Experimental antegrade enema. Effects on water, electrolyte and acid-base balances with different solutions.

PURPOSE: To study the effects on the water, electrolyte, and acid-base balances in rabbits submitted to antegrade enema with different solutions through appendicostomy. METHODS: Forty male New Zealand rabbits were submitted to appendicostomy, and distributed in 4 groups, according to the antegrade enema solution: PEG group, polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution (n=10); ISS group, isotonic saline solution (n=10); GS group, glycerin solution (n=10); SPS group, sodium phosphate solution (n=10). After being weighed, arterial blood gas analysis, red blood count, creatinine and electrolytes were

[Upper digestive hemorrhages of ulcerous nature (management and experience)].

A number of 135 cases were examined, presenting with superior digestive hemorrhage of ulcerative origin. The analysis of the cases was made by two comparable groups. In the first one of the groups the volemic re-equillibration was based on the administration of blood and surgery was carried out, in principle, on a "cold" condition. In the second group volemic re-equillibration was achieved exclusively with isotonic non-colloidal volemic solutions that were administered before, during and after surgery (0.9% NaCl solution and 5 g% glucose solution in equal amounts). Surgery was performed as an

The growth of microorganisms in propofol and mixtures of propofol and lidocaine.

UNLABELLED: Propofol emulsion supports bacterial growth. Extrinsic contamination of propofol has been implicated as an etiological event in postsurgical infections. When added to propofol, local anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine) alleviate the pain associated with injecting it. Because local anesthetics have antimicrobial activity, we determined whether lidocaine would inhibit microbial growth by comparing the growth of four microorganisms in propofol and in mixtures of propofol and lidocaine. Known quanta of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans were

Small volume resuscitation with hypertonic sodium chloride solution in cattle undergoing surgical correction of abomasal volvulus.

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of rapid intravenous (IV) infusion of a 7.2% hypertonic saline solution with that of continuous application of an isotonic solution in stabilizing the circulation of cows with abomasal volvulus. Cattle treated with hypertonic saline had a significantly greater reduction in volume deficit within the first 10 min of therapy than cows treated with isotonic saline (from 5.9 ± 4.8 to 2.1 ± 4.4 L/100 kg vs. 7.0 ± 4.5 to 4.9 ± 3.8 L/100 kg, respectively). The central venous pressure (CVP) of the cows given the hypertonic saline rose wi

Crystalloid or colloid: does it matter?

The modern version of the crystalloid-colloid debate has continued for more than 25 years, and a current appraisal of the debate is presented here. Although the effect of crystalloids and colloids on intravascular volume is important, their effect on interstitial fluid volume after hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock is central to the debate. If reduced, crystalloids are appropriate as part of the resuscitation regime; if increased, colloid therapy is more logical. A brief review of the distribution of crystalloids and currently used colloids (albumin, polygeline, dextran 70, and hydroxyethyl sta

Plasma expanders. An update.

This review of the literature has revealed that isotonic fluids, such as 0.9 percent sodium chloride and Ringer's lactate, are effective plasma volume expanders. Despite the continued use of a variety of colloid solutions in resuscitation, there is no good evidence to document a benefit of these solutions over the crystalloid solutions. The additional cost of colloid compared with crystalloid is another argument against colloid use. The most interesting solution currently being assessed is hypertonic saline solution. Its major benefit is that a small volume of fluid can achieve effective resus

Nutrient sensitivity of gastric emptying of digesta in the preruminant calf.

1. Studies of gastric function were made in preruminant calves fitted with a single abomasal cannula, re-entrant cannulas in the duodenum close to the pylorus and recording electrodes on the pyloric antrum and proximal duodenum. 2. Simultaneous measurements were made of gastric emptying of a saline (9 g sodium chloride/l) meal, myoelectric activity of antral muscle and plasma concentration of somatostatin in jugular blood whilst infusing the duodenum with different solutions. The duodenal infusates were isotonic sodium bicarbonate (300 mosmol/kg), hyperosmolar solutions of NaCl (1000 mosmol/kg

Intravenous pretreatment of hypertonic saline can prevent systemic hypotension induced by spinal anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic saline improves organ perfusion and patient survival during hemorrhagic shock because it expands plasma volume and increases tissue oxygenation. Its beneficial results have been reported in patients suffering from hypotension during spinal anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to compare the influence between prehydration with 3% hypertonic saline and with isotonic lactated Ringer's solution on the hemodynamic changes and serum electrolyte concentrations in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. METHODS: Sixty ASA class I patients scheduled for herniorrhapy under sp

Hypovolemic shock resuscitation with hyperosmotic 7.5% NaCl: effects on respiratory system mechanics.

The infusion of the hypertonic 7.5% NaCl solution stimulates the afferent vagal innervation of the lungs. In order to verify if this reflex elicits any respiratory mechanical alterations, normovolemic (n = 18) and hypovolemic (n = 18) (20 ml of shed blood/kg) guinea pigs were studied. The animals were assigned to groups of nine receiving either isotonic 0.9% NaCl or hypertonic 7.5% NaCl solutions (4 ml/kg body weight). Passive respiratory system elastance (Ers) and the maximal value of the resistance (Rrsmax) were measured. The latter was further partitioned into its minimal value (Rrsu) using

Benefits and risks of using gelatin solution as a plasma expander for perioperative and critically ill patients: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the benefits and risks of gelatin solutions compared to other intravenous fluids for patients in perioperative and critical care settings. Of the 66 studies identified from MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, 30 randomised controlled trials involving 2709 patients met the inclusion criteria and were subject to meta-analysis. The risk of mortality (odds ratio 1.03, 95% confidence interval 0.80 to 1.32) and amount of blood loss (weighted-mean-difference 7.56 ml, 95% confidence interval 18.75 to 33.87) were not significantly different between patients who were treat

Use of crystalloids and colloids in Europe per year from 2010 to 2019: Protocol for an international descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous (IV) fluids are widely used in everyday clinical practice. In the last two decades, several trials and clinical practice guidelines have been published on the use of different types and dosages of IV fluid. This may have led to a change in clinical practice. Thus, we aim to describe the use of IV crystalloids and colloids in Europe over a 10-year period. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will collect national or regional data on the use of IV crystalloids and colloids in European hospitals through companies and/or federal medical agencies that provide pharmaceutical data conc

Analysis of the effectiveness of Sodium Hypochlorite decontamination of cadaveric human tissues at retrieval.

Bacterial contamination of tissues retrieved from cadaveric donors is a common feature worldwide, and every tissue bank, albeit using different methods, conducts decontamination to guarantee safe tissues suitable for clinical use. The effectiveness of the methods used to eradicate pathogens differs. In order to reduce the tissue bioburden at retrieval, we have introduced a new method involving rinsing tissues in a sodium hypochlorite solution. To test its effectiveness we analyzed two comparable groups of tissues: Group A: 1881 tissues, all rinsed with isotonic saline solution after retrieval,

Formalin Inactivation of Virus for Safe Downstream Processing of Routine Stool Parasite Examination during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the parasitology laboratories dealing with fecal samples for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasitic infections are confronting the unsaved virus-containing samples. To allow for safe downstream processing of the fecal samples, a protocol for preparing a fecal smear is urgently needed. Formalin was tested with or without isotonic forms for virus inactivation using porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as a representative, as it belongs to the Coronaviridae family. The results revealed complete inactivation activity of 10% formalin and 10% isotonic formalin on
