The purpose of mass screening is to decrease the mortality rate of diseases which are fatal if advanced by detecting them at an early and curable stage. From this point of view, we describe here the present state of mass screening, its problems, and the future of mass screening for esophageal and gastric cancer in Japan. We have recently developed an immunoassay that can measure thyroxine rapidly and accurately in the eluate of 40 mul of dried blood spotted on filter paper at the fifth day of life. Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are caused by a deficiency in the enzymes needed to degrade glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the lysosome. The storage of GAGs leads to the involvement of several systems and even to the death of the patient. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of smear test in the fight against cervix uteri cancer in Senegal.
METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 1836 Pap smears performed in patients over 15 years during several screening campaigns in Senegal conducted between June 2010 and June 2012. We analyzed epidemiological data, pathological smears, and the proposed management.
RESULTS: In 69% of cases, the women were less than 45 years old. They were mostly multiparous and did not use contraceptive methods before. The smears were interpreted in 91.4% (n=1661) and were pathological in 5.2%

A total of 1,044 school children identified with hematuria and/or proteinuria during a mass school urine screening test were referred to ped … einuria. A school urine screening program can detect chronic renal disease in its early stage. When mass screening is used, the initial aggressive diagnostic procedures such as renal biopsy are not needed. BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of mass screening of infants for neuroblastoma, the incidence of neuroblastoma has increased in Japan. The reason for this increased incidence is the possible inclusion of many neuroblastomas that would have regressed spontaneously and would never have been detected clinically. Although there has been controversy about the early detection of prostate carcinoma by mass screening, we carried out an investigational study of such screening, using digital rectal examination (DRE) and serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination in Hokkaido, Japan. Mass screening for breast cancer has been carried out in 13 cities in Osaka Prefecture for the past 15 years. The screening method was inspection and palpation by the physician, and examination by mammography was performed for the women with abnormal findings as the second screening.
