITO/HTL(BPAPF or NPB)/6% Ir in CBP/BCP/Alq(3)/LiF/Al. They

Eyelid and scleral necrosis following bare iridium-192 seed for retinoblastoma.

A 2 1/2-year-old girl with a history of bilateral retinoblastoma underwent primary enucleation of the right eye and was referred for further management of persistent tumor in the fellow eye. Previous treatment of the left eye included external beam radiotherapy, systemic chemotherapy, laser photocoagulation, cryotherapy, and direct scleral application of a bare iridium-192 radioactive seed. Examination revealed focal full-thickness necrosis of the left upper and lower eyelid and a large inferonasal viable retinoblastoma tumor with overlying retinal detachment. Systemic chemotherapy and direct

Interstitial iridium-192 for bladder cancer (a multicentric survey: 205 patients).

Interstitial irradiation is a technique currently used in the treatment of bladder cancer. We report the data on 205 patients (177 men and 28 women) treated in eight French centers. The patients had received the following treatment: a short course of pre-operative pelvic irradiation, followed by surgery consisting of partial cystectomy or tumor resection, and implantation of plastic tubes filled with inactive lead wires, which were replaced by iridium 192 wires. The tumor characteristics were: transitional cell carcinoma, 88.8%; mean size of the tumor, 29 mm; pathological stages: pTis, 1; pT1,

Iridium(I)-corrorin complexes as green-light photosensitizers for singlet oxygen.

Two mononuclear Ir(I)-corrorin complexes, FPh-Ir and Py-Ir, featuring peripheral κ2-N,N' dipyrrin coordination, were structurally characterized and shown to efficiently photosensitize singlet oxygen under green light (ΦΔ = 0.65-0.69 in CH3CN). TD-DFT supports a near-resonant S1 → T3 intersystem-crossing pathway with appreciable spin-orbit coupling.

Harnessing Immunogenic PANoptosis With Iridium(III) Biradical Photosensitizers for Melanoma Photoimmunotherapy.

The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is fundamentally constrained by an intrinsic photophysical trade-off between its two ROS-generating mechanisms. Type I pathways require a strongly reducing excited state to drive electron transfer, whereas type II pathways demand a long-lived triplet state to enable efficient energy transfer to molecular oxygen. Since both originate from the same triplet manifold, optimizing one property inevitably compromises the other, limiting the oxidative potency and broad applicability of conventional photosensitizers within the heterogeneous tumor microenvironm

Microenvironment Matters: Destabilization of Iridium Anode Catalyst by CO Reduction Products.

Iridium is one of the most frequently employed anode electrocatalysts in CO2 and CO electrolysis, thanks to its reasonable overpotential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and high stability under operating conditions. The latter has been challenged recently by a handful of studies where destabilization of iridium was observed, which was explained solely by thermodynamics (iridium is unstable at strong alkaline pH and OER potentials). In this study, we demonstrate that liquid CO and CO2 electrolysis products (such as ethanol and acetate) crossing over to the anode side under long-term ope

Iridium(III) carbene complexes as potent girdin inhibitors against metastatic cancers.

Many cancer-driving protein targets remain undruggable due to a lack of binding molecular scaffolds. In this regard, octahedral metal complexes with unique and versatile three-dimensional structures have rarely been explored as inhibitors of undruggable protein targets. Here, we describe antitumor iridium(III) pyridinium-N-heterocyclic carbene complex 1a, which profoundly reduces the viability of lung and breast cancer cells as well as cancer patient-derived organoids at low micromolar concentrations. Compound 1a effectively inhibits the growth of non-small-cell lung cancer and triple-negative

Electron beam-induced white emission from iridium complexes-doped polymer dots.

Radiation detection plays an important role in diverse applications, including medical imaging, security, and display technologies. Scintillators, materials that emit light upon exposure to radiation, have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional sensitivity. Previous research explored polymer dots (P-dots) doped with iridium complexes as nano-sized scintillators for radiation detection, but these were constrained to emitting specific colors like red, green, and blue, limiting their utility. Recently, there has been a breakthrough in the development of white light emitters stimu

Stereocontrolled Hydrogenation of Conjugated Enones to Alcohols via Dual Iridium-Catalysis.

The concept of dual catalysis is an emerging area holding high potential in terms of preparative efficiency, yet faces severe challenges in compatibility of reaction conditions and interference of catalysts. The transition-metal catalyzed stereoselective hydrogenation of olefins and ketones typically proceeds under different reaction conditions and/or uses a different reductant. As a result, these two types of hydrogenations can normally not be performed in the same pot. Herein, the stereocontrolled hydrogenation of enones to saturated alcohols is described, enabled by orthogonal dual iridium
