Four zinc compounds (acetate, nitrate, chloride and sulfate) were administered po or ip to rats and mice. The LD50 values were determined. Animals were observed for 14 days. The majority of deaths occurred during the first 48 hr. The clinical and physical signs appearing after intoxication included miosis, conjunctivitis, decreased food and water consumption and hemorrhages and hematomas in the tail. These changes decreased with time which would suggest a quick elimination of zinc. To determine the effect of 6 chelating agents on the toxicity of zinc, various doses of zinc acetate (66-330 mg/k

Previously we found that a decrease in glutathione (GSH) concentration is a general phenomenon in aging organisms. This suggested our hypothesis that the capacity for detoxification involving GSH will decrease in senescence. Thus the present objectives were to determine the toxicity of acetaminophen (APAP) and its relationship to GSH status in the aging mosquito. Different concentrations of APAP in Aedes Ringer were injected into adult mosquitoes of different ages through the life-span. The results showed that the LD50 values were highest in the young adult, plateaued in the mature, and decrea

Suspensions of the Legionnaries' disease bacterium (Legionella pneumophila; LDB) were prepared from the yolk sacs of infected egg embryos, the spleens of infected guinea pigs, and cultures of the organism propagated on enriched Mueller-Hinton agar. Each suspension was titrated to determine the number of bacterial colonies (cfu), yolk sac 50% lethal doses (YSLD50), guinea pig 50% infectious doses (GPID50), and guinea pig 50% lethal doses (GPLD50) produced by 1 ml of inoculum. The numbers of cfu/YSLD50, GPID50, and GPLD50 were then calculated for each suspension. The suspension from yolk sacs ha

Reaction of haloacetate with barbital and methylphenobarbital in polar aprotic solvents in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 gave N-carboalkoxymethyl derivatives in good yields. Acidic hydrolysis of the latter compounds affords N-carboxymethyl derivatives of barbital 8 or methylphenobarbital 7. From acid 7 and 8 via acid chlorides, amides 11--20 were prepared. These amides lack anticonvulsant activity and show only slight sedative and analgesic action.

The evaluation of pesticide risks to pollinators has gained momentum in recent years, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, due to the high diversity of bee species in these regions. These regions host many stingless bees, which, according to recent studies in the Neotropics, are highly susceptible to pesticides. Currently, it is a standard practice to use the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) as a model organism to predict pesticide risks for other bees. However, while some studies suggest that A. mellifera can adequately represent neotropical stingless bees, others report discre

The problem of toxic pollution of the environment by combustion products of explosives and rocket fuel is becoming increasingly important in the context of intensified military operations. In this study, the toxicity of TNT derivatives, hydrazine-based compounds, and nitroaromatic transformation products related to explosive and rocket fuel contamination was evaluated using the model organisms Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758 and Opatrum sabulosum (Linnaeus, 1761). We chose hydrazine derivatives, nitroanilines, benzene and naphthalene-based nitro compounds that can persist in the ground, water

This study investigated the developmental toxicity of four cyanide-containing compounds (gold cyanide, sodium cyanide, zinc cyanide, and amygdalin) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Fertilized eggs were exposed to concentrations ranging from 1 to 600 ng/mL for 96 h, following the OECD Test Guideline 236. Acute toxicity was determined by calculating the median lethal concentrations (LC₅₀), while developmental toxicity was assessed through a semi-quantitative scoring system based on six morphological endpoints: eye, heart, circulation, yolk sac, tail, and spontaneous movement. Of the compounds

This article focusses on elucidating the toxicological profile of minoxidil, a widely used pharmacological agent for alopecia, through the application of in silico methods (Percepta ACD/Labs software). This research is driven by the need to understand key toxicological endpoints: acute toxicity, skin and eye irritation, genetic toxicity, cardiotoxicity, disruption of the endocrine system, and estimation of various health effects due to the lack of experimental data for this drug. These parameters are critically evaluated to meet the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical industry's safet

Didecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (DDAB) is a quaternary ammonium compound used for the sanitation of drinking water of poultry and water pipelines in farms. There is scarcity of information on the toxicology of DDAB in poultry. This study set out to profile the acute toxicity of DDAB in poultry. Issa brown pullets (n = 34) as experimental birds were orally administered varying doses of DDAB, using a syringe, after 12 h fasting, and observed for toxicity over 14 days. Control birds (n = 10) were similarly given normal saline orally. Toxic signs in the experimental birds were depression, anorex

