Marital status shows no protective effect on perioperative outcomes after robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy.

BACKGROUND: Marital status has been shown to have protective effects for married patients with various cancers. We sought to determine effects of marital status on perioperative outcomes after robotic-assisted pulmonary lobectomy (RAPL). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 709 consecutive patients who underwent RAPL between 2010 and 2022 by one surgeon. Patients were stratified by marital status at time of surgery. The Married group included married, domestically partnered, and co-habitating patients (N = 473). The Unmarried group included never married, divorced, and widowed individuals (N …

Marital Status Independently Predicts Mortality in Adult Patients with Craniopharyngioma: A SEER-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between marital status and overall survival (OS) in adult patients with craniopharyngioma has not been explored in depth. We aimed to elucidate the impact of marital status on the prognosis of craniopharyngioma patients excluding bias from baseline demographics and treatment. METHODS: We extracted 1539 patients diagnosed with craniopharyngioma between 2000 and 2019 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database and divided patients into 4 marital subgroups: married, single, divorced/separated, and widowed. Kaplan-Meier curves with a log-rank test we…

Investigating the Associations among Drug Dependents' Family Function and Exercise Attitudes: Marital Status Differences.

This paper examines: (1) The demographic characteristics of different marital statuses of drug dependents; (2) differences in exercise attitudes and family function by marital status; and (3) if family function factors correlated with exercise attitudes and if exercise attitude factors correlated with family function. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) revealed significant differences in drug dependents' exercise attitudes between married and single groups (p < 0.05) and the married and "other" groups (p < 0.01). Furthermore, we observed significant differences in drug dependents' fam…

Social Integration, Marital Status, and Ovarian Cancer Risk: A 20-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Low social integration and divorce/widowhood are chronic psychosocial stressors that may affect health. When assessed after cancer diagnosis, they have been associated with poorer survival, but their role in cancer development, particularly ovarian cancer (OvCA), is less understood. We investigated whether social integration and marital status were related to OvCA risk in a large population-based study. METHODS: Women from the Nurses' Health Study completed the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index and reported their marital status every 4 years starting in 1992 (N = 72,206), and were …

Marital Status and Problem Gambling Among Australian Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Loneliness.

Problem gambling rates in older adults have risen dramatically in recent years and require further investigation. Limited available research has suggested that social needs may motivate gambling and hence problem gambling in older adults. Un-partnered older adults may be at greater risk of problem gambling than those with a partner. The current study explored whether loneliness mediated the marital status-problem gambling relationship, and whether gender moderated the mediation model. It was hypothesised that the relationship between being un-partnered and higher levels of loneliness would be …

The Impact of Marital Status on 20-Year Participation Trajectories in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Social participation following spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with improved quality of life, but it may decline with age. While marital status supports greater social participation, the long-term impact as individuals age remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To identify the relationship of marital status with participation trajectories using 20 years of longitudinal data. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of 343 participants with SCI who completed a self-report assessment 5 times in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023. Conditional growth models were used to assess trajectories of…

The impact of marital status on gastric cancer-related prognosis: A propensity-score matched study.

Gastric cancer remains a leading gastrointestinal malignancy with persistently high incidence and poor prognosis. Marital status, an established proxy for social support, has been linked to survival in several solid tumors, yet its impact on gastric-cancer outcomes remains uncertain in large contemporary cohorts. The aim of this study was to quantify the association between marital status and cancer-specific and overall survival in patients with gastric cancer in a large, contemporary, population-based cohort, and to determine whether marital status serves as an an independent prognostic facto…

Impact of Gender and Marital Status on Door-to-Treatment (DTT) Time and Acute Stroke Outcome.

OBJECTIVES: Delays in acute stroke treatment lead to poor outcomes. Women can present with atypical stroke symptoms, are older at the time of stroke, and tend to be living alone, causing delays in pre-hospital diagnosis and seeking care. It is unclear if gender disparities in ED arrival and stroke assessment are compounded by gender differences after ED arrival. Therefore, we sought to identify if gender and marital status were associated with faster door-to-treatment (DTT) time. METHODS: Our single-center stroke database was queried for adults presenting to ED with acute stroke between Janua…

Education, marital status, and risk of hip fractures in older men and women: the CHANCES project.

UNLABELLED: The role of socioeconomic status in hip fracture incidence is unclear. In a diverse population of elderly, higher education was found to be associated with lower, whereas living alone, compared to being married/cohabiting, with higher hip fracture risk. Educational level and marital status may contribute to hip fracture risk. INTRODUCTION: The evidence on the association between socioeconomic status and hip fracture incidence is limited and inconsistent. We investigated the potential association of education and marital status with hip fracture incidence in older individuals from …

Influence of insurance and marital status on outcomes of adolescents and young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Although outcomes for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are worse when treated according to adult rather than pediatric protocols, one criticism is that this may be due to the emancipation of young adults. METHODS: Using case listing session of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 (1973-2010), we examined outcomes for AYA with ALL defined similar to Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) 10,403 criteria (age 18-30) predicated on marital and insurance status as surrogates for emancipation (limiting analysis to 2007-2010).
