Aspergillus fumigatus--a ubiquitous foe.

Aspergillus, a fungus whose spores are ubiquitous in the environment, and are normally found in air, can be a significant issue in healthcare premises, and especially in hospital ventilation systems. Here Andrew Poplett, an engineer with over 28 years' healthcare building services engineering experience, and an Authorised Engineer for both specialist ventilation and water quality, explains its occurrence, spread, and prevalence. He discusses how estates and facilities personnel, in conjunction with their clinical and infection control counterparts, can act to control and manage Aspergillus, an

Proper training key to defeating Legionella.

The long-awaited report from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) into the Barrow Legionella outbreak has now been published and is in the public domain. Its conclusions and recommendations clearly recognise that the outbreak cannot, and should not, be attributed purely to one group or to the individuals working within one department. Moreover, the failings which contributed to the outbreak stretched from the lowest levels to the top of the council organisation. Develop Training's Tony Green explains how correct training can prevent future outbreaks.

Standards of performance for new stationary sources and emission guidelines for existing sources: hospital/medical/infectious waste incinerators--EPA. Final rule.

This action promulgates new source performance standards (NSPS or standards) and emission guidelines (EG or guidelines) to reduce air emissions from hospital/medical/infectious waste incinerator(s) (HMIWI) by adding subpart Ec, standards of performance for new HMIWI, and subpart Ce, emission guidelines for existing HMIWI, to 40 CFR part 60. The standards and guidelines implement sections 111 and 129 of the Clean Air Act (CAA) as amended in 1990. The standards and guidelines apply to units whose primary purpose is the combustion of hospital waste and/or medical/infectious waste. Sources are req

Facility issues of the 1990s.

In the 1980s there was overbuilding of facilities of all kinds, including facilities with acute psychiatric beds. A subsequent decrease in patient days in most of these hospitals caused significant excess capacity. With all the problems now confronting mental healthcare facilities, it may be difficult to focus attention on hospital buildings; however, intelligent planning for the use of these large investments may be part of an overall solution. An awareness of problems facing our facility managers should enhance the planning process and minimize unwanted surprises.

Monitoring of hospital water supplies for Legionella.

In order to determine the value of regular surveillance for Legionella in the prevention of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) legionellosis, water samples were obtained over a three-year period from 17 hospitals located in England and Scotland. Prior to the study, all of the hospitals had in operation defined protocols and maintenance schedules which followed national guidelines for the prevention of legionellosis in health care premises. Six samples, from key locations in the water system of each hospital, were taken at six-monthly intervals. Total viable bacterial count (TVC), coliform count an

Digital subtraction angiography in the community hospital.

Although digital angiography may involve the same physician processes in the university as in the community hospital, it can be seen that the indications, approaches, and utility of DSA are somewhat different in the two environments. DSA is presently in a state of change, in part because of the maturing of other modalities and also because of the present emphasis on cost-saving in medical imaging. As referring physicians become used to digital arteriographic images, more and more procedures will be performed with DSA. We believe the DSA will have an important role in the community hospital for

How to deal with a hospital outbreak of Legionnaires' disease.

The outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Glasgow Royal Infirmary is discussed together with the problems such an outbreak poses to the microbiologist. The importance of early diagnosis is stressed. The outbreak was managed by a team drawn up from various disciplines within the hospital. Frank daily reports to the press, together with regular staff meetings with staff representatives helped to allay public anxiety. The subsequent maintenance and monitoring of the wet cooling tower required for the hospital ventilation system have resulted in considerable additional work for the microbiology dep

Assessment of Occupational Health Risks Among Non-Medical Hospital Personnel: A Cross-Sectional Study in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand.

Hospitals are complex organizations where personnel are exposed to diverse occupational hazards. While medical staff are often the focus, non-medical support personnel such as maintenance, laundry, and nutrition staff face significant health risks due to their specific work environments. This study aimed to assess occupational health hazards and health risks among medical support personnel in a community hospital in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand, to propose effective control measures. This study aimed to assess occupational health hazards and health risks among medical support personnel wor
