A rare sinonasal neoplasm: fibrosarcoma.

Sinonasal fibrosarcoma is an infrequently occurring malignant neoplasm. It usually presents with nasal obstruction and epistaxis, as do other sarcomas in this region. The final diagnosis is based on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. We report a case involving a 47-year-old woman with a 2-year history of left nasal obstruction and proptosis, as well as diplopia for the 2 months preceding her visit. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a neoplasm occupying the left nasal cavity, ethmoid sinuses, and bilateral frontal sinuses. The neoplasm also was erod

Management of clinically negative neck in maxillary carcinoma.

Maxillary cancers include neoplasms arising in both maxillary sinus and oral cavity (upper alveolar ridge, hard palate) according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer. Although it is universally accepted that the combination of surgery and radiotherapy seems to be the treatment of choice, there is no accordance about the treatment of clinically negative neck. We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients with maxillary sinus cancer and 37 with an upper alveolar ridge or hard palate cancer, evaluating the incidence of N-disease and the recurrence at local site. On the basis of our findings, we c

Colliding tumor of the paranasal sinus.

Sinonasal malignant neoplasms comprise only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. Synchronous and metachronous tumors of the head and neck have been described, but rarely have there been reports of a single tumor with two distinct histologies. Here, we describe a case of a sinonasal malignant neoplasm with two distinct histologies. A case report and literature review was performed. We present a case of paranasal sinus neoplasm involving two malignant cell types. An 83-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of symptoms suggestive of chronic sinusitis, which included nasal congestion and

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma in minor salivary gland.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma is a rare neoplasm usually confused with other neoplasms in the salivary glands region. It has great similarity with the breast carcinoma. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival submucosal bleeding and lesion, with the initial histopathological examination revealing salivary gland neoplasm of low crane. Computed tomography revealed the lesion near the tooth 27, with extension to the floor of the left maxillary sinus and to the palate mucosa. Resection of the infra-structure was performed, with a diagnosis of breast cancer secretory carcin

A rare presentation of Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma with brain metastasis and para-aortic mass.

Sinonasal Undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) comprises 3% of the head and neck tumors, including metastatic neoplasms. Herein we report the case of a 60-year-old male who was brought dead to our institute with previous records of a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the brain and MRI with evidence of tumor in the maxillary sinus with intracranial extensions. The histopathological examination of the mass in the maxillary sinus proved to be SNUC with metastases to the brain, lungs, and around the aorta. These tumors are undifferentiated and are distinct from other poorly differentiated tumors in derivi

Basic Research and Clinical Application of Pterygoplatione Fossa Projection on Lateral Nasal Wall.

Infection, neoplasms, and tumor-like lesion in pterygoplatione fossa (PPF) are common in Chinese people. Owing to its deep anatomic location, surgery through this region is difficult. Maxillary sinus pathway is widely used, but the obvious disadvantage of destroying maxillary sinus even disfigurement cannot be avoided. This study provides a new method to locate PPF by choosing some landmarks situated at lateral wall of nasal cavity as reference points to obtain credible and detailed information for clinical management. The authors measured the location of anterior wall, posterior wall, and med

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the paranasal sinuses: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This was a systematic review of studies on the use of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for paranasal sinus diseases. The applications of DWI were analyzed along with the main results, and conclusions were obtained by the investigators. STUDY DESIGN: Databases were searched using the keyword "diffusion" combined with "sinonasal," "paranasal sinus," "maxillary sinus," "frontal sinus," "ethmoid sinus," and "sphenoid sinus," including only articles that were published from 2008 to 2018. Only original English language studies with sinonasal disease samples were selected. RESULTS: Sixt

Ameloblastoma with adenoid features: Case report with cyto-histopathologic correlation and molecular findings.

Ameloblastomas are benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumors that commonly present as expansile lesions in the tooth-bearing areas. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of ameloblastomas are rare in clinical practice, and only a handful of case reports and series have described their cytologic features. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with a large and disfiguring maxillary sinus soft tissue mass sampled via transcutaneous FNA. Aspirate smears were composed of small clusters of cohesive and monotonous basaloid cells. The accompanying cellblock showed similar clusters of basal

Osteoblastoma of the maxillary sinus in a child presenting with exophthalmos.

