Does Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?

MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields. While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and humans to different sources of electromagnetic fields such as cellular phones, mobile base stations, mobile phone jammers, laptop computers, radars, dentistry cavitrons and MRI. This study is to investigate…

Alternating Magnetic Field Generation and Interaction with Magnetic Polyelectrolyte Microcapsules.

Layer-by-Layer (LbL) microcapsules with iron oxide nanoparticles facilitate smart drug delivery in the presence of an alternating magnetic field. A high-frequency alternating magnetic field (AMF) has been commonly used to induce hyperthermia for killing tumor tissues. This technique, however, could harm normal tissues. To achieve a safe drug delivery approach, we fabricate and test a device producing a low-frequency alternating magnetic field to interact with magnetic LbL capsules and induce smart release. The nanoparticles act as a vehicle that can be used to guide the microcapsule to targete

Experimental Evidence for Coronal Mass Ejection Suppression in Strong Stellar Magnetic Fields.

Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are routinely observed, but as of yet there exist few convincing detections of stellar CMEs. A reason for this could be that the stronger magnetic fields of these stars, compared to that of our Sun, would prevent CME to form and escape. Here we combined astrophysical simulations, measurements of scaled high-energy laser-driven plasma flows, and 3D magnetohydrodynamic modeling to test this hypothesis. Simulations show that, in a 100 G stellar dipole field, low-plasma β CMEs become magnetically confined. In the laboratory, a laser-produced plasma stream scaled…

Static magnetic fields unlock extensive microbial-catalyzed dechlorination and partial anaerobic mineralization.

Anaerobic microbial dechlorination of chlorinated aromatic compounds is constrained by slow electron transfer and the accumulation of toxic intermediate, which hindered its practical deployment in contaminated water. Here, a static magnetic field (SMF)-based strategy was developed to overcome these bottlenecks using 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) as the target compound. A SMF-based system integrating SMF (50 mT), humin (2.0 g/L) mainly as an electron shuttle, and low dosage sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI, 0.04 g/L) as a supplementary electron donor achieved rapid and complete

The Effects of Moderate to High Static Magnetic Fields on Pancreatic Damage.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic damage is a common digestive system disease with no specific drugs. Static magnetic field (SMF), the key component of … aims to evaluate the safety and potential therapeutic effects of moderate- to high-intensity static magnetic fields (SMFs) on mice with pancreatic injury. Their findings revealed that SMFs between 1.5 and 7 Tesla (T) helped reduce alcohol-induced pancreatic damage, while a stronger 9.4 T showed no effect. Interestingly, for mice with L-arginine-induced acute panc …

Effects of 3.5-23.0 T static magnetic fields on mice: A safety study.

People are exposed to various magnetic fields, including the high static/steady magnetic field (SMF) of MRI, which has been increased to 9.4 T in preclinical investigations. However, relevant safety studies about high SMF are deficient. Here we examined whether 3.5-23.0 T SMF exposure for 2 h has severe long-term effects on mice using 112 C57BL/6J mice. The food/water consumption, blood glucose levels, blood routine, blood biochemistry, as well as organ weight and HE stains were all examined. The food consumption and body weight were slightly decreased for 23.0 T-exposed mice (14.6%, P < 0.01,…

Effects of combined magnetic fields on bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum VKM B-1621.

Bacteria are the simplest model of living organisms and thus are a convenient object for magnetobiological research. This paper describes some effects of combined magnetic fields (CMFs) on the bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum strain VKM B-1621, which is not a pathogen but was selected due to its wide spectrum of growth abilities. The authors chose magnetic field-resonant phosphorus and iron (Fe3+ ) because P-containing biochemical compounds (standard abbreviations PP1 , AMP, ADP, ATP) provide energy flows in bacteria while iron could take part in formation of magnetosensitive intracellular incl…

Effects of intermediate frequency magnetic fields on male fertility indicators in mice.

Human exposure to intermediate frequency (IF) fields is increasing due to new applications such as electronic article surveillance systems, wireless power transfer and induction heating cookers. However, limited data is available on effects of IF magnetic fields (MF) on male fertility function. This study was conducted to assess possible effects on fertility indicators from exposure to IF MF. Male C57BL/6J mice were exposed continuously for 5 weeks to 7.5kHz MF at 12 and 120μT. Sperm cells from cauda epididymis were analysed for motility, total sperm counts, and head abnormalities. Motile sper…

Do magnetic fields cause increased risk of childhood leukemia via melatonin disruption?

Epidemiological studies have reported associations between exposure to power frequency magnetic fields and increased risk of certain cancer and noncancer illnesses. For childhood leukemia, a doubling of risk has been associated with exposures above 0.3/0.4 microT. Here, we propose that the melatonin hypothesis, in which power frequency magnetic fields suppress the nocturnal production of melatonin in the pineal gland, accounts for the observed increased risk of childhood leukemia. Such melatonin disruption has been shown in animals, especially with exposure to electric and/or rapid on/off magn…

Nocturnal 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate excretion in female workers exposed to magnetic fields.