The golden apple snail Pomacea canaliculata is an invasive pest that causes extensive damage to agricultural production. P. canaliculata is also an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which causes human eosinophilic meningitis. In this study, the molluscicidal activity and safety profile of a novel molluscicide PBQ [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea] were evaluated. PBQ exhibited strong molluscicidal potency against adult and juvenile snails (LC50 values of 0.39 and 0.07 mg/L, respectively). In field trials, PBQ killed 99.42% of the snails at 0.25 g a.i./m2. An acute toxici

There is currently no data regarding the toxicity or the in vivo effects of the venom the Aegaeobuthus nigrocinctus species, since it has not been studied thus far according to the best of our knowledge. In the present study, and for the first time, the median lethal dose, the in vivo toxic effects, the histological changes in some of the vital organs were all determined as well as an assessment was made of the histological, biochemical and haematological changes which were caused by the venom injected in mice. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the scorpion venom for mice was found to be 0.38 m

The systemic effects generated by Porthidium lansbergii lansbergii envenoming, a species found in the northern region of Colombia, is poorly known. The present study aimed to analyze for the first time the mice's behavior, the histological alterations, and changes in biochemical markers levels resulting from the intraperitoneal injection of an LD50 of P. lansbergii lansbergii snake venom on mice. The envenoming mice displayed hypodynamic condition, clonic head movements, accompanied by bradypnea and thoracoabdominal imbalance. After 7 h of envenoming, the mice showed an ecchymotic region at th

In the last decades, major research efforts have been done to investigate the insecticidal activity of plant-based products against mosquitoes. This is a modern and timely challenge in parasitology, aimed to reduce the frequent overuse of synthetic pesticides boosting resistance development in mosquitoes and causing serious threats to human health and environment. This review covers the huge amount of literature available on plant extracts tested as mosquito larvicides, particularly aqueous and alcoholic ones, due to their easy formulation in water without using surfactants. We analysed result

INTRODUCTION: Assaying venom toxicity in a suitable model system is often tricky, since normally the amount of venom is in short supply, and the assay subjects, i.e., typically mice, require large amounts. There is also no guarantee that the effects observed in the bioassay reflect the true nature of the venom's intended effects, as the animals used for assessment might not be the prey items to which the venom has evolved.
METHODS: We harvested tarantula venoms from the Indian Poecilotheria regalis and the Mexican Bonnetina papalutlensis using light anesthesia and electrical stimulation. We f

This study describes the cytotoxic and phytotoxic activities of the crude extract of Heliotropium strigosum and its resultant fractions. In brine shrimp toxicology assays, profound cytotoxicity was displayed by ethyl acetate (LD50 8.3 μg/ml) and chloroform (LD50 8.8 μg/ml) fractions, followed by relatively weak crude methanolic extract of H. strigosum (LD50 909 μg/ml) and n-hexane fraction (LD50 1000 μg/ml). In case of phytotoxicity activity against Lemna acquinoctialis, highest phytotoxic effect was showed by ethyl acetate fraction (LD50 91.0 μg/ml), while chloroform fraction, plant crude ext

In this paper, the single and joint toxicity of perchloroethylene (PCE) and cadmium (Cd) on grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) was observed by static test method, and the joint toxicity was evaluated by additive index method. The results showed that the LCs0 of PCE and Cd in 24, 48, 72 and 96 h was 49.12, 41.68, 36.37 and 34.30 mg x L(-1), and 45.58, 34.81, 28.63 and 24.05 mg x L(-1), respectively. Both the two test chemicals had high toxicity on C. idellus, and Cd had higher single toxicity than PCE. When the toxicity ratio was 1:1 and exposure time was 24, 48, 72 and 96 h, the LC50 of PCE

Pesticides can cause damage to man and beneficial organisms. Some sub-lethal effects of pesticides were studied in birds with a view to identifying characteristic biochemical responses that may be useful for the monitoring of exposure to sub-lethal levels in the field. Pesticides were used: demeton-S-methyl, (DSM), chlorpyriphos, chlorfenviphos, triazophos, pirimicarb, methiocarb and permethrin. Blood was collected before dosing, and 2, 6, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the treatment from the brachial vein of birds. Enzyme activities were assayed in the plasma or serum samples obtained. The assays

Seven marine benthic crustaceans were exposed in 4 d water-only toxicity tests to five concentrations of fluoranthene. After exposures, mortality (LC50) and the ability to bury in clean sediment (EC50) were determined. Survivors were then exposed to UV radiation for 1 h. The differences between LC50s and EC50s before and after UV exposure were used to assess photoinduced toxicity. UV exposure enhanced fluoranthene toxicity by as much as tenfold in five of the seven species tested (Rhepoxynius abronius, Eohaustorius estuarius, Leptocheirus plumulosus, Grandidierella japonica, and Corophium insi
