BACKGROUND: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a multifunctional cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of human diseases including inflammatory neurological diseases. Its role in the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria is unknown. Cerebral malaria is a life-threatening complication of falciparum malaria with approximately 20%-30% of patients dying despite appropriate anti-malarial treatment. The reason for this cerebral malaria mortality is still unknown although host proinflammatory factors have been shown to be evidently important. The current study investigated the r

The macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a key proinflammatory mediator. Two functional polymorphisms have been identified in the promoter region of the MIF gene. We attempted to clarify the associations of these polymorphisms with the development of gastric cancer. The study was performed in 229 patients with gastric cancer and 428 subjects with no evidence of gastric malignancies on the upper gastro-duodenal endoscopy. The severity of histological chronic gastritis was classified according to the updated Sydney system. Overall, the 5-CATT carriers had a reduced risk of developing

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a widely expressed cytokine involved in various biological processes. Although MIF's functions in cancer have not been completely elucidated, its expression has usually been correlated with tumour progression and aggressiveness, and it is currently discussed as a new promising target for novel therapies. Recent studies seem to confirm its active role in melanoma pathobiology; however, its expression has not yet been extensively studied in melanocytic tumours. We evaluated MIF protein expression in 126 skin lesions, including benign and atypical n

To elucidate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in ocular inflammation, we examined the localization of MIF in the normal anterior uveal tract of rats. Immunohistochemistry using an anti-MIF antibody revealed that MIF was present in non-pigment epithelial cells of the ciliary body and the epithelial cells of the iris. Western blot analysis of these tissues showed a single band specific for MIF protein. The expression of MIF mRNA in these tissues was further confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Since MIF is known to be a potent proinflammatory cyto

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading global cause of death, driven by complex mechanisms, in which chronic inflammation plays a central role. Inflammatory pathways contribute to all stages of CVD, from endothelial dysfunction and plaque formation to erosion, rupture and myocardial injury. Among the mediators implicated, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has emerged as a pivotal player. MIF is a unique cytokine with chemokine-like activity that promotes leukocyte recruitment, amplifies inflammatory cascades and modulates vascular function. Elevated circulating and tissue

Serological tests offer the potential in order to improve the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) plays a protective role in infection control in TB; however, to date, no studies on antibody responses to MIF have been reported. We measured immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG responses to MIF in individuals with either active tuberculosis (ATB; n = 65), latent tuberculosis (LTBI; n = 53), or in non-infected individuals (NI; n = 62). The QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) assay was used in order to screen for LTBI. The level of IgA against MIF was significant

Trophoblast cells are specific for placenta, the organ necessary for development of the fetus. Trophoblast derived choriocarcinoma is a rare cancer, with high metastatic potential, invading surrounding tissues and distant organs. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in a wide range of biological processes, which is increased in almost all human cancers. Expression of MIF in normal and choriocarcinoma trophoblast cells is investigated here, using normal extravillous trophoblast derived cell line HTR-8/SVneo, and choriocarcinoma cell lines JAR and JEG3.

Chemokines orchestrate leukocyte recruitment in atherosclerosis and their blockade is a promising anti-atherosclerotic strategy, but few chemokine-based approaches have advanced into clinical trials, in part owing to the complexity and redundancy of the chemokine network. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pivotal mediator of atherosclerotic lesion formation. It has been characterized as an inflammatory cytokine and atypical chemokine that promotes atherogenic leukocyte recruitment and lesional inflammation through interactions with the chemokine receptors CXCR2 and CXCR4, but a

BACKGROUND: The host genetic factors play important role in determining the outcome of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an important host cytokine, which is a key regulator of innate immune system. Genetic variants in MIF gene have been found to be associated with several inflammatory and infectious diseases. Role of MIF is well documented in leishmaniasis diseases, including Indian visceral leishmaniasis, where elevated level of serum MIF has been associated with VL phenotypes. However, there was no genetic study to correlate MIF variants in VL, the

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a conserved cytokine found as a homotrimer protein. It is found in a wide spectrum of cell types in the body including neuronal and non-neuronal cells. MIF is implicated in several biological processes; chemo-attraction, cytokine activity, and receptor binding, among other functions. More recently, a chaperone-like activity has been added to its repertoire. In this review, we focus on the implication of MIF in the central nervous system and peripheries, its role in neurological disorders, and the mechanisms by which MIF is regulated. Numerous stu

BACKGROUND: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a structurally unique inflammatory cytokine that controls cellular signaling in human physiology and disease through extra- and intracellular processes. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor has been shown to mediate both disease-exacerbating and beneficial effects, but the underlying mechanism(s) controlling these diverse functions are poorly understood.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we have identified an S-nitros(yl)ation modification of MIF that regulates the protective functional phenotype of MIF in myocardial reperfusion injury. M

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) functions as a proinflammatory cytokine when secreted from the cell, but it also exhibits antioxidant properties by virtue of its intrinsic oxidoreductase activity. Since increased production of ROS is implicated in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy, we hypothesized that the redox activity of MIF protects the myocardium when exposed to hemodynamic stress. In a mouse model of myocardial hypertrophy induced by transverse aortic coarctation (TAC) for 10 days, we showed that growth of the MIF-deficient heart was significantly greater by 32

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an abundantly expressed proinflammatory cytokine playing a critical role in innate immunity and sepsis and other inflammatory diseases. We examined whether functional MIF gene polymorphisms (-794 CATT(5-8) microsatellite and -173 G/C SNP) were associated with the occurrence and outcome of meningococcal disease in children. The CATT(5) allele was associated with the probability of death predicted by the Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 (P=0.001), which increased in correlation with the CATT(5) copy number (P=0.04). The CATT(5) allele, but not the -1