The objective of this study was to determine whether daytime occupational exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields (MFs) suppresses nocturnal melatonin production. Sixty female volunteers were recruited. Thirty-nine worked in a garment factory, and 21 office workers served as a reference group. Exposure assessment was based on the type of sewing machine used and MF measurements around each type of machine. Eye-level MF flux density was used to classify the operators to higher (>1 microT) and lower (0.3-1 microT) exposure categories. A third group of factory workers had diverse MF ex…

Powerline frequency electric and magnetic fields: a pilot study of risk perception.

The perception of the potential risk arising from human exposure to 50/60 Hz electric and magnetic fields was studied with a quasi-random sample of 116 well-educated, opinion leaders using the risk perception framework previously developed by Slovic, Fischhoff, and Lichtenstein. These individuals rated exposure to fields from transmission lines and electric blankets on a variety of scales that have been found useful in characterizing people's risk attitudes and perceptions. These judgments allowed us to conjecture about the likely desire for regulation of these potential hazards and the likely…

Children and adults exposed to low-frequency magnetic fields at the ICNIRP reference levels: theoretical assessment of the induced electric fields.

To avoid potentially adverse health effects, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has defined reference levels for time varying magnetic fields. Restrictions on the electric fields induced in the human body are provided based on biological response data for peripheral nerve stimulation and the induction of phosphenes. Numerical modeling is commonly used to assess the induced electric fields for various exposure configurations. The objective of this study was to assess the variations of the electric fields induced in children and adults and to compare the e…

Acute effects of whole-body exposure to static magnetic fields and 50-Hz electromagnetic fields on muscle microcirculation in anesthetized mice.

Acute microhemodynamic effects of static and alternating magnetic fields at a threshold level were investigated on modulating the muscle capillary mirocirculation in pentobarbital-anesthetized mice. The skin in a tibialis anterior was circularly removed with 1.5 mm diameter for intravital-microscopic recording of the capillary blood velocity in the tibialis anterior muscle. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextran (MW 150 kDa) was used for an in vivo fluorescent plasma marker of the muscle capillaries. Following a bolus injection of FITC-dextran solution into the caudal vein, the peak…

Helfrich walls in nematic toroidal droplets in the presence of magnetic fields.

We observe the formation of stable, magnetic field induced, alignment inversion walls, also called Helfrich walls, in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) confined to a toroidal droplet with tangential anchoring at the boundaries. Walls are rare in NLCs due to their high energy compared to lower-dimensional defect structures. However, we find that Helfrich walls naturally form, transform, and migrate in this unconventional toroidal setting, generating intricate director-field configurations due to the interplay of confining geometry and external fields. Interestingly, the presence and number of poin

Do Magnetic Fields Have a Place in Treating Vascular Complications in Diabetes?

The use of electromagnetic field therapy (EMFT) is a non-invasive, potential alternative or complementary choice in the treatment of wounds, chronic pain, neuropathy, and other medical conditions, including tissue repair and cell proliferation. Static magnetic fields (SMFs) have been reported to increase microcirculatory blood flow by mediating vasodilation via nitric oxide. Studies report that SMF exposure causes homeostatic, normalizing effects on the vascular tone that may have beneficial effects in situations where tissue perfusion is limited, such as may be present in diabetes. Pulsed ele…

A short review on the influence of magnetic fields on neurological diseases.

This study reviews the use of magnetic and electromagnetic fields (EMF), pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD), or Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The Introduction provides a review of EMF, PEMF, and TMS based on clinical observations. This is followed by a description of the basic principles of these treatments and a literature review on possible mechanisms describing the coupling of these treatments with biological responses. These response mechanisms include the cell membrane and its embedded receptors, ch…

Extremely Low-Frequency Magnetic Fields Exposure Measurement during Lessons in Elementary Schools.

Schools are an important place for children's exposure to electromagnetic fields, which may cause adverse health effects. To better understand environmental extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) exposure among elementary school students, we measured numeric values of ELF-MFs in five classrooms at four schools during digital learning class hours. The measurement of ELF-MFs was taken with an EMDEX II field analyzer. Specifically, we examined the level of exposure to ELF-MFs for each student's seating position in the classroom. The results showed that ELF-MFs exposure levels were lowe…

Clarifying the mechanism of reverse structuring during electrodeposition in magnetic gradient fields.

Deviating from the common expectation, magnetoelectrochemical structuring during deposition of diamagnetic ions was demonstrated, very recently. To achieve this, electrochemically inert paramagnetic ions have to be added to the electrolyte and the deposition has to be performed in a magnetic gradient field. A reverse structuring occurs, yielding thinner deposits near high gradient regions. In this paper we aim to clarify the mechanism of this reverse structuring. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic investigations were performed, including measurements of the deposited mass with an electrochemic
