Pheromone receptor of the globally invasive quarantine pest of the palm tree, the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).

Palm trees are of immense economic, sociocultural, touristic, and patrimonial significance all over the world, and date palm-related knowledge, traditions, and practices are now included in UNESCOs list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Of all the pests that infest these trees, the red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), is its primary enemy. The RPW is a category-1 quarantine insect pest that causes enormous economic losses in palm tree cultivation worldwide. The RPW synchronizes mass gathering on the palm tree for feeding and mating, regulated by a male-pro

Male age alone predicts paternity success under sperm competition when effects of age and past mating effort are experimentally separated.

Older males often perform poorly under post-copulatory sexual selection. It is unclear, however, whether reproductive senescence is because of male age itself or the accumulated costs of the higher lifetime mating effort that is usually associated with male age. To date, very few studies have accounted for mating history and sperm storage when testing the effect of male age on sperm traits, and none test how age and past mating history influence paternity success under sperm competition. Here, we experimentally manipulate male mating history to tease apart its effects from that of age on ejacu

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) consumption is associated with higher bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) tea consumption is higher in Argentina and other South American countries than those of coffee or tea (Camellia sinensis). The effects of Yerba Mate on bone health have not previously been explored. From a program for osteoporosis prevention and treatment, postmenopausal women who drank at least 1 L of Yerba Mate tea daily during 4 or more years (n=146) were identified, and matched by age and time since menopause with an equal number of women who did not drink Yerba Mate tea. Their bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA

Cryptococcus neoformans mating and virulence are regulated by the G-protein alpha subunit GPA1 and cAMP.

This study explores signal transduction pathways that function during mating and infection in the opportunistic, human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. The gene encoding a G-protein alpha subunit homolog, GPA1, was disrupted by homologous recombination. The gpa1 mutant strain was viable but exhibited a defect in mating in response to nitrogen starvation. Additionally, the gpa1 mutant strain failed to induce two well-established virulence factors-melanin synthesis, in response to glucose starvation; and capsule production, in response to iron limitation. As a consequence, virulence of t

Mutation of the regulator of G protein signaling Crg1 increases virulence in Cryptococcus neoformans.

The regulator of G protein signaling homolog Crg1 was found to be a key regulator of pheromone-responsive mating in the opportunistic human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. A mutation in the CRG1 gene has greatly increased virulence in the prevalently distributed MATalpha strains of the fungus. Mouse survival time was shortened by 40%, and the lethal dosage was 100-fold less than that of wild-type strains. In addition, the increased virulence of crg1 mutant strains was dependent on the transcription factor homolog Ste12alpha but not on the mitogen-activated protein kinase homolog Cpk1.

Mate-guarding success depends on male investment in a butterfly.

Males of many insects, including butterflies, produce mate-guarding devices, such as mating plugs, to prolong guarding and prevent future female matings in the male's absence. In a few butterflies, large external mate-guarding devices, that is, sphragides, occur. Gór et al. (Behaviour, 160, 2023 and 515-557) found conspicuously large size and morphological variation of mate-guarding devices within a single population of the potentially polyandrous Clouded Apollo (Parnassius mnemosyne, L.) butterfly. They termed the externally visible male-produced devices as Copulatory opening APpendices (CAP)

Endogenous corazonin signaling modulates the post-mating switch in behavior and physiology in females of the brown planthopper and Drosophila.

Mating in insects typically triggers a post-mating response (PMR) in females, characterized by reduced receptivity to re-mating and increased oviposition, which ensures numerous and viable offspring and male paternity. This PMR is induced by male seminal factors, such as sex peptide in Drosophila melanogaster, as well as intrinsic female signaling components. The latter signaling remains poorly understood in most insects, including the devastating rice pest, the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens. Here, we show that the neuropeptide corazonin (CRZ) and its receptor (CrzR) are critical

A polycystin-1 controls postcopulatory reproductive selection in mice.

Pkdrej, a member of the polycystin-1 gene family, is expressed only in the male germ line. Male mice that are homozygous for a targeted mutation in the Pkdrej allele (Pkdrej(tm/tm)) are fertile in unrestricted mating trials, but exhibit lower reproductive success when competing with wild-type males in sequential mating trials and in artificial insemination of mixed-sperm populations. Following mating, sperm from Pkdrej(tm/tm) mice require >2 h longer than those of wild-type males to be detected within the egg/cumulus complex in the oviduct. Sperm from mice of both genotypes are able to capacit

A chimeric homeodomain protein causes self-compatibility and constitutive sexual development in the mushroom Coprinus cinereus.

The A mating type genes of the mushroom Coprinus cinereus encode two classes of putative transcription factor with distinctive homeodomain motifs (HD1 and HD2). A successful mating brings together different allelic forms of these genes and this triggers part of a developmental sequence required for sexual reproduction. In this report we provide evidence that this developmental programme is promoted by a physical interaction between the two classes of homeodomain protein. Rare dominant mutations conferring self-compatibility map to the A locus and result in constitutive operation of the A-regul

Synchronous Induction and Microscopic Analysis of Hyphal Growth Using Laboratory Strain AB33.

