Enforcement of drunken driving laws in cases involving injured intoxicated drivers.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of driving while impaired (DWI) charges among alcohol-intoxicated drivers injured in motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and any differences in the group of those charged compared with those not charged. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of linked data from medical and judicial sources. Our setting was an urban emergency department of a trauma center serving a population of 1 million. We studied consecutive drivers injured in MVCs over a period of 15 months who had measured serum ethanol (BAC) levels of 100 mg/dL or higher. BAC, Trauma Score (

No Justice and No Peace: The Ongoing Traumatic Stress of Families Bereaved by Law Enforcement.

While the American public is increasingly waking up to the pervasiveness of police violence, the family-level impacts of police killings are severely understudied. This study partnered with families bereaved by police to explore how interactions with law enforcement before and after the killing impacted their psychological wellbeing. Eleven in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with relatives of men of color killed by police. Interviews were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and organized into two domains with five themes. The first domain (The Victim's Trea

Reluctant risk-takers: how law enforcement practices at festivals can obstruct safer drug use.

BACKGROUND: Prohibition-based drug policies such as recent UK draft legislation on recreational drug possession assume expanding police powers will deter use and thereby reduce harm. In fact research suggests punitive policing harms PWUD (people who use drugs) in recreational contexts by incentivising behaviours with lower legal but higher health risk. Although some vectors of this harm have been well researched (notably dog-assisted searches at festival gates), others are less understood. This article aims to help elucidate them by examining how enforcement strategies impacted participants' a

Cardiorespiratory demands of firearms training instruction and 15m shuttle tests in British law enforcement.

OBJECTIVES: Law enforcement agencies require minimum fitness standards to safeguard their officers and training staff. Firearms instructors (FI) are expected to maintain the same standards as their operational counterparts. This study aimed to quantify the daily physiological demands placed on FI. METHODS: 19 FI (45 ± 5 years) completed occupational tasks whilst wearing heart rate (HR) monitors for a minimum 10 days. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) testing was conducted on FI during a treadmill test (TT) and a multistage shuttle test (ST). Linear regression models were used to model the r

Less-lethal law enforcement weapons: clinical management of associated injuries in the emergency department.

Less-lethal weapons and tactics are being increasingly used by law enforcement to minimize the reliance on more-lethal force. While these methods are designated as "less-lethal," they can cause morbidity and mortality when deployed. Knowledge of these weapons and tactics can help direct the workup and management of patients with injuries from these methods and can protect clinicians from secondary exposure and injuries. This issue reviews the most common less-lethal weapons and tactics used by law enforcement, describes their mechanism of action, and discusses associated common injury patterns

Is job-related stress the link between cardiovascular disease and the law enforcement profession?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether job-related stress is associated with alterations in pro- and anti-atherogenic inflammatory mediators among law enforcement officers. METHODS: Markers of vascular inflammation and the self-reported stress measures of perceived stress, vital exhaustion, job strain, effort-reward imbalance, and social support were compared between officers (N = 444) and non-officers (N = 166). RESULTS: Officers had higher levels of IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-alpha and lower levels of C-reactive protein and fibrinogen. No more than 4% of the variability in any of the inflamma

Work-Related Stress and Psychological Distress among Law Enforcement Officers: The Carolina Blue Project.

Law enforcement is a stressful occupation that places significant psychological demands on those serving in this role. However, little is known about the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among law enforcement officers (LEOs) in North Carolina (NC). This cross-sectional study examined the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among 283 LEOs in NC. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Operational Police Stress Questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist were used to assess burnout,

Cool under fire: Psychopathic personality traits and decision making in law-enforcement-oriented populations.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with other jobs, the law enforcement profession is a high-stakes occupation that has the potential to greatly impact public safety, and officers must face daily dangers not experienced in other professions. Previous research indicates that many law enforcement officers exhibit varying degrees of psychopathic traits, which suggests that it may be useful to examine police officer performance, specifically proxies of excessive use of force, through the lens of the triarchic psychopathy domains. HYPOTHESES: We predicted that high boldness and high meanness would be associated

Defining and assessing vulnerability within law enforcement and public health organisations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Historically, police departments focused solely on criminal justice issues. Recently, there has been a dynamic shift in focus, with Law Enforcement professional groups assuming more responsibility for tackling mental health and distress-related issues (that may arise because of mental health related problems and learning disabilities) alongside Public Health departments. While Law Enforcement has become a 'last line of support' and an increasing partner in mental health support, there is partnership working between law enforcement, psychology, and health professions in training and

Distress, coping, and drug law enforcement in a series of patients using medical cannabis.

Patients using medical cannabis in the United States inhabit a conflicting medicolegal space. This study presents data from a dispensary-based survey of patients using medical cannabis in the state of Washington regarding cannabis-specific health behaviors, levels of psychological distress, stress regarding marijuana criminality, past experiences with drug law enforcement, and coping behaviors. Thirty-seven subjects were enrolled in this study, and all but three completed survey materials. The median index of psychological distress, as measured by the Behavioral Symptom Inventory, was nearly 2

Milwaukee police department retirees: cardiovascular disease risk and morbidity among aging law enforcement officers.

This study explored the self-reported prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and accompanying risk factors among 165 male retirees 43 years and older (M = 56.2, SD = 7.1) from the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) compared to 671 individuals of similar age and income who responded to the 2005 Wisconsin Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). CVD and other risk factors were more prevalent in the MPD retirees than the general population (CVD 15.2% vs. 9.5%, p = .036; hypertension 51.5% vs. 36.2%, p = .001; hypercholesterolemia 62.4% vs. 44.4%, p = .001; overweight and obesity 85.

Firearm assaults against US law enforcement officers in the line-of-duty: Associations with firearm ownership and state firearm laws.

Law enforcement officers are disproportionately affected by occupational injury. Firearm violence is the second leading cause of occupational mortality for this group behind motor vehicle crashes. In the general population, greater firearm ownership and weaker firearm laws are associated with increased firearm violence incidence. It is plausible that a high prevalence of firearms could also be associated with a greater incidence of LEO assault with a firearm. Using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's, Uniform Crime Reporting, Police Employee Data for 2006-2016, we conducted a panel

Assault-on-Law-Enforcement: The Complications of Charges for Individuals on Mental Health Court Dockets.

BACKGROUND: Mental health courts divert individuals with serious mental illness away from imprisonment into community-based treatment and supervision. Early research indicates that such treatment contracts can reduce recidivism and provide various other benefits. Aspects of eligibility for this diversion option are still under-researched. AIMS: To explore the nature of alleged offences against people accepted into mental health courts (on mental health court dockets), and their demographic and mental health context and their perceived relevance to eligibility for such diversion. METHODS: We
