[The maxillary sinus morphology that affect the vision of nasal endoscopy in maxillary sinus surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the gasification of the maxillary sinus which might affect the vision of the maxillary sinus surgery with endoscope. METHOD: The diameters of 2 000 maxillary sinus were observed and measured hy normal sinus CT scan. The maxillary sinus were then genotyped with the data. RESULT: Morphology of the medial wall of maxillary sinus played an important role in maxillary sinus surgery. According to the horizontal position CT data, the middle part of maxillary sinus medial wall included two shapes: 857 triangle (85.7%) and 143 semicircular (14.3%). According to the coronal CT da

The Ethmomaxillary Sinus-A False Duplicate Maxillary Sinus.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery consistently benefits from good anatomical knowledge and modern imaging techniques. Ethmoid air cells migrate in specific topographical sites near the ethmoid. Posterior ethmoid air cells that descend into the maxillary sinus (MS) are ethmomaxillary sinuses (EMSs) that into the superior nasal meatus. Few previous studies found EMSs in 0.68% to 16.48% of cases. An EMS differs from a Haller's infraorbital cell nearing the ethmoidal infundibulum. A posterior ethmoid air cell intercalated between the ethmoid, MS and sphenoidal sinus is a Sieur's cell, but it cou

A Rare Paranasal Sinus Abnormality: Maxillary Sinus Hypoplasia.

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia is a rare condition. The majority of patients are asymptomatic but in some cases, they suffer from headaches and facial pain. Awareness of this condition is important because of misdiagnosis and possible complications during endoscopic sinus surgery. This is a presentation of 24-year-old women with unilateral maxillary sinus hypoplasia who presented with headache and nasal blockage.

Maxillary sinus marginal calcification: A novel radiological entity distinct from maxillary sinus fungal ball.

PURPOSE: Maxillary sinus marginal calcification (MSMC) is a novel radiological entity that closely mimics maxillary sinus fungal ball (MSFB), potentially leading to misdiagnosis and unwarranted endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). This study aimed to delineate the clinical and imaging features that distinguish MSMC from MSFB, propose diagnostic criteria to aid in accurate identification, and briefly explore its potential pathogenesis. METHODS: Thirteen patients with MSMC (diagnosed by imaging/pathology) and 26 with histopathologically confirmed MSFB were enrolled. Clinical data, imaging features an

Endoscopic-Assisted Trans -Posterolateral Maxillary Sinus Wall Approach for Extracting the Maxillary Third Molar Displaced Into the Maxillary Sinus.

The accidental displacement of maxillary third molars into the maxillary sinus is a relatively rare occurrence that may result in sinusitis, subsequently leading to symptoms such as facial swelling, pain, and nasal obstruction. For larger foreign bodies, traditional surgical approaches may have limitations and can potentially result in complications. This study reports the successful extraction of third molars displaced into the maxillary sinus using an endoscope-assisted, posterior lateral wall approach, achieving favorable clinical outcomes.

Endoscopic trans-nasal-vestibular approach to the maxillary sinus--application for mucoceles of the maxillary sinus.

Endoscopic endonasal surgery has been applied to the treatment of paranasal mucoceles. The approach is, however, hard to be adopted for maxillary mucoceles when the cyst is situated in the anterior and/or lateral portion of the maxillary sinus, has a thick bony lateral wall of the inferior nasal meatus, and when the patients develop compartmentalized cysts following facial trauma or sinus operation. We devised an endoscopic approach via the vestibule of the nose to reach any part of the maxillary sinus and applied it for the treatment of postoperative maxillary mucoceles, which could not be op

Histopathology of maxillary sinus mucosa with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Histopathology of the maxillary sinus mucosa with intractable odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) was investigated and the role endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) plays in its pathophysiology was clarified. STUDY DESIGN: Histopathological analysis of the OMS mucosa. METHODS: Surgical specimens were obtained from 20 patients who underwent ESS for intractable OMS. For rigid endoscopic observation of the mucosae, a 70° rigid endoscope 4 mm in diameter with an attached high definition surgical camera was used. Histopathological analyses of the maxillary sinus mucosa were conducted by li

Maxillary odontogenic myxoma involving the maxillary sinus: case report.

The aim of this paper is to report a case of odontogenic myxoma that affected the right maxilla and maxillary sinus. We have also reviewed the literature in regards of the clinical, radiographic, histological and treatment aspects of this pathology. Odontogenic myxomas of the maxillofacial region are benign lesions, without preference for gender, race or location, with extremely varied clinical and radiographic characteristics, thus increasing the number oral and maxillofacial region tumors with which we can make the differential diagnosis.

Update on Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

Implant stability is critical to implant success, and the amount of available bone is vital to achieving that end. Because of low-lying maxillary sinuses, adequate alveolar height on the posterior maxilla is often lacking in many patients in need of implant replacement. This chapter reviews both the traditional lateral sinus lift maxillary approach to achieve vertical augmentation as well as the transcrestal osteotome intraoral approach. A discussion of osseodensification will also be mentioned as an alternative approach.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of maxillary sinus.

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytomas are rare tumors that often affect the head and neck region. Diagnosis of solitary extramedullary plasmocytoma can be confirmed only when the presence of systemic disease is excluded by performing clinical, biological, and radiological investigations. Radiotherapy is considered the treatment of choice, surgery being limited to biopsy and to excision of residual disease. We report herein the case of a 62-year-old man with an extramedullary plasmacytoma arising in the left maxillary sinus who was referred for chemoradiotherapy.

Cementoblastoma involving the maxillary sinus.

A cementoblastoma is rare, benign, and of odontogenic ectomesenchymal origin, usually associated with the roots of the first mandibular tooth. We present an unusual case of one that involved the roots of the first and second maxillary molars, extended into the maxillary sinus, and was associated with a displaced unerupted third molar. The initial presentation was misleading and resulted in inadequate management. The definitive diagnosis had not been established until 2 years later.

Maxillary Sinus Anatomy and Physiology.

This study summaries the anatomy, including neurovascular anatomy, and physiology of the maxillary sinus. As the maxillary sinus is intimately related to the maxillary dentition, the maxillary sinus is the first paranasal sinus to become involved in infections of dental origin. Not only are these infections often very symptomatic but also spread to neighboring paranasal sinuses and extrasinus tissues such as the skin and the orbit.