In nature, hyphal growth of Ustilago maydis is strictly coupled to plant infection and initiated after mating of two genetically compatible yeast cells on the plant surface. Compatibility is defined by mating type loci: the biallelic a locus mediates recognition and fusion through a pheromone/receptor system, whereas the multiallelic b locus, encoding transcription factor subunits bEast (bE) and bWest (bW), establishes and maintains the dikaryotic hypha controlled via the assembly of compatible subunits into active heterodimers after plasmogamy. The laboratory strain AB33 enables a controlled

Semen Modulates the Expression of NGF, ABHD2, VCAN, and CTEN in the Reproductive Tract of Female Rabbits.

Semen changes the gene expression in endometrial and oviductal tissues modulating important processes for reproduction. We tested the hypothesis that mating and/or sperm-free seminal plasma deposition in the reproductive tract affect the expression of genes associated with sperm-lining epithelium interactions, ovulation, and pre-implantation effects (nerve growth factor, NGF; α/β hydrolase domain-containing protein 2, ABHD2; C-terminal tensin-like protein, CTEN or TNS4; and versican, VCAN) in the period 10-72 h post-mating. In Experiment 1, does (n = 9) were treated with gonadotropin-releasing

The LIN-29 transcription factor is required for proper morphogenesis of the Caenorhabditis elegans male tail.

The Caenorhabditis elegans gene lin-29 encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor that is required for hypodermal cell terminal differentiation and proper vulva morphogenesis. Here we demonstrate that lin-29 is also required in males for productive mating. We show that lin-29 males can perform the early mating behaviors including response to hermaphrodite contact and vulva location, but they do not perform the subsequent steps of vulva attachment via spicule insertion and sperm transfer. Consistent with this observation, we found that lin-29 mutant spicules are on average 43% shorter than wild

Role of high molecular weight seminal vesicle proteins in eliciting the uterine inflammatory response to semen in mice.

Mating evokes a characteristic pattern of molecular and cellular events in the rodent reproductive tract, including an infiltration of the endometrial stroma and uterine lumen with activated macrophages and granulocytes, which closely resembles a classic inflammatory response. Previous studies in mice indicate that these cellular changes are associated with, and are largely a consequence of, an upregulated synthesis and release of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) from the uterine epithelium in response to seminal fluid. The aim of this study was to investigate further

Predicting OCT2/MATEs-Mediated Drug Interactions in Healthy Volunteers and Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: Insights from Extended Clearance Concept, Endogenous Biomarkers, and In Vitro Inhibition Studies (Perspectives from the International Transporter Consortium).

Organic cation transporter (OCT) 2 and multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) transporters play significant roles in the renal secretion of organic cations and drug-drug interactions (DDIs). Recent in vitro studies indicate that the Ki values for OCT2 exhibit substrate dependency and increase in potency with pre-incubation. However, consensus is lacking on whether these factors should be considered in predicting in vivo inhibition. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic models, combined with the extended clearance concept, have been used and are discussed here for OCT2/MATEs probes. In addition t

Luteal contribution to the termination of preimplantation delay in mink.

Five groups of mink were mated once between March 17-19 (Day O), Group 1, designated intact controls, received no further treatment. The remaining four groups of mink underwent unilateral ovariectomy on the day following mating. At that time, preovulatory follicles were transplanted to the ipsilateral kidney capsule of two groups (3 and 5) to become ectopic corpora lutea (CL). The second ovary was removed from all of the animals in Groups 2-5 on Day 8 after mating. At that time animals in Groups 4 (ovariectomized) and 5 (ovariectomized + ectopic CL) received 1-g Silastic implants releasing pro

Expression of hypoxia-inducible factors and vascular endothelial growth factor during pregnancy in the feline uterus.

Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have critical roles during the development of the fetomaternal unit. The HIFs regulate placentation and vascularization by stimulation of VEGF gene expression. This study aimed to investigate the expression profiles of HIF gene family and VEGF in the cat uterus during pregnancy. Tissue samples of the whole uterine wall were collected after ovariohysterectomy and allocated to the following groups: embryo positive (group 1 [G1], n = 7, 7 days after mating), early pregnancy (group 2 [G2], n = 7, 20 days after mating),

Expression of a kexin-like gene from the human pathogenic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Kexin-like proteins are proteinases belonging to the subtilase family which are involved in the processing of pro-proteins to their active forms. In fungi, kexin-like proteins are involved in several important cellular processes, including mating and dimorphism. Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis undergoes a thermo-regulated dimorphic transition which is essential for the establishment of the infection. Although the molecular mechanisms which rule this process are still unknown, several genes identified in P. brasiliensis have been implicated in dimorp

How the length of genital parts affects copulation performance in a carabid beetle: implications for correlated genital evolution between the sexes.

To identify factors leading to the correlated evolution of exaggerated male and female genitalia, we studied the effects of the variable dimensions of corresponding functional genital parts (male copulatory piece and female vaginal appendix) on copulatory performance in the polygamous carabid beetle Carabus (Ohomopterus) maiyasanus. We used mating pairs of individuals from two populations to increase the variances in genital dimensions and determined the copulation performance (insemination and spermatophore replacement, and copulation time) in single- and double-mating situations. Sperm competition in humans: mate guarding behavior negatively correlates with ejaculate quality.

In species where females mate with multiple males, the sperm from these males must compete to fertilise available ova. Sexual selection from sperm competition is expected to favor opposing adaptations in males that function either in the avoidance of sperm competition (by guarding females from rival males) or in the engagement in sperm competition (by increased expenditure on the ejaculate). The extent to which males may adjust the relative use of these opposing tactics has been relatively neglected. Where males can successfully avoid sperm competition from rivals, one might expect a decrease
