Iron Supplements for Infants at Risk for Iron Deficiency.

Professional societies have published recommendations for iron dosing of preterm neonates, but differences exist between guidelines. To help develop standardized guidelines, we performed a 10-year analysis of iron dosing in groups at risk for iron deficiency: IDM (infants of diabetic mothers), SGA (small for gestational age), and VLBW premature neonates (very low birth weight, <1500 g). We analyzed iron dosing after red cell transfusions and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA). Of IDM, 11.8% received iron in the hospital; 9.8% of SGA and 27.1% of VLBW neonates received iron. Twenty percent

Iron sensors and signals in response to iron deficiency.

The transcription of genes involved in iron acquisition in plants is induced under iron deficiency, but our understanding of iron sensors and signals remains limited. Iron Deficiency-responsive Element-binding Factor 1 (IDEF1) and Hemerythrin motif-containing Really Interesting New Gene- and Zinc-finger proteins (HRZs)/BRUTUS (BTS) have recently emerged as candidate iron sensors because of their functions as potent regulators of iron deficiency responses and their iron-binding properties. IDEF1 is a central transcriptional regulator of graminaceous genes involved in iron uptake and utilization

Iron metabolism and iron deficiency anemia in women.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are highly prevalent among women across their reproductive age. An iron-deficient state has been associated with and causes a number of adverse health consequences, affecting all aspects of the physical and emotional well-being of women. Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, and the postpartum period are the major causes of ID and IDA. However, despite the high prevalence and the impact on quality of life, ID and IDA among women in their reproductive age is still underdiagnosed and undertreated. In this chapter we summarized the iron metabol

[Iron deficiency anemia refractory to iron preparations].

Most patients with iron deficiency anemia are treated effectively with oral iron preparations. However, a small number of these patients are refractory to such treatments, even when the pathologic condition underlying the anemia is concurrently treated. The pathological basis for this refractoriness can be explained by several factors, including malabsorption of iron, e.g. atrophic gastritis, deficiency of other hematopoietic vitamins or minerals, e.g. vitamin B12 or zinc, other undiagnosed anemic disorders, e.g. renal anemia or hematopoietic diseases, as well as certain hereditary disorders o

[Recent advances in the management of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy].

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are common obstetric complications associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes. According to the latest evidence-based medical evidence, this article reviews the management strategies for ID and IDA during pregnancy. Intravenous iron therapy provides substantial advantages for patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to oral iron, as well as for those with severe IDA requiring rapid correction. The application of new-generation intravenous iron agents has improved treatment efficiency; however, their safety in the first trimest

Overview of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in women and girls of reproductive age.

Over 50% of pregnant women are anemic and the majority of these are iron deficient. Micronutrient deficiency, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding in nonpregnant individuals, and loss of blood associated with pregnancy and obstetric delivery contribute to iron deficiency (ID). Poor outcomes with low maternal iron can affect not only the pregnancy but can also have major bearings on the offspring. Correction of ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant and prepregnant populations with single-dose intravenous iron supplementation may offer improved outcomes. A harmonization process that

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in the Northern and Southern Provinces of Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Anemia remains a public health problem in Rwanda, affecting 38% of young children and 17% of reproductive-aged women (Demographic and Health Survey [DHS] 2010). The importance of iron deficiency (ID) as a cause of anemia in Rwanda is not known. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among young children and women in 2 provinces of Rwanda. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized survey, selecting 408 rural households each in the Northern and Southern Provinces of Rwanda in 2010. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin <110 g/L in children

[Frequency of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia in infancy and childhood (author's transl)].

266 children with iron deficiency were treated over a period of 2 years. The incidence rate and age distribution did not deviate much compared with former results. A different incidence of iron deficiency was found when 120 healthy children from 2 socially and economically different groups were examined. In both groups together the incidence rate of iron deficiency was 19%. But while in the socially higher standing group only 5% were afflicted, the other group showed 33%. This difference questions the value of generally iron medication and favours the opinion that iron deficiency indicates tha

Iron Deficiency, Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin Deficiencies in Crohn's Disease: Substitute or Not?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by inflammatory reactions, complications, extraintestinal manifestations and a loss of intestinal functions, for example, failures of absorption and secretion. According to intestinal dysfunction, a wide array of pathogenetic pathways is existing leading to iron deficiency and numerous vitamins as well as trace element deficiencies. Complications, symptoms and signs of those deficiencies are common in IBD with varying degrees of clinical significance. This review focuses on selected micronutrients including iron, zinc, magnesium and some vitami

Copper, iron, and selenium dietary deficiencies negatively impact skeletal integrity: A review.

Nutrients have been known to have a significant role in maintaining the health of the skeleton, both bone and cartilage. The nutrients that have received the majority of the attention are Vitamin D and calcium. However, limited attention has been directed toward three trace elements that may have mechanistic impact upon the skeletal tissues and could compromise skeletal health resulting from inadequate intakes of copper, iron, and selenium. The role of copper and selenium has been known, but the role of iron has only received recent attention. Copper deficiency is thought to impact bone health

Control of iron and other micronutrient deficiencies in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Most micronutrient deficiencies affect relatively few people in the Caribbean; however, many Caribbean residents are affected by anemia that appears due primarily to a lack of dietary iron. While generally substantial, the prevalences of such anemia have differed a good deal from place to place and study to study, observed rates ranging from 27% to 75% in pregnant women, 19% to 55% in lactating women, and 15% to 80% in young children. Severe anemia, defined by a blood hemoglobin concentration below 8 g/dl, has been found in approximately 6% of the pregnant women and 11% of the preschool childr

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in Chronic Disease-Common, Important, and Treatable.

Iron has many important functions related to energy metabolism. However, hemoglobin synthesis is always a priority. Iron deficiency can be caused by increased loss, insufficient intake, or decreased absorption from the intestine and reduced release from depots in systemic inflammation. Anemia appears when stores are depleted or when utilization of iron from the stores is impaired. Treatment with oral iron is the first choice when the intestine is healthy, and the patient is free of inflammation. Intravenous iron is indicated when oral iron is ineffective or not tolerated and if more rapid corr

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Comprehensive Overview of Established and Emerging Concepts.

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency globally, affecting approximately one in four individuals, with a particularly high burden among children, women of reproductive age, and populations in low- and middle-income countries. It contributes significantly to the global burden of disease, with consequences ranging from impaired cognitive and motor development in children to increased risks during pregnancy, including low birth weight, preterm delivery, and maternal mortality, as well as reduced physical performance and quality of life in adults. ID often precedes iro

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: Potential Risk Factors in Bone Loss.

Iron is one of the essential mineral elements for the human body and this nutrient deficiency is a worldwide public health problem. Iron is essential in oxygen transport, participates in many enzyme systems in the body, and is an important trace element in maintaining basic cellular life activities. Iron also plays an important role in collagen synthesis and vitamin D metabolism. Therefore, decrease in intracellular iron can lead to disturbance in the activity and function of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, resulting in imbalance in bone homeostasis and ultimately bone loss. Indeed, iron deficien
