This paper has presented the author's experience with the evaluation and follow-up of 62 patients with primary cysts of the iris. On the basis of these observations, a classification of iris cyst is proposed. Accordingly, primary iris cysts are divided into epithelial and stromal categories, each having different clinical characteristics. Uveal melanoma prognostication studies have mainly included posterior uveal melanomas located in the ciliary body and choroid, often excluding iris melanoma. In this study, we report prognostic status and survival outcomes in a series of 35 patients with biopsy-proven iris melanoma. CASE REPORT: The case is presented of a patient with diagnosis of iris nevus in the left eye in youth with a poor follow-up, who referred a decreased visual acuity in that eye. A hyphaema and a 3×4×3mm nodule with irregular pigmentation was observed. Excision of the tumour and histological analysis confirmed the suspicion of iris melanoma in stage Ia.
DISCUSSION: Despite the low grade malignancy of iris melanoma and the low frequency of transformation of iris nevus into melanoma, a follow-up is required for its early diagnosis and treatment.
