Primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma: clinical and histological aspects.

According to the WHO-EORTC classification of cutaneous lymphomas, primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma are now well characterized. We report here a case of primary cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma in a 51 year-old man in which the diagnosis was made using both histology and immunopathology. The patient had no remarkable medical history, no history of either acute inflammation or insect bite, and presented with a 5 cm solitary asymptomatic erythematous firm, multinodular and infiltrated plaque on the back for 12 months. Histological examination and immunohistochemical study of

Splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma associated with primary Sjögren's syndrome.

We describe a 67-year-old woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome who developed a splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, and complained of a dry mouth and Raynaud's phenomenon. She had splenomegaly, swollen lymph nodes and monoclonal IgM-kappa cryoglobulin. After splenectomy, Raynaud's phenomenon had improved with the decrease of cryoglobulin. This is the first case of primary Sjögren's syndrome with splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma to be reported.

Nongastric marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.

A retrospective survey of patients with pathologically reviewed extragastric mucosa-associated lymphoma tissue (MALT) lymphomas from 20 institutions was performed. A total of 180 patients with histologically confirmed diagnosis of extragastric MALT lymphomas were studied. Their median age was 59 years (range, 21-92 years). Ann Arbor stage I disease was present in 115 patients (64%) and stage II disease in 16 (9%). Most cases were in the low or low-intermediate risk groups according to the International Prognostic Index (IPI). Forty-one (23%) patients had involvement of more than one extranodal

Primary extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the fallopian tube.

BACKGROUND: Only 2% of all extranodal primary lymphomas affect the female genital tract. Involvement of the fallopian tubes by primary lymphoma is extremely rare. CASE: A 34-year-old patient presented with the symptoms of salpingitis. Laparoscopy with salpingectomy was performed. Salpingitis caused by Acinetobacter species was diagnosed and antibiotic treatment was administered. Histologic examination of the fallopian tube revealed primary extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MALT-type lymphoma) of the fallopian tube. After 12 months no tumoral recurrence occurred. CONCLUSION: Although

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy findings in marginal zone B cell lymphoma.

Marginal zone B cell lymphomas (MZBCLs) represent a category of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which may arise in a wide variety of extranodal organs where they are termed low grade B cell lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). MZBCLs may involve primarily lymph nodes and or spleen where they are designated monocytoid B cell lymphoma or splenic marginal zone lymphoma, respectively. Recognition of this category of lymphoma, in particular, extranodal MALT lymphoma, is clinically significant in determining optimal therapy. Although there have been recent case reports describing the cytolo

An unusual case of primary leptomeningeal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma.

Primary leptomeningeal lymphomas are rare, and usually follow a rapid clinical course with early systemic involvement. A 60-year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of worsening seizures and memory loss. Neuroimaging showed widespread meningeal calcification. After extensive investigations a meningeal biopsy revealed a low-grade B-cell lymphoma categorized as an extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, attributed to the same histological group as the MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphomas described in the stomach, thyroid, salivary glands and orbit. There was no evidence of

BCL6 gene rearrangements also occur in marginal zone B-cell lymphoma.

Marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBCL) represents a distinct subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) which has been recently recognized and defined as a disease entity. Cytogenetically, these lymphomas reveal a high prevalence of trisomy 3, and recent data obtained by comparative genomic hybridization indicate that the chromosomal regions 3q21-23 and 3q25-29 might be of particular pathogenetic significance. We identified structural chromosomal abnormalities involving the region 3q27 and rearrangements of the BCL6 proto-oncogene in three out of 34 (9%) well-defined cases of extranodal, no

Monocytoid B-cell lymphoma, a tumour related to the marginal zone.

Monocytoid B-lymphocytes are a B-cell subset present in subcapsular sinuses in some cases of lymphadenitis. We describe a case of lymphoma of this cell type. The tumour shows a distinctive morphology characterized by concentric strands of tumour cells around lymphoid follicles with hyperplastic germinal centres and conserved mantle zones. Electron microscopy of these cells shows short cellular processes as well as moderate development of endoplasmic reticulum. The phenotype of the tumour was monoclonal IgM-kappa, distinct from other node-based B-cell subpopulations and suggesting a possible re

Histological Transformation and Clonal Relationship of Subcutaneous Marginal Zone B-Cell Lymphoma and Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Histological transformation (HT) is an exceptionally uncommon and poorly understood event where a low-grade or indolent B-cell lymphoma transforms into a more aggressive entity, typically diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The pathogenesis is unclear; however, HT is associated with a worse prognosis. This article reports a unique case of marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) limited to skin/subcutis (confirmed with PET-CT) that subsequently developed DLBCL, followed by nodal MZL. We explored phenotypic, molecular genetic, and cytogenetic findings in subcutaneous MZL with HT to DLBCL and subsequent

A case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma transformed from immunoglobulin A-producing marginal zone B-cell lymphoma.

We present a rare case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma transformed from immunoglobulin (Ig) A-secreting marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. A 62-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for examination of a disseminated pulmonary shadow. Gradual swelling of bilateral axilla and right inguinal lymph nodes were noted after admission. Histological examination of the lymph node biopsy specimen revealed the appearance of marginal zone B-cell lymphoma. The surface Ig of lymphoma cells was IgA-kappa, which coincided with the class of monoclonal Ig found in the patient's serum. The lymph node swelling

[Transformation of CD5-positive nodal marginal zone lymphoma to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma].

Nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL) is a form of nodal B-cell lymphoma exhibiting proliferation of abnormal lymphocytes at the circumference of the mantle zone in the lymph nodes. Although the outcome of patients with this disease is often favorable, we recently encountered a patient with a CD5-positive NMZL who was resistant to chemotherapy. A 67-year-old woman complaining of systemic lymph node swelling was referred to our hospital. After biopsy of the neck lymph node, she was diagnosed with CD5-positive NMZL. Disease progression was revealed after 16 months, and she was initially treated wi

Nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas may arise from different subsets of marginal zone B lymphocytes.

Nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL) is a rare and not extensively studied entity that accounts for approximately 2% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Complementarity-determining regions 2 and 3 (CDR2, CDR3) of the immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable region (V(H)) genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cloned, and sequenced in 8 patients with nodal MZL. All showed a potentially functional V(H) rearrangement. The use of V(H) gene families was unbiased and without overrepresentation of any particular V(H) gene or gene family. The presence of somatic V(H) mutations was detected

Burkitt lymphoma following splenic marginal zone lymphoma. evidence for two independent B-cell clones.

We report the progression of splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) with circulating villous lymphocytes to Burkitt lymphoma with the presence of a t(8;14)(q24;q32) followed by a highly aggressive course. While the initial indolent lymphoma had an IgM lambda immunophenotype the Burkitt lymphoma was IgM kappa-positive. Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IGH) sequence analysis showed no identity between the two clones. We conclude that Burkitt lymphoma can occur in patients with SMZL, although not necessarily of identical clonal origin.
