Autism and multiple pituitary deficiency.

We describe a 9-year-old boy who presented with abnormal development in language and social interaction. He also showed evidence of stereotyped behaviour, thus fulfilling all the criteria for an ICD-10 diagnosis of autism. This was associated with multiple pituitary deficiency. No case of autism associated with hypopituitarism has hitherto been reported. The authors discuss the evidence for linking the two conditions as opposed to accepting them as coincidental. In some studies of autism, anatomical and imaging studies have provided evidence of pathology in the limbic lobe. This lobe plays an …

Brain process for perception of the "out of the body" tactile illusion for virtual object interaction.

"Out of the body" tactile illusion refers to the phenomenon in which one can perceive tactility as if emanating from a location external to … onal processing resulting in the delay for the ERP (event-related potential) and involvement by the limbic lobe. These point to regarding illusion as a memory and recognition task as a possible explanation. The present study demonstrated some basic understanding; how humans process "virtual" objects and the way associated tactile illusion is generated will be …

[A voxel-based morphometry study of grey matter volume changes in neuromyelitis optica patients].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the grey matter volume (GMV) changes in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) patients using a voxel-based morphometry method. METHODS: Whole brain structural images were acquired in 16 NMO patients and 16 gender-and age-matched healthy controls. Comparison of GMV between the two groups was analyzed by VBM8 toolbox of statistical parametric mapping 8. RESULT: Compared with the controls, NMO patients showed decreased GMV in the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, limbic lobe, optic tract, caudate nucleus, thalamus, and cerebellum (all P < 0.005). CONCLUSION…

Altered spontaneous brain activity in Down syndrome and its relation with cognitive outcome.

Although Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of neurodevelopmental delay, few neuroimaging studies have explored this popula … anterior lobe. Decreased activity in DS was found in the left parietal and occipital lobe, the left limbic lobe and the left cerebellum posterior lobe. ReHo analysis showed increased activity in certain DS areas of the left frontal lobe and left rectus, as well as the inferior temporal lobe. The areas with decreased activity in the DS participants were region …

[Clinical course of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis].

A 49-year-old woman presented with increasing memory loss without dementia. The EEG showed slow activity over the temporal lobe. MRT revealed temporal areas of increased signal intensity without gadolinium enhancement. The diagnosis of limbic encephalitis was made after detection of a bronchial carcinoma. A MRT control examination after chemotherapy showed resolution of the abnormalities. This observation may indicate that chemotherapy has modified that part of the immunological system responsible for induction of limbic encephalitis.

Markedly Elevated IgG Index: A Key to Differentiating Neurosyphilis from Autoimmune Limbic Encephalitis.

We herein report a 48-year-old man with neurosyphilis manifesting as limbic encephalitis, initially suspected to be autoimmune limbic encephalitis. The patient exhibited rapid behavioral changes, and magnetic resonance imaging showed high-intensity lesions in both medial temporal lobes. The diagnosis was based on symptoms, cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, and positive serum tests for syphilis. Notably, the cerebrospinal fluid immunoglobulin G index was markedly elevated (4.91). This case highlights the diagnostic challenges in differentiating neurosyphilis from autoimmune limbic encephalitis

Case report: Overlapping anti-AMPAR encephalitis with anti-IgLON5 disease post herpes simplex virus encephalitis.

Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is the result of an autoimmune process that occurs as a rapidly advancing encephalopathy. Autoimmune encephalitis was commonly linked to herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) as the most frequently identified virus. The main areas affected by this invasion are the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and limbic system. Limbic encephalitis is a highly uncommon occurrence involving anti-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) encephalitis and anti-IgLON family member 5 (IgLON5) disease, both belonging to the rare category. As far as we know, this i

Alterations of Brain Structural Network in Parkinson's Disease With and Without Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) has a strong association with alpha synucleinpathies such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and PD patients with RBD tend to have a poorer prognosis. However, we still know little about the pathogenesis of RBD in PD. Therefore, we aim to detect the alterations of structural correlation network (SCN) in PD patients with and without RBD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 191 PD patients, including 51 patients with possible RBD (pRBD) and 140 patients with non-possible RBD, and 76 normal controls were included in the present st

Limbic encephalitis associated with elevated antithyroid antibodies.

Immune-mediated limbic encephalitis affects both adults and children. Patients typically present with seizures, memory problems, and imaging changes in the medial temporal lobes. Both paraneoplastic and nonparaneoplastic forms have been described in which the antibody to the voltage-gated potassium channel-complex associated protein, leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1, is most commonly reported. Elevated antithyroid antibodies have also been reported in a range of neurological syndromes with encephalopathy, such as limbic encephalitis, often collectively termed Hashimoto encephalopathy, a condi

Consistent frontal-limbic-occipital connections in distinguishing treatment-resistant and non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TR-SZ) and non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (NTR-SZ) lack specific biomarkers to distinguish from each other. This investigation aims to identify consistent dysfunctional brain connections with different atlases, multiple feature selection strategies, and several classifiers in distinguishing TR-SZ and NTR-SZ. STUDY DESIGN: 55 TR-SZs, 239 NTR-SZs, and 87 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Resting-state functional connection (FC) matrices were constructed from

Von Economo neurons: Cellular specialization of human limbic cortices?

