Utilization of Legume-Nodule Bacterial Symbiosis in Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils.

With the increasing industrial activity of the growing human population, the accumulation of various contaminants in soil, including heavy metals, has increased rapidly. Heavy metals as non-biodegradable elements persist in the soil environment and may pollute crop plants, further accumulating in the human body causing serious conditions. Hence, phytoremediation of land contamination as an environmental restoration technology is desirable for both human health and broad-sense ecology. Legumes (Fabaceae), which play a special role in nitrogen cycling, are dominant plants in contaminated areas.

A shift toward a new holistic paradigm will help to preserve and better process grain products' food structure for improving their health effects.

This review aims at emphasizing the role played by physical characteristics and physico-chemical properties of the food matrix on the digestive and metabolic fate, and health effects of grain products. It is today obvious that the food matrix conditions the health effects of food products and that we are able to modify this matrix to control the digestive fate of foods, and the metabolic fate of nutrients and bioactive compounds (reverse engineering). In other words, there is no more reason to consider nutrition in a quantitative perspective (i.e., a food is only the sum of its macro-, micro-

[The allergenic significance of legumes].

Leguminous are a cheap source of protein that are cultivated practically throughout the world. They are the main source of food in developing countries. In the Mediterranean area and Middle East, the most commonly consumed legumes are lentils and chickpea. In the United States, United Kingdom and south-east Asia, the major legumes involved in food allergy are considered to be peanut and soy bean, respectively. The clinical manifestations of the allergy to legumes are similar for all legumes and range from oral allergy syndrome, urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis and asthmatic crises to anaphylaxi

Purification of a multicatalytic protease complex from developing winged bean seeds by indirect immunoaffinity chromatography.

Many protease inhibitors have been characterized from leguminous seeds but very little is known about seed proteases which are supposedly regulated by these inhibitors. We have developed an indirect immunoaffinity chromatography system for the purification of cognate proteases from the same source, based on preferential high salt elution of the enzyme from a ternary complex of the protease, the inhibitor, and the anti-inhibitor IgG. Using anti-winged bean chymotrypsin inhibitor (WbCI) IgG as an affinity ligand, a multicatalytic protease complex has been purified from developing winged bean (Ps

[Effect of various solvents on the extraction of protein fractions of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)].

A study was carried out to determine the effect of different solvents on the extraction of protein fractions in beans. Black bean protein was extracted with the following solvents: distilled water, 0.01 M sodium hydroxide, 0.05 M sodium chloride, and 70% ethanol. By using each solvent under different conditions, it was possible to establish the optimum ones for the best extraction and fractionation of proteins from leguminous seeds. These conditions were the following: one hour agitation at room temperature, three successive extractions with the same solvent, and a ratio of solid to solvent of

A Single Amino Acid in Cucumber Mosaic Virus Determines Systemic Infection in Legumes: Species-Specific Differences in Key Residue Locations.

Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), a major grain legume in Asia, is susceptible to infection by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), which threatens crop productivity. Here, we characterized the CMV-Pa3 isolate from adzuki bean and investigated the role of specific amino acid residues in the viral 2a protein influencing systemic infection of legumes. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that CMV-Pa3 is genetically distinct from other legume-infecting isolates. Inoculation assays revealed that CMV-Pa3 causes systemic infection in adzuki bean, cowpea, soybean, and pea, whereas the control isolate CMV-Rs1 is r

Effects of Animal-Based and Plant-Based Nitrates and Nitrites on Human Health: Beyond Nitric Oxide Production.

Nitrate (NO3) and nitrite (NO2) are important nitrogen compounds that play a vital role in the nitrogen cycle, contributing to plant nutrition and broader ecological functions. Nitrates are produced from nitric acid (HNO3), while nitrites come from nitrous acid (HNO2). These substances are commonly found in the environment, especially in food and water, due to contamination from both human and natural sources. Human activities are major contributors to the high levels of nitrates found in water, leading to environmental pollution. Although nitrogen is crucial for plant growth, excessive fertil

Mucuna pruriens to treat Parkinson's disease in low-income countries: Recommendations and practical guidelines from the farmer to clinical trials. Paving the way for future use in clinical practice.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive and disabling neurodegenerative disease that rapidly worsens and results in premature mortality if left untreated. Although levodopa is the gold standard treatment for PD globally, its accessibility and affordability are severely limited in low- and middle-income countries worldwide. In this scenario, Mucuna pruriens (MP), a leguminous plant growing wild in tropical regions, emerges as a potential alternative or adjunct to levodopa-based medications due to its cost-effectiveness and global natural availability. Recent studies have demonstrated that MP

MsYSL6, A Metal Transporter Gene of Alfalfa, Increases Iron Accumulation and Benefits Cadmium Resistance.

Iron (Fe) is necessary for plant growth and development. The mechanism of uptake and translocation in Cadmium (Cd) is similar to iron, which shares iron transporters. Yellow stripe-like transporter (YSL) plays a pivotal role in transporting iron and other metal ions in plants. In this study, MsYSL6 and its promoter were cloned from leguminous forage alfalfa. The transient expression of MsYSL6-GFP indicated that MsYSL6 was localized to the plasma membrane and cytoplasm. The expression of MsYSL6 was induced in alfalfa by iron deficiency and Cd stress, which was further proved by GUS activity dri

A simple method for creating transgenic pea hairy roots using a Japanese pea cultivar and a Japanese Rhizobium radiobacter strain.

