[Malnutrition aspects of South Mali farmers (author's transl)].

The results of a nutritional survey with two passages performed in July-August 1978 and March-April 1979 by ORANA in South Mali are presented: mild or moderate protein-energy malnutrition, anemia and specific deficiencies are everywhere present, but the situation deteriorates quickly from a season to the other and it is possible to characterize ecological, economic or cultural situations where nutritional status of the populations is worse than other. Among them the current economic modifications which are accompanied by nutritional modifications were emphasized as the need to consider this as

[Turner syndrome in the hôpital du Mali, a case].

Turner syndrome is a chromosomal aberration linked to the complete or partial absence of an X chromosome. Its prevalence is 1/2500 female newborns. We report a case in the department of internal medicine and endocrinology of the hospital of MALI. This was a 14-year old girl who consulted for stunting and puberty. She presented clinically a dysmorphic syndrome, TANNER stage1 secondary sexual characteristics, weight and height at -3 DS and a bone age estimated to 9½ years old on the X-ray of the hand. The hormonal assessment showed an elevation of FSH and LH and the genetic study showed an iso c

[Evaluation of rational prescribing and dispensing of medicines in Mali].

Pharmaceutical policy in Mali is based on the concept of essential medicines and procurement of generic medicines. Unfortunately, increasing availability of generic medicines via different promotional programs can often be accompanied by their irrational use. This survey was thus designed to evaluate rational prescribing and dispensing of medicines in Mali. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 1998 to 2005 in 30 primary health centers and 30 private dispensaries; in Bamako and in 6 of the 8 other regions of the country. In each of the visited facilities, 20 prescriptions dispensed at th

Ocular lesions associated with malaria in children in Mali.

This study sought to estimate the frequency of ocular complications in malaria and its prognostic value in Mali. A total of 140 children (aged 6 months to 9 years) with severe malaria (105 with cerebral malaria, 35 without neurological complications) were compared with 34 children with mild malaria and 82 children with nonmalarial fever. Ocular lesions were rare in the mild malaria group (5.8%). Retinal hemorrhages occurred in 11.8% of the children in the severe noncerebral malaria group. Cerebral malaria was associated with retinal hemorrhages (22.9%) and retinal edema (10.5%). No association

[Acanthamoeba keratitis: search for a healthy carrier in Mali].

The first cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis in Africa were reported in 1990 at the Institute of African Tropical Ophthalmology (IOTA) in Bamako, Mali. From 1990 to 1995, a total of 22 cases of corneal ulcers involving Acanthamoeba sp. were diagnosed at the IOTA. To improve our understanding of the epidemiological characteristics of these lesions in tropical areas, we attempted to identify healthy carriers of Acanthamoeba sp. by studying the normal eye flora of 149 patients examined at the IOTA in February 1996. Acanthamoeba sp. was not detected in any sample. Fungi were detected in 22.15 p. 100

[Cartography of trachoma in Mali: results of a national survey].

Prior to a campaign to eliminate blinding trachoma, a survey of the prevalence of the disease was conducted in the seven administrative regions of Mali between March 1996 and June 1997. In each region (with the exception of Bamako District) a random sample of thirty clusters was taken from the general population, in accordance with the principle of probability proportionate to the size of the communities. All children under 10 years of age and all women over 14 years were examined. The simplified coding proposed by WHO was used for data gathering. A total of 15,310 children and 11,530 women we

Mycetomas in Mali: causative agents and geographic distribution.

Although Mali is situated in the African zone endemic for mycetomas, no report has been published on the characteristics of the disease in this country. We report a series of 54 cases observed in Bamako. The causative agents were Madurella mycetomatis in 20 patients, Leptosphaeria sp. in one patients, Actinomadura madurae in 12 patients, A. pelletieri in 15 patients, and Streptomyces somaliensis in three patients. In this series, the observed geographic distribution of the causative agents was in agreement with data on the causative agents and their geographic distribution in neighboring count

[Hemoglobin C in a hospital milieu in Bamako (Mali)].

An hospital survey, performed in Bamako (Mali, West Africa) showed 7.5% haemoglobin AC, 0.4% haemoglobin CC, 1.6% haemoglobin SC and 0.2% haemoglobin CA (haemoglobin C-beta+thalassaemia). Haemoglobin C was mostly prevalent among Bobo, Mossi, Senoufo, Minianka and Dogon coming from the Southern border of Mali. Haemoglobin SC and to a lesser extent haemoglobins CC and CA often induce haemolysis and vasoocclusion. Microcytosis is common, even in the absence of anaemia.

Human Herpesvirus 8 seroprevalence among blood donors in Mali.

In sub-Saharan Africa, the Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is endemic but with disparities between regions and population studied. Although the virus remains mostly latent, there is some evidence that blood transfusion may represents one of the transmission way for this virus. Here, we evaluated HHV-8 seroprevalence among blood donors in Mali. This cross-sectional study recruited blood donors from the Blood Transfusion Center at Gabriel Touré Hospital, Bamako. Serum was used for the detection of latent HHV-8 immunoglobulin G directed against latent associated nuclear antigen 1 by an indirect immun

Annual Incidence of Lassa Virus Infection in Southern Mali.

AbstractPreviously, we reported a high seroprevalence rate of Lassa virus antibodies in inhabitants of three villages in southern Mali where infected rodents have been demonstrated. Herein, we report a 1-year follow-up study in which we were able to collect a second blood samples from 88.7% of participants of the same cohort. We identified 23 seroconversions for IgG antibodies reactive against Lassa virus, representing an incidence of 6.3% (95% confidence interval = 3.8-8.8%). Seroconversion was frequently seen in preteenage children (12/23, 51.7%) and two household/familial clusters were iden
