OBJECTIVES: Hematophagous terrestrial leeches are common in rainforest habitats and widely regarded as pests. Despite limited research, circumstantial evidence raises the possibility that, beyond being an annoyance, terrestrial leeches could potentially transmit diseases.
METHODS: We explored this possibility using multiple approaches. First, we reviewed published literature to synthesize knowledge related to disease transmission by leeches. Second, we collected terrestrial leeches (genus Haemadipsa) from human-occupied rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia and applied metagenomic methods for vi…

Neonatal circumcision is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. As with all surgeries, it carries risks, including rare, but devastating complications, such as glans, and/or penile shaft amputation. Complete glans amputation with successful replantation has been previously reported. Herein we report a case of complete amputation at the penile midshaft in a 28-day-old neonate with a unique approach to postoperative care including the use of leech therapy, topical heparin, and caudal analgesia following successful microvascular replantation.

The efficacy of leeches, as biological agents, in control of snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis (Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria alexandrina) and fascioliasis (Lymnaea natalensis) as well as their effect on the non-target snails Physa acuta, Melanioides tuberculata and Cleopatra bulimoides was evaluated. Two glossiphoniid snail leeches, Helobdella nilae and Alboglossiphonia conjugata were used. They destroyed egg masses and young snails more rapidly than adult ones. H. nilae showed a stronger destructive effect than A. conjugata. In a descending order, it preferred L. natalensis follo…

Foreign bodies are a common cause of unilateral epistaxis in children. Both animate: and inanimate foreign bodies are commonly found but, leech as a cause of epistaxis is rare. Cases of leech infestation have been reported in the past but infrequently. Here we report an unusual case of bilateral epistaxis in a four years old child who had infestation with multiple live leeches.

Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach (1792-1847) regularly and successfully utilised leeches in sophisticated plastic surgery in Berlin in the 1820s and 1830s, well before anaesthesia, antisepsis and antibiotics. Inexplicably, it took nearly another 150 years before the use of leeches in this context was revived.

A case of severe macroglossia, following intraoral surgery, causing respiratory distress is described. Because conventional therapy appeared inadequate, leeches were used and proved an efficient method of reducing this life-threatening swelling of the tongue.

The use of medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) for the salvage of tissues with venous congestion has been intermittent over the last two centuries. During the last decade, interest in leech therapy has undergone a resurgence. Hirudo's tricuspid bite injects a highly potent anticoagulant. The site usually bleeds for 1 to 2 hours and under special circumstances may bleed for up to 24 hours. This collective series presents four patients in whom immediate postoperative venous congestion threatened the survival of three tissue replants and one latissimus dorsi flap. Two of the replants were comp…

Leeches are rare cause of foreign body in airways. A 23-year-old male, experiencing epistaxis and difficulty in swallowing is presented. During nasopharyngoscopy, a moving leech was observed on the nasopharynx posterior wall in midline location, and removal of the leech was decided under general anaesthesia. The flexible nasopharyngoscopy was inserted, but removal was unsuccessful due to the leech's movements. Leeches are blood-sucking parasites, so neuromuscular blocking agent was given to prevent the movement. After administration, motion of the leech was lost and easily removed undamaged. I…

Leeches are an unusual cause of epistaxis and haemoptysis that should be considered in places with poor access to water. In this case report, we present a 7-year-old girl previously mismanaged as bacterial pharyngitis but later discovered to be a leech in the pharynx. She had ingested a leech from a spring that caused a foreign body sensation in the throat, frequent throat clearing, epistaxis, haemoptysis, and mild anaemia. The 3cm long leech was successfully removed by using Tilley forceps without any anaesthesia and with complete resolution of symptoms.

UNLABELLED: Hirudo medicinalis sucks blood directly through the external mammalian skin. We recently observed a healthy 64-year-old Iranian … extractor. The patient was subsequently lost to follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Considering the efficacy of leeches, it would be favorable to breed a germ-free leech. In Iran, the use of the leeches in surgery, in recent years, has been infrequent. It appears that the positive effects of this ancient remedy may now be explained through scientific methods, promisi …

Traditional Indian medicine-ayurveda-could be the oldest medical system in which leech therapy was adopted for treating specific disease conditions of patients. Some of the indications in which leeches are used are in tumors, hemorrhoids, abscess and boils, skin disorders, ulcers, gout, diseases of the eye, headache, herpes zoster, thrombosis, and wounds. The saliva of the leech consists of anesthetic agents, anticoagulant, antiplatelet aggregation factor, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory substances, and gelatinous substances. Leeches suck the excess blood, reduce the swelling in the tissues, and…

We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with fresh blood in his mouth and a history of sore throat during the past 2 weeks that was unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. Inspection of the oral cavity revealed a black circular mass attached to the posterior wall of the oropharynx. This mass was determined to be a live engorged leech. Leech endoparasitism is caused by aquatic leeches that attach themselves to mucus membranes of body cavities after the host has swum in bodies of fresh water or drunk from unsafe water sources. Pharyngeal hirudiniasis may present in different forms dep…

Spontaneous epistaxis, nasal trauma and foreign bodies are common causes of nasal bleed in children. Epistaxis and haematemesis due to leeches have been reported in literature. Here we present a rare case of severe anemia caused by a single leech infestation of nasal cavity that required blood transfusion.

Antagonists were used to investigate the role of the excitatory amino acid, L-glutamate, in the swim motor program of Hirudo medicinalis. In previous experiments, focal application of L-glutamate or its non-NMDA agonists onto either the segmental swim-gating interneuron (cell 204) or the serotonergic Retzius cell resulted in prolonged excitation of the two cells and often in fictive swimming. Since brief stimulation of the subesophageal trigger interneuron (cell Tr1) evoked a similar response, we investigated the role of glutamate at these synapses. Kynurenic acid and two non-NMDA antagonists,
