BACKGROUND: We retrospectively reviewed patients who were treated and followed-up for mandibular fractures within a 10-year period.
METHODS: A total of 204 patients (158 males, 46 females; mean age 22.4 years; range 5 to 72 years) were retrospectively evaluated with respect to age groups, sex, etiology, associated injuries, localization and type of the fractures, treatment methods, and early and late complications. The follow-up period ranged from four months to 10 years.
RESULTS: The most common cause of injury was traffic accidents (44.1%), followed by falling (31.8%), and violence (17.1%)…

The authors analyze the results of treatment of 60 patients with mandibular fractures, in whose treatment an improved V. V. Donskoĭ's method was used. Types of mandibular fractures are described, as are methods of treatment. The results were encouraging. No complications were recorded in the postoperative period. The authors claim that the modified method they used is simple, physiologic, sufficiently well fixes the bone fragments, and creates good conditions for reparative osteogenesis, and can therefore be recommended for wide practice.

The use of transoral noncompression unicortical miniplates in treating 42 consecutive patients with 64 displaced mandibular fractures (excluding subcondylar) was reviewed. Titanium miniplates (Wurzburg) were used for fixation. The principles set forth by Champy and colleagues, with two plates for body and symphyseal fracture fixation and one plate superiorly along the oblique ridge for angle fractures, were performed. Intermaxillary fixation was not used postoperatively. Results compared favorably with other forms of treatment with no evidence of postoperative malocclusion, with an overall com…

Noncompression monocortical miniplate fixation of mandibular fractures has become a reliable method of providing rigid fixation and eliminating the need for intermaxillary fixation. Recent studies, using a variety of internal fixation techniques, have described high complication rates at the mandibular angle. This article compares the use of one miniplate vs two miniplates in treatment of angle fractures. Since September 1985, 61 patients with 63 mandibular angle fractures have been treated with miniplates. Forty-four fractures were fixed with two miniplates. Six complications (3.1%) occurred,…

In a group of 1246 patients treated in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery-Institute of Stomatology, Medical Academy in Warsaw, in a period of 3 years (1984-1986) late results of treatment of mandibular fractures were assessed. In the assessment the range of mandible abduction, function of temporomandibular joints, occlusal abnormalities, the sensory function in the area innervated by the mental nerves and the condition of posttraumatic scars changing the morphology and aesthetic appearance of the face were considered. Limitation of mandibular abduction after treatment was found in 39 case…

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are a major component of maxillofacial trauma due to the prominent anatomical position in facial skeleton. Their prevalence, etiology, and injury patterns vary across age groups and are influenced by environmental and geographical factors. This study aims to analyze clinical, demographic profile and pattern of mandibular fractures presenting over a period of 5 years in a tertiary institute.
METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted over a 5-year period from hospital record of National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepa…

A school-aged child presented to the department with a history of a fall while playing. Facial swelling with restricted mouth opening was evident, suspecting a bilateral mandibular body fracture. CT showed bilateral fracture of the body of the mandible. The case report illustrates the management of bilateral mandibular body fractures through a non-invasive approach.

PURPOSE: To clarify reasons for infections, surgical techniques, and occurrence of postoperative surgical site complications in infected mandibular fractures.
METHODS: Patients with clinically infected mandibular fracture of the dentate part without preceding surgery were studied retrospectively. Clinical infection was defined to occur if pus, abscess, or a fistula in the fracture area was present. Patient-, fracture-, and surgery-related variables were evaluated, and predictors for postoperative complications were analysed.
RESULTS: Of 908 patients with surgically treated fracture in the de…

PURPOSE: To investigate a predisposition to mandibular angle fractures, a retrospective study was performed in which fractured mandibles were compared with healthy mandibles with no history of fracture. Other investigations of angle fracture risk have exclusively studied patients with existing fractures. In addition, the risk has not been comprehensively explained in conjunction with the specific features of mandibular anatomy. We sought to characterize any anatomic variations between the jaws that had fractured and those that had never fractured.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy mandibles with

PURPOSE: Despite the frequency of condylar fractures, no consensus has been reached regarding treatment alternatives (ie, operative vs nonoperative). The purpose of the present study was to describe functional treatment without intermaxillary fixation of condylar fractures and summarize the treatment outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed a retrospective case series and enrolled patients with condylar fractures with malocclusion. The primary outcome was treatment success, assessed at the end of 6 weeks. We recorded 5 parameters to assess treatment success, including a stable return to th

The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate some epidemiological characteristics, surgical treatment methods, and complications of cases involving mandibular fractures. Records from 119 patients treated for mandibular fractures between January 2006 and December 2011 were analyzed. We find mandibular fractures mostly affect Caucasian (72.2%) men (80.7%). The mean age of the patients was 28.1 years. Road traffic accidents (RTA) caused the most fractures (49.5%), followed by physical violence, including gunshot wounds (21%). Motorcycle accidents were the most common cause of RTA (76…