Pea (Pisum sativum) is an agriculturally important leguminous crop cultivated worldwide. It is also the plant from which phytoalexin was isolated for the first time. Several studies have investigated gene functions using pea hairy root culture systems. However, the procedures for producing hairy roots are relatively complicated and only a few pea cultivars and Rhizobium strains have been used. In this study, we established a simple method for generating transgenic hairy roots using a pea cultivar and a Rhizobium strain available in Japan. The transformation efficiency for the transgenic hairy

ATP-Binding Cassette G Transporters SGE1 and MtABCG13 Control Stigma Exsertion.

Stigma exsertion is an important agricultural trait that facilitates the application of heterosis in crop breeding. Although several quantitative trait loci associated with stigma exsertion have been fine-mapped or cloned, the underlying genetic basis, particularly in legumes, remains unclear. In this study, we identified and characterized the exserted stigma mutant stigma exsertion1 (sge1) in the model legume Medicago truncatula The exserted stigma phenotype of sge1 is mainly caused by physical interaction between floral organs, in which normal petal and stamen elongation are inhibited due to

Safety of high-dose Puerariae Lobatae Radix in adolescent rats based on metabolomics.

Puerariae Lobatae Radix (PLR) is the dried root of the leguminous plant Pueraria lobata and is a common component of health products and medicines. Although it is considered safe, some studies have reported that PLR has hepatotoxicity and estrogen-like effects. In this study, the safety of high doses of PLR water extract administered to adolescent SD rats for 30 days was evaluated by biochemical, histopathological, and metabolomic analyses. Overall, there were no significant differences between the low-dose and blank control groups in parameter values, including organ wet weight, organ coeffic

Chia Seed Allergy: Emerging Clinical Evidence, Molecular Allergens, and the Unresolved Question of Cross-Reactivity.

Chia seed (Salvia hispanica L.) is increasingly incorporated into contemporary foods, yet its allergenic potential remains poorly characterized. Published clinical evidence is limited to a small number of case reports, conference reports, and one case series describing immediate IgE-mediated reactions, cutaneous manifestations, and anaphylaxis. Molecular studies have identified candidate allergenic protein families, including 2S albumins, 7S vicilin-like globulins, 11S legumin-like globulins, and oleosins, and have demonstrated IgE recognition and potential cross-reactivity, particularly with

"To Bean or Not to Bean": Therein lie the hype and the hope. Advice to people with Parkinson in my clinic about Mucuna pruriens.

Mucuna pruriens (MP), a leguminous plant naturally rich in levodopa, has regained attention as both a traditional remedy and a potential therapeutic option for Parkinson's disease (PD). Its appeal is shaped by contrasting contexts: in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), MP may represent a cost-effective, locally cultivable alternative where access to levodopa-based medications is severely limited; in high-income countries, patients are often drawn to its "natural" label, perceiving it as safer or more holistic than synthetic drugs. Evidence from randomised and open-label clinical trials

Research progress on flavonoid-mediated communication between plants and rhizosphere microorganisms.

Flavonoids are important components of plant root exudates and key chemical signals mediating cross-kingdom interactions between plants and rhizosphere microorganisms. Based on the theory of chemical communication in the plant rhizosphere, this article systematically reviews the biosynthesis and secretion characteristics of flavonoids, as well as their major regulatory roles in plant-microbe interactions, including symbiotic signal induction in legume-rhizobium associations, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization, recruitment of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, inhibition of pathogeni

Dual-action MINPP1 effectors enable Riptortus pedestris to overcome phytic acid antinutritional defense and suppress pattern-triggered immunity.

Phytic acid (IP6) serves as the primary phosphorus reservoir in plant seeds and functions as a potent antinutritional defense to inhibit herbivore growth. Despite this formidable barrier, the bean bug Riptortus pedestris preferentially feeds on IP6-rich leguminous seeds, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying this dietary adaptation have remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that R. pedestris overcomes this nutritional defense by co-opting the ancient, highly conserved multiple inositol polyphosphate phosphatase 1 (MINPP1) family. We identified four RPMINPP1 paralogs abundantly expressed in

Psoralidin induces pyroptosis in both tumor cells and macrophages as well as enhances nature killer cell cytotoxicity to suppress hepatocellular carcinoma.

Psoralidin is a major component of the traditional Chinese medicine Psoraleae Fructus, which is derived from the dried mature fruit of the leguminous plant Psoralea corylifolia L. and possesses many pharmacological effects, including anti-tumor effects. However, the mechanism through which psoralidin protects against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. In our study, we found that psoralidin induced pyroptosis and gasdermin E (GSDME) cleavage in HepG2 and Hepa1-6 cells, which were reversed by the caspase-3 inhibitor Z-DEVD-FMK. Moreover, psoralidin induced mitochondrial reactive oxy

Comparative transcriptomic and metabolite profiling reveals genotype-specific responses to Fe starvation in chickpea.

Iron deficiency is a major nutritional stress that severely impacts crop productivity worldwide. However, molecular intricacies and subsequent physiological and metabolic changes in response to Fe starvation, especially in leguminous crops like chickpea, remain elusive. In the present study, we investigated physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic reprogramming in two chickpea genotypes (H6013 and L4958) with contrasting seed iron concentrations upon Fe deficiency. Our findings revealed that iron starvation affected growth and physiological parameters of both chickpea genotypes. Comparati
