Serious morbidity from an elective Hodgkin's disease staging laparotomy was low in this group of 65 patients. Patients with mediastinal involvement alone and patients having histologic findings of nodular sclerosis with unilateral neck disease with or without mediastinal involvement appear to have a low risk for disease discoverable by lararotomy. In some cases of conduction deafness or mixed deafness, direct inspection of the area believed to be involved is the only means by which diagnosis can be made with certainty. This can be done by a method of tympanotomy that is used for stapes mobilization. The necessary exposure is done with local anesthesia, is not painful, is well tolerated by the patient and requires only two days in hospital. Reparative procedures may be carried out as indicated.

The most common surgically retained foreign body is the laparotomy sponge. The clinical presentation of a retained sponge can vary from an incidental finding on plain radiograph to an intense inflammatory response with obstruction or perforation. Dehiscence of laparotomic wounds is always unpleasant, starting with the resentment of the patient and the lack of confidence leading as far as complete negation of a favourable result of the operation. Due to lack of more suitable materials we elaborated ten years ago our own technique which we use nowadays for treatment but in particular for prevention. We feel that it could be a certain asset because it is simple and financially feasible.

HYPOTHESIS: Although experience with laparoscopic colectomy continues to accumulate, criteria for patient selection for the procedure have yet to be developed. We propose that review of indications for conversion to laparotomy during laparoscopic colectomy should define some of the current technical limitations of the procedure. Laparoscopic tubal sterilization was performed on 179 women using general anesthesia, and tubal sterilization via mini-laparotomy was performed in 52 cases using local anesthesia. The major objective of diagnostic laparotomy in Hodgkin's disease is to define the extent of involvement not detectable by nonoperative means. Fifty patients in this institution had operative staging procedures; six for recurrent disease three to 11 years after initial therapy. Twenty-four patients had nodular sclerosis, 23 mixed cellularity, and three had other types. The clinical stages were advanced in 13 patients and decreased in seven patients.