INTRODUCTION: Benign osteoblastoma is a rare fibrous bone tumour observed in children. Very few cases involving the paranasal sinuses have been reported. SUMMARY: A 10-year-old child presented with a 1-month history of right exophthalmos. Clinical and radiological assessment demonstrated a heterogeneous tumour with bone components occupying all of the maxillary sinus. Initial histology was in favour of fibrous dysplasia. Surgery was performed via a combined approach. After review of the histology slides, the final diagnosis was that of osteoblastoma. In view of the procedure performed and aft

Olfactory neuroblastoma invading the oral cavity in a patient with inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion.

Olfactory neuroblastoma is an uncommon intranasal neoplasm that has not been previously documented to invade the oral cavity. The tumor's variable clinical manifestations and microscopic features may create a diagnostic dilemma for the clinician. The neoplasm has been identified as a direct cause of ectopic arginine vasopressin production leading to inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. An unusual case of olfactory neuroblastoma invading the oral cavity through the maxillary sinus in a patient with pathologic antidiuretic hormone secretion is reported.

[The simultaneous appearance of three uncommon tumours].

A 70-year-old woman presented with nasal obstruction and pain projecting onto the left cheek. The face seemed asymmetric including exophthalmus on the right side. Nasal endoscopic inspection revealed a sarcomatous tumor located on the middle turbinate. The CT showed that the tumor filled the left maxillary sinus completely and had eroded the maxillary bone. In addition, a round, sharply defined intraorbital neoplasm on the right side was identified in the contrast-enhanced MRI. Histological examination of the extirpated intraorbital tumour showed a neurilemmoma. A tissue biopsy of the intranas

Proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma in the maxillary sinus: an unusual presentation.

Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare histological type of soft tissue sarcoma presenting as a subcutaneous or deep dermal mass in the distal extremities of young adults. Recently, a more aggressive, so called 'proximal-type' ES has been described. The literature is limited on the clinical features and management of ES originating in the head and neck area. We here report a case of 16-year-old female who initially presented with progressive swelling and pain in the left cheek. On physical and radiographic examination, a malignant neoplasm was found in the left maxillary sinus with bony invasion.

A 65-year old female with synchronous HIV and Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of Maxillary sinus.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma in the head and neck region is a rare malignant neoplasm comprising approximately 3% of all the plasma cell neoplasms and less than 1% of head and neck tumors. This extraskeletal lesion is a unifocal, monoclonal, neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells. Some investigators believe that this lesion represents the least aggressive part of the spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms which extends to multiple myeloma. Therefore, plasmacytoma is believed to have clinical importance. We report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the right maxillary sinus of a 65-year-old H

Atypical presentation of antrochoanal polyp in a child.

Antrochoanal polyp is a benign, solitary polypoid lesion arising from the edematous mucosa of the maxillary sinus and extending through the maxillary ostium into the nose. In children, it constitutes 33% of all nasal polyps. It presents most commonly with unilateral nasal obstruction and purulent rhinorrhea. Surgery is the usual treatment for antrochoanal polyps. The primary aim of treatment for antrochoanal polyp must be complete removal with total cleaning of the maxillary sinus. In this article, we present a case of a 13-year-old boy with an antrochoanal polyp who complained of difficulty i

An atypical presentation of metastatic gestational choriocarcinoma with maxillary sinus and subcutaneous involvement; report of a case with literature review.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors are rare neoplasms with histologic features comparable to those of gonadal origin. In this case report we present a 21-year-old female patient with an atypical localization of metastatic gestational choriocarcinoma. She was admitted to our hospital with recurrent epistaxis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, rectal bleeding, subcutaneous nodules on both thighs and forearms and left maxillary mass with intranasal cavity invasion. Laboratory analysis revealed significant elevation in serum beta-human chorionic gonodotropin (beta-HCG) level. Abdominal computerized tomography
