Questionable 'Good Faith' Reporting: A Study of Web-Based Abuse Reporting in the Canadian Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church provides a fruitful contextual basis for assessing good faith reporting of child sexual abuse. Drawing on the literature of organizational decoupling and organizational misconduct reporting, content analysis of recently implemented web-based reporting mechanisms and safeguarding policies of 30 Catholic dioceses across Canada was used to study misconduct and abuse reporting practices in this institution. Our findings provide evidence of gaps and inconsistencies with regard to accessibility and visibility in reporting mechanisms and corresponding communications on dioce

Notes from the field: Increase in reported legionellosis - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June-September 2013.

In early July 2013, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) was notified by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health of an increase in reported cases of legionellosis in southeastern Wisconsin. Legionellosis is a reportable disease to state and local public health authorities in Wisconsin. During June 1-September 30, 2013, a total of 58 clinically diagnosed cases of Legionnaires' disease, confirmed by laboratory testing, were reported in Milwaukee County, more than twice the number of total annual case reports in each of the previous 5 years. Forty-five (78%) of these cases were reported

Recent trends in sexually transmitted infections among adolescents, Catalonia, Spain, 2012-2017.

Monitoring sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents is essential to inform STI prevention strategies at primary and secondary levels in this key population. We aim to describe recent trends in STIs among adolescents and to analyse their socio-demographic and behavioural characteristics in Catalonia, Spain between 2012 and 2017. Data on Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection, gonorrhoea and syphilis cases aged from 13 to 19 years reported to the Catalan Mandatory Notifiable System from 2012 to 2017 were analysed. Diagnosis rates were calculated and a descriptive analysis was performe

Voluntary and mandatory surveillance for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) bacteraemia in England.

Voluntary laboratory reporting of communicable disease, including bacteraemia, has been the mainstay of surveillance in England for >30 years. The impact of introducing a parallel mandatory reporting process for surveillance of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia [both methicillin susceptible (MSSA) and resistant (MRSA)] was assessed by national and regional comparison of MSSA and MRSA reports to the two surveillance systems. Introduction of mandatory reporting in 2001 demonstrated that the true number of cases was 40% higher than indicated by voluntary reporting (i.e. 60% case ascertainment by …

Elder abuse.

Five types of elder abuse (physical, psychological, sexual, neglect and financial) are recognized. They are not new, occur worldwide and are associated with persistent morbidity and mortality. The forensic clinician has responsibilities to: (i) the patient, with competent history taking and examination, (ii) interpret findings and recognize patterns of harm and (iii) promulgate this issue in wider professional and public forums. Research into elder abuse is relatively recent; standardized terminology remains unsettled, and small-scale, local studies are hard to generalize. Cross-sectional, pop

Barriers to physician identification and reporting of child abuse.

Physicians systematically underidentify and underreport cases of child abuse. These medical errors may result in continued abuse, leading to potentially severe consequences. We have reviewed a number of studies that attempt to explain the reasons for these errors. The findings of these various studies suggest several priorities for improving the identification and reporting of child maltreatment: Improve continuing education about child maltreatment. Continuing education should focus not only on the identification of maltreatment but also on management and outcomes. This education should inclu

Recommendations for surveillance priorities for healthcare-associated infections and criteria for their conduct.

Surveillance and feedback of results to clinical teams is central to performance improvement in managing healthcare-acquired infections. A major role of the Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (ARHAI) is to advise on surveillance priorities. A sub-committee was set up to systematically review existing UK surveillance schemes. The following three systems were examined in detail: mandatory reporting of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia and Clostridium difficile infection to the HPA; surveillance of surgical site infecti…

Nonaccidental trauma in children: the pediatrician's role in recognition, reporting, and prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nonaccidental trauma remains a significant and underrecognized contributor to pediatric injury and mortality, reflecting both clinical and societal challenges in prevention and early identification. This review aims to synthesize the most recent literature on pediatric nonaccidental trauma (NAT) to better equip members of the healthcare team, particularly those in direct patient care, such as physicians, with the insight, contextual awareness, and ethical vigilance needed to identify, manage, and intervene in cases of child maltreatment. In doing so, it highlights the critic

Clinical recognition of elder maltreatment and intention to report among primary care doctors.

