Oral Lichen Planus Associated With Lichen Planus Pigmentosus and Lichen Sclerosus in Monozygotic Twins.

Lichen planus (LP) is a mucocutaneous immune-mediated disease of unknown etiology. It is more prevalent in women and usually occurs between the third and sixth decades of life. Oral lesions may or may not be associated with skin and genital lesions. Although the role of genetic factors is still undetermined, reports of LP in more than one family member are not uncommon. However, the occurrence of LP in monozygotic twins is rare. We report a rare case of 42-year-old female monozygotic twins presenting oral LP. This report is even rarer because one of the patients had cutaneous lesions of an unu

Vulvar dermatoses: lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, and vulval dermatitis/lichen simplex chronicus.

In our vulvar specialty clinic at Oxford Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford, UK), dermatoses are frequently seen. A recent survey of new patients showed that lichen sclerosus was the most commonly diagnosed vulvar dermatosis; approximately one third of the women had this disorder. Vulvar dermatitis was observed in 20% to 25% of new patients, but lichen planus was rare. Differences were observed in treatment outcomes for patients with vulvar dermatoses, such as lichen sclerosus and lichen planus, versus those with dermatologic disorders affecting the vulva, such as psoriasis and eczema.

Ultramafic specialist lichens persist through flexible symbioses structured by climate-driven filtering and modulated by substrate effects.

Ultramafic substrates impose severe edaphic stress characterised by metal toxicity, nutrient imbalance, and extreme microclimatic conditions, creating spatially fragmented habitats that can shape evolutionary and ecological dynamics of associated organisms. Together with climatic variation, such factors may also influence the structure of holobiont communities of lichenized fungi. Here we investigated the ultramafic specialist lichen Solenopsora liparina across its entire range. We contextualized its symbiotic associations using calcicolous congeners (S. candicans and S. cesatii), as ecologica

Herbal extracts, lichens and biomolecules as natural photo-protection alternatives to synthetic UV filters. A systematic review.

Besides the unquestionable positive effects of solar exposure for human health, UV rays have been widely investigated for toxicology aspects related to excessive UVB and UVA doses, which involve sunburns, skin aging, DNA skin damage and tumorigenesis. At present, synthetic and mineral sunscreens are used to protect against these damages but several natural molecules can provide UV protection, including also synergic effect or enhanced photo stability. Although a large number of herbal extracts and plant origin molecules can deserve potential applications, most of the study reported utilizes di

Is the diversity of epiphytic lichens a reliable indicator of air pollution? A case study from Italy.

This work provided additional information for a better interpretation of lichen diversity values in biomonitoring studies of air pollution. The effects of 12 predictive variables were estimated for the Genova province (NW Italy) by means of a non-parametric model. The diversity of epiphytic lichens was strictly correlated with mean annual rainfall and mean annual temperature. Different variables were found to affect the lichen diversity in urban vs. forested areas. In urban areas, air pollutants, mainly SO2, are still the main limiting factor, even if under ameliorating conditions this relatio…

Ocular involvement and complications of lichen planus, lichen planus pigmentosus, and lichen planopilaris: A comprehensive review.

Ocular involvement of lichenoid dermatoses, such as lichen planus (LP), lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP), and lichen planopilaris (LPL), although uncommon, is associated with skin manifestations. Isolated ocular involvement is very rare. When lesions are confined to the skin, the dermatologist inquires and evaluates for oral and genital symptoms and lesions, respectively; hence, eye manifestations are commonly neglected by the non-ophthalmologist. Ocular involvement in LP, LPP, and LPL may result in significant morbidity. An ophthalmic interrogatory and a gross ophthalmic evaluation performed b

Multivariate Chemoprospecting of Five Ethnobotanically Important Himalayan Lichens Identifies Parmotrema austrosinense as a Promising Source of Phenolic Antioxidants.

Lichens are an underexplored reservoir of nutritionally and pharmacologically relevant metabolites. This study provides one of the first comprehensive multivariate profiles of five ethnobotanically important lichen species (Lobaria retigera, Dirinaria consimilis, Parmotrema austrosinense, Ramalina conduplicans, and Usnea orientalis) from Uttarakhand, India, using an integrated screening approach to evaluate and rank their bioactive potential. A combined analysis of nutritional components (protein, carbohydrates, and essential minerals), phytochemicals (total phenolic and flavonoid content), pr…

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest.

Epiphytes of the … ly, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scat …

Small increase in substratum [corrected] pH causes the dieback of one of Europe's most common lichens, Lecanora conizaeoides.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: Lecanora conizaeoides was until recently western and central Europe's most abundant epiphytic lichen species or at least one of the most common epiphytes. The species is adapted to very acidic conditions at pH values around 3 and high concentrations of SO(2) and its derivatives formed in aqueous solution, and thus spread with increasing SO(2) deposition during the 19th and 20th centuries. With the recent decrease of SO(2) emissions to nearly pre-industrial levels within 20 years, L. conizaeoides declined from most of its former range. If still present, the species is no l

EuroGuiderm guideline on lichen sclerosus-introduction into lichen sclerosus.

INTRODUCTION: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is an inflammatory skin disease affecting all ages. LS typically involves the anogenital site where it causes itching and soreness. It may lead to sexual and urinary dysfunction in females and males; however, it may be asymptomatic. First signs of LS are redness and oedema, typically followed by whitening of the genital skin; sometimes fissuring, scarring, shrinkage and fusion of structures may follow in its course. LS is associated with an increased risk of genital cancer. LS has a huge impact on the quality of life of affected patients, and it is important

Coexistence of oral lichen planus and vulvar lichen sclerosus.

OBJECTIVE: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a mucosal variant of lichen planus. Lichen sclerosus (LS) is an inflammatory disorder with a predilection for genital skin. We aimed to identify the characteristics of patients with both mucosal diagnoses. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study included 86 women with both OLP and vulvar LS diagnosed from June 1, 1991 through November 30, 2020 at a Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota; Scottsdale, Arizona; or Jacksonville, Florida. Data included treatments, other cutaneous diagnoses, comorbidities, and information on patch testing and malignant tran

Hypopigmented Macules as Manifestation of Lichen Planus and Lichen Planopilaris.

Lichen planus (LP) is an idiopathic inflammatory disease of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Classic cutaneous LP is characterized by violaceous flat-topped papules that typically favor the extremities. LP on the scalp, otherwise known as lichen planopilaris, classically presents with scarring alopecia, perifollicular erythema and follicular prominence. Although LP pigmentosus presents primarily as hyperpigmentation, there is only one previous report of hypopigmented LP. In this report, the authors report 2 cases of LP that presented primarily as hypopigmented macules in 2 African

Oral lichen planus preceding concomitant lichen planopilaris.

Lichen planus (LP) is an immune-mediated mucocutaneous disorder with a wide array of clinical presentations. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is characterized clinically by striae, desquamation, and/or ulceration. Lichen planopilaris (LPP), a variant of LP, affects the scalp, resulting in perifollicular erythema and scarring of cutaneous surfaces accompanied by hair loss. The association between OLP and LPP has been reported previously with scant information on concomitant or sequential disease presentation. We describe a patient with concomitant OLP and LPP, and to the best of our knowledge, this is
