In Kenya and most of Eastern Africa, sickle haemoglobin (HbS) is the pre-dominant beta-globin chain abnormality; homozygous sickle cell disease, (SCA), is the predominant form of sickle cell disease. Although the prevalence of sickle cell trait (SCT) in Kenya was known, the magnitude of SCA was yet to be established. We performed a national survey in all hospitals from November 1987 to May 1990 and found 3605 cases with SCA. Age was recorded for 2821 patients. Seventy-seven per cent of these patients were below the age of fifteen. The oldest patient was a 50-year-old female. The paediatric to …

BACKGROUND: Co-morbidity with tuberculosis and HIV is a common cause of mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. In the second Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey, we collected data on knowledge and experience of HIV and tuberculosis, as well as on access to and coverage of relevant treatment services and antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Kenya.
METHODS: A national, population-based household survey was conducted from October 2012 to February 2013. Information was collected through household questionnaires, and blood samples were taken for HIV, CD4 cell counts, and HIV viral load testing at a central laborator…

Uvulectomy is a common practice in eastern Africa for treatment of a variety of throat conditions. Traditional healers perform the procedure. I present a case report to illustrate a complication of uvulectomy. This is a report of a child who presented with severe anemia secondary to uvulectomy performed for treatment of chronic cough. This case report is intended to illustrate a procedure not commonly performed by western otolaryngologists and to describe the management of a severe complication. Western physicians are increasingly being tasked in medical situations in which they encounter trad

Melioidosis is thought to be endemic, although underdiagnosed, in Africa. We identified 5 autochthonous cases of Burkholderia pseudomallei infection in a case series in Kenya. Incidence of B. pseudomallei bacteremia in Kenya's Kilifi County is low, at 1.5 cases per million person-years, but this result might be an underestimate.

Hepatitis C virus is a great public-health concern worldwide. Phylogenetic analysis of the HCV genome has identified six different genotypes that have generally been divided into several subtypes. There is very little information on HCV seroprevalence and genotypes in Kenya. To determine the genotypes of HCV circulating in Kenya, blood donor samples were serologically tested and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Positive samples were cloned and sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis conducted to determine the HCV genotypes. One hundred Murex-seropositive samples were re-tested using …

Unwanted pregnancies put women in Kenya at risk of morbidity and mortality associated with childbearing; induced abortion is an option some women seek as a response to that situation. Qualitative research was carried out to document the case histories of 30 Kenyan women who underwent induced abortion. In-depth interviews were conducted among an urban group of low-income women to identify sources of information about induced abortion and the decision-making process, and to describe the abortion experience among this group. Being unmarried and unemployed contributed to the decision to abort. Two…

A series of eight regional eye surveys were conducted in Kenya as part of the Kenya Rural Blindness Prevention Project. Each survey consisted of clinical examinations of about 1800 individuals selected by a random cluster sampling technique in geographically distinct and culturally homogeneous rural areas; 13,803 examinations were completed in all. Together these surveys provide the basis for national estimates of the prevalence and aetiology of visual loss and ocular pathology. The results showed that 0.7% of rural Kenyans are blind in the better eye by WHO standards, and another 2.5% suffer …

An epidemic of meningococcal disease occurred in Nairobi, Kenya, during 1989, outside the "meningitis belt" of sub-Saharan Africa. About 3800 cases occurred between April and November (250/100,000 population). The case-fatality rate was 9.4% among hospitalized patients. Areas that included Nairobi's largest slums had particularly high attack rates. The epidemic displayed an unusual age distribution, with high attack rates among those 20-29 years old. A vaccination campaign was conducted. By early January, the weekly case count had fallen to 25 from a high of 272 (in September). A case-control …

INTRODUCTION: non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are projected to become the leading cause of death in Africa by 2030. Gender and socio-econom … hypertension were aware of their diagnosis.
CONCLUSION: prevalence of NCD risk factors is high in Kenya and varies across socio-demographic attributes. Socio-demographic considerations should form part of multi-sectoral, integrated approach to reduce the NCD burden in Kenya.