Von Economo neurons (VENs) have been mentioned in the medical literature since the second half of the 19th century; however, it was not until the second decade of the 20th century that their cytomorphology was described in detail. To date, VENs have been found in limbic sectors of the frontal, temporal and insular lobes. In humans, their density seems to decrease in the caudo-rostral and ventro-dorsal direction; that is, from the anterior regions of the cingulate and insular cortices towards the frontal pole and the superior frontal gyrus. Several studies have provided similar descriptions of

Bilateral astrocytoma involving the limbic system precipitating disabling amnesia and seizures.

Astrocytomas involving the limbic system are usually unilateral in nature. We report a very unusual case where a low-grade astrocytoma originating in the left temporal lobe spread to the right hippocampus through the hippocampal commissure to cause disabling amnesia and seizures. Some improvement in the memory deficit was facilitated by identification of complex partial status epilepticus. EEG should be performed in all patients with lesions of the limbic system and neuropsychological problems if ongoing seizure activity is not to be missed.

Developmental Pattern of Individual Morphometric Similarity Network in the Human Fetal Brain.

The development of the cerebral cortex during the fetal period is a complex yet well-coordinated process. MRI-based morphological brain netw … onnections at both the edge and node levels. Between- and within-lobe analysis illustrated that the limbic lobe became more similar to other lobes, while the parietal and occipital lobes became more dissimilar to other lobes. Graph theoretical analysis indicated that the small-world structure of the fetal morphological network appeared as early as 22 weeks an …

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: Subcortical Tau Depositions Are Associated with Cortical Perfusion in Frontal and Limbic Regions.

In progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), subcortical tau and cortical perfusion can be assessed using the tracer [18F]PI-2620. We investigated if subcortical tau (globus pallidus internus, dentate nucleus) and frontal/limbic perfusion correlate in a cohort of 32 PSP patients. Tau in subcortical regions showed significant negative correlation with perfusion in limbic cortex. Perfusion in frontal regions was negatively associated with tau in both subcortical regions, but the significance threshold was only passed for the dentate nucleus. A reason could be a diaschisis-like phenomenon; that is, s

Diminished emotional sweating in patients with limbic encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: Sweating on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, so-called emotional sweating, is considered to be mediated by the limbic system, including the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex. To reveal involvement of the limbic system in emotional sweating, we evaluated emotional sweating on the palms in patients with limbic encephalitis. METHODS: Sweat and skin vasoconstriction responses to arousal stimuli were recorded on the palms of 7 patients with limbic encephalitis caused by viral infection (n=3) or immune-mediated encephalitis (n=4). All patients had amnesia, and magnetic

Comprehensive mapping of the exterior architecture of the dromedary camel brain.

The morphological perspective of the camel brain remains largely unexplored. Therefore, studying the topography of the camel brain is of crucial importance. This study aimed to provide a detailed color-coded topographic representation of the camel brain's gross anatomy and nomenclature, showing its various gyri and sulci and their borders. We compared them to previously known information to develop a detailed description of camel brain exterior architecture. Our research identified distinctive gyri and sulci with discrete positions and surrounding structures, allowing us to define sulci bounda

Autoantibodies to glutamate receptor GluRepsilon2 in a patient with limbic encephalitis associated with relapsing polychondritis.

Limbic encephalitis is a rare central nervous system (CNS) manifestation of relapsing polychondritis (RP). Vasculitis is assumed to be the cause of CNS involvement in RP. Several studies, however, have described CNS involvement in RP with no evidence of vasculitis but with a more nonspecific inflammatory picture. We report a patient with limbic encephalitis associated with RP who presented with anti-glutamate receptor (GluR) epsilon2 (NR2B) autoantibodies in his cerebrospinal fluid and sera. Brain MRI showed a high signal intensity lesion in the medial temporal lobe and progressive atrophy wit

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. VII. Summary: a common genetic disorder causing disinhibition of the limbic system.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is one of the most common genetic disorders affecting man. Approximately one in 100 individuals manifests one or more of the aspects of the TS gene. This series of papers has emphasized that although motor and vocal tics are the hallmark of TS, the complete range of behavioral problems is much broader. This spectrum of behavior can be explained on the basis of the TS gene causing an imbalance of the mesencephalic-mesolimbic dopamine pathways, resulting in disinhibition of the limbic system.
