INTRODUCTION: Hyperfunctional dysfunction is one of the most common functional dysphonia, cha-racterized by voice insufficiency with excessive tightening of the muscles inside and outside the larynx during phonation. To make the treatment process more effective, new ways of rehabilitation are constantly being sought and developed. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of laryngotaping - an innovative method of taping around the larynx and neck muscles.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 10 patients with diagnosed hyperfunctional dysphonia participated in the study. Using the kinesiotaping p

OBJECTIVE: To prepare a decellularized whole laryngeal scaffold by utilizing a perfusion-decellularized technique, reseed cells on it, and construct decellularized laryngeal muscles.
METHODS: Perfusion decellularized larynxes were obtained by common carotid arterious perfusion with detergents. Then they were performed by macroscopic view, histological examination, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cartilage viability. Decellularized laryngeal scaffold were then reseeded with inducted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Composites were transferred into greater omentums of rabbits after one day…

BACKGROUND: Adequate vocal cord paralysis and full recovery of laryngeal muscle function are important when muscle relaxants are used periop … , the time course of neuromuscular blockade after vecuronium and rocuronium differs in antagonistic laryngeal muscles. The protective laryngeal function of glottis closure recovers later than vocal cord abduction after both vecuronium and rocuronium.

The purpose of the study was to compare the response of the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle (CD) to neuromuscular blocking drugs with those of the thyroarytenoideus (TA), diaphragm (DI) and ulnaris lateralis (UL) muscles. Evoked electromyographic response to indirect supramaximal stimulation at 1 Hz was monitored in ten adult goats under thiopentone-halothane anaesthesia. The onset time and duration of neuromuscular blockade after intravenous administration of 500 micrograms.kg-1 of succinylcholine or 4 micrograms.kg-1 of vecuronium were determined. Times to 100% paralysis in CD, TA, DI and

Clinical and pathological findings are reported in three cases of Shy-Drager syndrome with laryngeal stridor severe enough to require tracheostomy. Indirect laryngoscopy in all three cases revealed a failure to abduct the vocal cords properly with a resulting narrowing of the glottic airway. Histological studies showed a marked atrophy of the posterior crico-arytenoid muscles and little atrophy of the other laryngeal muscles. The posterior crico-arytenoid muscles have the sole responsibility of abducting the vocal cords, so it is concluded that the patient's stridor was caused by the selective…

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: It has been generally accepted that the branches of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve to the interarytenoid muscle are exclusively sensory. However, some experimental studies have suggested that these branches may contain motor axons, and therefore that the interarytenoid muscle is supplied by both the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves. The aim of this work was to determine whether motor axons to the interarytenoid muscles are present in both laryngeal nerves.
STUDY DESIGN: Basic research.
METHODS: Twelve human internal branches of the superior

Electrical stimulation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, synchronized with inspiration, was achieved in dogs utilizing a radio frequency stimulus triggered by a chest wall expansion transducer. This system brings about abduction of the paralyzed vocal cord for the entire duration of inspiration, which allows a normal flow of air through the larynx. The implantable part of that system was tested successfully in chronic experiments (up to 11 months) in dogs with experimental paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We feel that the system may be suitable for pacing the paralyzed human l

OBJECTIVES: The pathophysiology of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection injury is rare in that it is characteristically followed by a high degree of spontaneous reinnervation, with reinnervation of the laryngeal adductor complex (AC) preceding that of the abducting posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. Here, we aim to elucidate the differentially expressed myogenic factors following RLN injury that may be at least partially responsible for the spontaneous reinnervation.
METHODS: F344 male rats underwent RLN injury (n = 12) or sham surgery (n = 12). One week after RLN injury, larynges

PURPOSE: The major component of the upper esophageal sphincter is the cricopharyngeal muscle (CPM). We assessed the contribution of the laryngeal nerves to motor innervation of the CPM.
METHODS: We performed an intraoperative electromyographic study of 27 patients. The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), vagus nerve, external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN), and pharyngeal plexus (PP) were stimulated. Responses were evaluated by visual observation of CPM contractions and electromyographic examination via insertion of needle electrodes into the CPM.
RESULTS: In total, 46 CPMs (24

INTRODUCTION: Primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) is a functional voice disorder that reduces communicative abilities and adversely impacts occupational productivity and quality of life. Patients with pMTD report increased vocal effort, fatigue, discomfort, and odynophonia. Although laryngeal and paralaryngeal muscle tension and hyperfunction are the most commonly proposed mechanisms underlying these symptoms, recent studies suggest pMTD may have more to do with the somatosensory system. However, relationships between voice symptoms and somatosensory mechanisms are poorly understood, creat

OBJECTIVE: To observe the morphologic features of cricopharyngeal muscle (CPM) under suspension laryngeal endoscope.
METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on a series of 100 consecutive patients who undergone endoscopic microlaryngeal surgery with intubation general anesthesia. The suspension laryngoscope was introduced down to postcricoid area approaching esophageal inlet. By lifting the larynx with the laryngoscope, the mucosa-covered cricopharyngeal muscle was easily identified as the mound of tissue just at the posterior pharyngeal wall. Conventional surgical therapies for bilateral laryngeal paralysis sacrifice voice to enlarge the airway. Electrical pacing of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle to restore glottal opening and allow ventilation offers a new treatment approach. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether long-term stimulation of the PCA muscle altered perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic parameters of voice. Two patients underwent implantation of a Medtronic Itrel II laryngeal pacemaker. Voice evaluation was performed before surgery and at monthly postoperative sessions with the pacemaker

An 18-month-old male entire Bloodhound dog was presented with a six-week history of progressive inspiratory dyspnoea, stridor, dysphonia and exercise intolerance. CT scan performed elsewhere had revealed the presence of an unencapsulated nodular mass (3x1x5 cm) dorsal to the larynx and first tracheal rings. Laryngoscopy demonstrated the presence of bilateral laryngeal paralysis and distorted laryngeal architecture suggestive of extraluminal compression. Histopathology results of incisional biopsies from the mass were suggestive of a benign non-neoplastic muscular lesion. Surgery was performed

The treatment of laryngeal dystonia with botulinum toxin has provided various degrees of relief to the majority of patients with adductor dysphonia; however, a significant number of patients have limited or no improvement with this type of therapy. It remains unclear why some patients respond to the routine administration of toxin to the thyroarytenoid muscles whereas others do not. Injections into the lateral cricoarytenoid muscles have provided an improved voice in some patients who were unresponsive to injections into the thyroarytenoid muscles. Fine-wire electromyography can demonstrate th

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition is a biological marker indicative of appropriate and functional reinnervation.
STUDY DESIGN: Age-matched adult rats were randomized for prospective study under three experimental conditions.
METHODS: In adult rats, three experimental conditions were surgically created, including transient recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) crush injury, RLN transection and repair, and cricoarytenoid joint fixation with intact RLN. Animals were survived for 30, 90, and 180 days. At each interval, vocal fold mobility was assessed by rigi
