[The surgical treatment of periradicular cysts of the jaws].

The author has succeeded in improving functional results of surgical treatment of the teeth that caused pararadical cysts. This was due to access to the pathologic focus, preservation of the 'causative' tooth root, filling of the residual osseous cavity with formalin-treated allogenic placental transplant. A total of 79 patients were operated on using this method. Late results were followed up for 2 years, no recurrences occurred and functional status of the operated on 'causative' teeth permitted their use as abutment teeth for bridge dentures.

[Odontogenic cysts of the jaws. A clinicostatistical study].

In this paper a retrospective clinicostatistical study of 508 cases of odontogenic cysts of the jaws treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Athens during the last ten years 1977-1987 is undertaken, in order to evaluate their frequency and other aspects of clinical and therapeutic interest. These 508 odontogenic cysts represent 78.7% of the total number of cysts of the jaws treated in the same period in our department which means that the frequency of odontogenic cysts is still high. In regards to the incidence of each variety of odontogenic cysts, radi

[Classification of benign tumors and cysts of the jaws].

On the basis of 324 cases of maxillary tumours, the authors review the classification of these neoplasms. The most frequent tumours are benign epithelial odontogenic tumours, which represent 55% of all tumours. The most common of these tumours is the ameloblastoma, followed by the odontomas. Most of the tumours of non-dental origin are benign (72% of this group). Amongst the malignant tumours, osteosarcomas are much more common than chondrosarcomas. The authors also discuss the various types of cyst and their respective relative frequency.

Surgical management of jaw cysts: clinical insights and case report.

Jaw cysts are a common, yet diverse group of lesions often detected incidentally during routine dental examinations. While many cysts remain asymptomatic, larger, or aggressive, cysts can lead to significant complications, including tooth displacement, jaw fractures and nerve damage. This article reviews the pathophysiology, classification and management of jaw cysts, focusing on odontogenic cysts, which account for most cases presenting to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Various surgical techniques exist, including enucleation, marsupialisation, decompression, and en bloc resection, each with…

Emulating Clinical Diagnostic Reasoning for Jaw Cysts with Machine Learning.

The detection and classification of cystic lesions of the jaw is of high clinical relevance and represents a topic of interest in medical artificial intelligence research. The human clinical diagnostic reasoning process uses contextual information, including the spatial relation of the detected lesion to other anatomical structures, to establish a preliminary classification. Here, we aimed to emulate clinical diagnostic reasoning step by step by using a combined object detection and image segmentation approach on panoramic radiographs (OPGs). We used a multicenter training dataset of 855 OPGs

Statistical observations on jaw cysts in Enugu, Nigeria, 1987-1996.

Cases of jaw cysts treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu during the 10 year period between 1987 and 1996 were studied clinically. A diagnosis of jaw cyst was established in 20 patients during the above period. According to pathological classification by the WHO method, these patients included 10 (50%) with dentigerous cyst, 3 (15%) with radicular cyst, 3 (15%) with odontogenic keratocyst, 3 (15%) with fissural cyst (nasopalatine duct cyst, nasoalveolar cyst, globulomaxillary cyst), 1 (5%) with dermoid cyst. Patients wi…

Clinicopathological study of jaw cysts in southeast region of Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze clinic and radiologic features and the prevalence of jaw cysts in southeast region of Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out in 149 cysts of the jaw diagnosed among 407 individuals who were taken biopsy in our department from October 2008 to December 2012. All cysts were treated by enucleation, marsupialization, or combination, and all cases were histologically examined. RESULTS: One-hundred-and-forty-eight cases were classified odontogenic, one was non-odontogenic. There were 89 cysts (59.7%) in men, 60 (40…

Expression of epidermal growth factor receptors by odontogenic jaw cysts.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) by odontogenic epithelium was studied in odontogenic cysts (n = 35), ameloblastoma (n = 6), and periapical granulomas containing proliferating epithelial rests of Malassez (n = 7) using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to EGFr (clone E30, F4 and C11) known to react with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Odontogenic epithelium in all specimens demonstrated immunoreactivity with all three antibodies. Clone E30 consistently gave the most intense, membrane located staining pattern of the three antibodies tested. Generally, stainin

An attempt to generate panoramic radiographs including jaw cysts using StyleGAN3.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to generate radiographs including dentigerous cysts by applying the latest generative adversarial network (GAN; StyleGAN3) to panoramic radiography. METHODS: A total of 459 cystic lesions were selected, and 409 images were randomly assigned as training data and 50 images as test data. StyleGAN3 training was performed for 500 000 images. Fifty generated images were objectively evaluated by comparing them with 50 real images according to four metrics: Fréchet inception distance (FID), kernel inception distance (KID), precision and recall, and inception