This study aimed to determine the primary care doctors' ability to recognize elder maltreatment and their intentions to report on such conditions. About 358 primary care doctors participated in this study. Outcomes were assessed using a validated five context-relevant clinical vignettes. Primary care doctor's recognition of sexual abuse was highest (91.0%); while the lowest (70.2%) in case signifying physical abuse. Despite being able to ascertain elder maltreatment, the intention to report the event is generally low even for cases exemplifying physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. Howe

Educating Australia's Jewish Communities about Child Sexual Abuse.

It has been claimed that effective responses to child sexual abuse (CSA) must engage with the specific cultural, social, and religious contexts of the target communities. For Jewish communities in Australia, the program J-Safe was established to raise awareness, create cultural change, and empower the Jewish community to be able to prevent, recognize, and address child sexual assault within the school setting. This paper reports on the experiences of teachers in two Jewish-day schools who had participated in the J-Safe Project's protective behaviors teacher training program. Participants' acco

[Perforation of the eardrum caused by child abuse].

Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) is a complex, multifaceted form of child abuse that presents a challenge to all health-care providers. Diagnosis is difficult in cases of MSBP, and it is imperative to recognise the clinical features of MSBP in both the child and the perpetrator. All members of the health-care team must stay objective in the interactions with families where MSBP is suspected and make referrals to the proper agencies. A case is presented to explain the medical and social complexities associated with nursing and diagnosing MSBP. This article also provides a brief review of the

Sexual Abuse in Correctional Facilities.

This review provides an overview of sexual abuse in correctional facilities, including victimization rates, reporting rates, common victims and offenders, and prevention efforts RECENT FINDINGS: There is disagreement about the cause of rape and sexual assault among men and women who are incarcerated. Some explanations argue that it is a manifestation of power and control while others argue it is a result of deprivation. Research has not isolated one specific explanation. Women tend to be victimized by correctional officers and people who are transgender are often victimized by other incarcerat

Child protection training for professionals to improve reporting of child abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Many nations require child-serving professionals to report known or suspected cases of significant child abuse and neglect to statutory child protection or safeguarding authorities. Considered globally, there are millions of professionals who fulfil these roles, and many more who will do so in future. Ensuring they are trained in reporting child abuse and neglect is a key priority for nations and organisations if efforts to address violence against children are to succeed. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of training aimed at improving reporting of child abuse and neglect b

'Cold feet': The attrition of historic child sexual abuse cases reported to the police in a Northern Canadian Territory.

BACKGROUND: Most previous sexual assault attrition research has not differentiated between cases reported promptly and non-recent (or historic) reports, obscuring differences in attrition patterns. Historic child sexual abuse [HCSA] presents challenges for investigation and prosecution, including a lack of physical evidence, and complainant and witness memory issues. OBJECTIVE: To determine attrition patterns and analyze complainant reasons for withdrawal in HCSA cases in a region with a large Indigenous population. SAMPLE AND SETTING: This study examined 231 non-institutional HCSA complaint

Twice Silenced: The Underreporting of Child Sexual Abuse in Orthodox Jewish Communities.

Child sexual abuse remains an underreported crime throughout the world, despite extensive research and resources dedicated both to improving investigative techniques and helping children disclose their experiences. The discovery of rampant cover-ups within the Catholic Church has exposed some of the ways religious and cultural issues can impede reporting to authorities. This article examines specific factors that contribute to the underreporting of child sexual abuse within Orthodox Jewish communities. It also explores ways in which these communities have handled child sexual abuse reporting i
