Cavernous Hemangioma of the Mastoid Antrum.

Hemangioma is a common vascular neoplasm that arises in the head and neck regions but is rare in the petrous bone. We report the first case of a solitary cavernous hemangioma in the mastoid antrum. A 68-year-old woman visited our hospital with a complaint of tinnitus without any other symptoms. Tinnitus of the right ear occurred especially when the patient yawned or swallowed. Both tympanic membranes appeared normal on otoscopic examination. On pure-tone audiometry, mild hearing loss up to 25 dB was detected in the right ear. Temporal bone computed tomography revealed a 7.0 mm × 4.5 mm × 5 mm,…

Primary Liposarcoma with Cholesteatoma in Mastoid.

Liposarcoma is a soft tissue neoplasm that commonly develops in the lower extremities and rarely in the head and neck region. Herein, we report the case of a patient with primary liposarcoma that was detected in the mastoid antrum during staged tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma. The tumor adjacent to the attic cholesteatoma was resected completely, and the pathological diagnosis was that of myxoid-type liposarcoma. Because positron emission tomography after the surgery showed no signs of tumor remnants or systemic metastasis, a second-stage surgery was performed 8 months after the first surgery.…

Mastoid biofilm in chronic otitis media.

HYPOTHESIS: We designed a study to determine the role of mastoid mucosal biofilm in chronic otitis media (COM). BACKGROUND: Biofilm formation has been found in several chronic airway infections. COM is associated with chronic, recalcitrant infection of the mastoid mucosa, and surgery often is required. METHODS: COM patients were divided into 2 groups: one with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and one with cholesteatoma presence. All COM patients had mastoid involvement in a preoperative computed tomographic scan. The control group consisted of patients undergoing cochlear implantation…

Mastoid cholesteatoma: a result of metaplasia.

Cerebral white matter lesions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) consist of subcortical degeneration and ischaemic-hypoxic changes. Glial changes are intimately associated with the white matter lesions, and regressive changes in astrocytes and loss of oligodendroglial cells have been reported. We quantitatively compared glial changes including apoptosis and enhanced lysosomal activity in the frontal and temporal white matter by using terminal dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) and immunohistochemistry for glial markers, lysosomes and apoptosis-regulating proteins in non-familial AD brains. The degree of

Mastoid subperiosteal abscess management in children.

The management of a mastoid subperiosteal abscess has traditionally required mastoidectomy. With the improvement of antibiotic therapy current literature supports the treatment of uncomplicated acute mastoiditis with myringotomy and intravenous antibiotics. Treatment of a mastoid subperiosteal abscess with tympanostomy tube insertion, intravenous antibiotics, and postauricular incision and drainage of the abscess avoids the morbidity and potential complications of mastoid surgery in young children. Three patients diagnosed with a mastoid subperiosteal abscess were managed in this way. The outc…

Mastoid abscess: underlying disease and management.

Despite a reduction in the incidence, subperiosteal mastoid abscesses (MAs) are still seen today with significant potentials for morbidity and even mortality. I present a series of 19 patients, seen over a 5-year period, with particular emphasis on the underlying disease and management. Ten abscesses (52.6%) succeeded acute suppurative otitis media (AOM); and nine (47.4%) resulted from chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Eighty percent of those with AOM were younger than 10 years, whereas 77.8% of those with CSOM were older than 10 years. Fifty percent of the MAs that resulted from AOM ha…

Primary cysts of the mastoid process.

Two patients with primary mastoid cysts are presented. These examples stress the importance of regular follow-up of patients with chronic serous otitis media so that the complications or associated abnormalities may be treated early prior to extensive destructive erosion. The formation of these cysts may be due to changes brought about by chronic serous otitis media, or they may be of congenital origin with middle ear effusion as a sequela.

Performance of deep learning to detect mastoiditis using multiple conventional radiographs of mastoid.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of deep learning algorithm trained by single view (anterior-posterior (AP) or lateral view) with that trained by multiple views (both views together) in diagnosis of mastoiditis on mastoid series and compare the diagnostic performance between the algorithm and radiologists. METHODS: Total 9,988 mastoid series (AP and lateral views) were classified as normal or abnormal (mastoiditis) based on radiographic findings. Among them 792 image sets with temporal bone CT were classified as the gold standard test set and remaining sets w…

[A clinical study of acute mastoiditis and mastoid lesions associated with pediatric otitis media].

Increased otitis media rendering acute mastoiditis and mastoid lesions severe or intractable appear to be related to dominant drug-resistant strains and the dissemination of nursery school attendance. Acute mastoiditis involves middle-ear inflammation spreading to the antrum mastoideum and accompanied by subcutaneous abscess. This emergency condition risks progression to subperiosteal abscess and meningitis. Mastoid cavity opacity in computed tomography (CT) scan often occurs with recurrent or intractable otitis media similar to that with mastoiditis. Four of the 8 cases of mastoiditis we trea…

Application of symmetry evaluation to deep learning algorithm in detection of mastoiditis on mastoid radiographs.

As many human organs exist in pairs or have symmetric appearance and loss of symmetry may indicate pathology, symmetry evaluation on medical images is very important and has been routinely performed in diagnosis of diseases and pretreatment evaluation. Therefore, applying symmetry evaluation function to deep learning algorithms in interpreting medical images is essential, especially for the organs that have significant inter-individual variation but bilateral symmetry in a person, such as mastoid air cells. In this study, we developed a deep learning algorithm to detect bilateral mastoid abnor…

[Mastoid obliteration during last 5 years].

The article presents modern approaches to mastoid obliteration in cases of chronic purulent otitis media with cholesteatoma, published in peer-reviewed russian and foreign journals from 2017 to 2021. The review tells us about effect of mastoid cavity obliteration on reducing the recurrence of cholesteatoma, improving the quality of life of patients according to the results of international questionnaires and the effect of surgery on hearing in the long-term postoperative period. An analysis of the use of autologous and biocompatible materials in middle ear surgery is presented. Their safety an…

Unusual presentation of tubercular mastoid cyst.

Tuberculosis in the otomastoid compartment is extremely rare. The classical presentation of tuberculous otitis media includes chronic otorrhea, severe hearing loss irrespective of the disease, multiple perforations, and pale granulations in the middle ear cavity. However, most present with non-specific signs and symptoms making it a diagnostic dilemma. Here, we report a case that presented with a bony mastoid cyst which is the first case report to the best of our knowledge. A 12-year-old boy visited our center with a complaint of chronic ear discharge and hearing loss not improving with conven…
