Drug absorption in gastrointestinal disease with particular reference to malabsorption syndromes.

There is a considerable range in the dose of many drugs that is required to produce a given pharmacological effect in an individual patient. This individual variation in dose requirement is sometimes reflected in the wide scatter in the steady state plasma concentration that follows the same oral dose of a drug given to any group of subjects. Such individual differences are largely due to variation in the rate of elimination of drugs. Gastrointestinal disease may also alter oral dose requirements by producing variation in both the amount and rate of drug absorption. These changes may be reflec

Carbohydrate malabsorption syndromes and early signs of mental depression in females.

Fructose and lactose malabsorption are characterized by impaired duodenal fructose transport or by the deficiency of mucosal lactase, respectively. As a consequence, the nonabsorbed saccharides reach the colon, where they are broken down by bacteria to short fatty acids, CO2, and H2. Bloating, cramps, osmotic diarrhea, and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are the consequence and can be seen in about 50% of carbohydrate malabsorbers. We have previously shown that fructose as well as lactose malabsorption were associated with signs of mental depression. It was therefore of interest to

Plasma and urinary zinc in patients with malabsorption syndromes or hepatic cirrhosis.

Plasma and urinary zinc have been measured in 19 patients with malabsorption and 21 patients with hepatic cirrhosis. The results have been compared with those of 20 control subjects and 23 patients with a variety of other diseases. The diurnal variation in plasma zinc levels has been confirmed and is of such magnitude that this must be taken into account in comparing results in groups of subjects. Plasma zinc levels, both fasting and after a meal, are significantly lower in patients with cirrhosis (71 and 60 mug/100 ml) and malabsorption (76 and 64 mug/100 ml) than in controls (97 and 81 mug/1

[Usefulness and limitations of edema of the small intestine in malabsorption syndromes].

Malabsorption syndrome is a clinical condition that can be determined by several situations which can ensue by many etiopathogenetic mechanisms. While the diagnostic approach is, for this reason, complex and uses a lot of clinical, laboratory and instrumental techniques, the therapeutic approach could be surgical or medical. The aim of our research is to establish the diagnostic utility of the radiologic examination of the small intestine by enteroclysis, on the basis of our personal experience and the data referred in literature. We took particular care of the radiological study of primitive

[Assessment of a digestive malabsorption syndrome].

Malabsorption syndrome is a complex clinical entity that needs to be carefully explored. Patients present frequently chronic diarrhoea associated with weight loss. These symptoms affect patient's quality of life. The assessment of this syndrome requires a detailed anamnesis, a careful clinical exam, the use of biological measurements in both blood and faeces, and, if necessary, other more complex investigations including radionuclide tests. It is important to find the right pathogenesis in order to start effective treatments if possible. First, there are classical bowel pathologies like celiac

[Cutaneous manifestations of the malabsorption syndrome].

A review of the skin changes in malabsorption syndrome, is presented; dividing the symptoms in skin, mucous membranes and adnexal involvement. In this way, acquired ichtyosis, hiperpigmentation changes, purpura and echimosis and eczematoid or psoriatic-like with generalized pruritus are described. The mucous membranes alterations are the most frequent ones, the angular cheilitis, glositis, ulcerations and aphthaes are pointed out, as well as the changes in the shape and colour of hair and nail abnormalities. Special mention deserve the particular cases of malabsorption syndromes that appears i…

[Malabsorption syndrome and intestinal parasitosis].

In Dakar, through histopathological biopsies, the author looked for duodenal alterations in four parasitosis: giardiasis, strongyloidiasis, hookworms and ascaridiosis. He gives an overall survey on malabsorption in relation with intestinal parasitosis, including intestinal capillariosis and coccidiosis. He recalls basic concepts concerning each of these parasitic diseases, with a special mention to mucosal invasion and endogenous self reinfection during some parasitosis; he also emphasizes the importance of some diagnosis techniques (such as examination of duodenal fluid in relation to giardia
