Evaluation of the maxillofacial morphological characteristics of Apert syndrome infants.

Apert syndrome is a rare craniosynostosis syndrome characterized by irregular craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia, and syndactyly of the hands and feet. Previous studies analyzed individuals with Apert syndrome and reported some facial and intraoral features caused by severe maxillary hypoplasia. However, these studies were performed by analyzing both individuals who had and those had not received a palate repair surgery, which had a high impact on the maxillary growth and occlusion. To highlight the intrinsic facial and intraoral features of Apert syndrome, five Japanese individuals with Ape

Regulatory role of primary cilia in oral and maxillofacial development and disease.

Primary cilia have versatile functions, such as receiving signals from the extracellular microenvironment, mediating signaling transduction, and transporting ciliary substances, in tissue and organ development and clinical disease pathogenesis. During early development (embryos within 10 weeks) in the oral and maxillofacial region, defects in the structure and function of primary cilia can result in severe craniofacial malformations. For example, mice with mutations in the cilia-related genes Kif3a and IFT88 exhibit midline expansion and cleft lip/palate, which occur due to abnormalities in th

[A Review of Archaeological Studies on Dento-maxillofacial Deformities].

Dentomaxillofacial deformities are highly prevalent oral diseases that exhibit pronounced temporal variation, and their occurrence and progression are closely associated with human evolution, lifestyle transitions, and genetic background. Archaeological research provides critical evidence for tracing the origin and evolutionary trajectory of dentomaxillofacial deformities. This review systematically summarizes archaeological findings of dentomaxillofacial deformities from prehistoric to historical periods, focusing on occlusal types, prevalence, and their spatiotemporal distribution patterns.

Comprehensive correction of maxillofacial bone deformity-consideration and combined application of orthognathic surgery and facial contouring surgery.

The maxillofacial skeleton is the basis of the contour of the face. Orthognathic surgery and facial contouring surgery change jaw tissue and affect facial appearance in different manners. Orthognathic surgery is the main method to correct dental and maxillofacial deformities. It changes the shape of the jaw and improves the occlusal relationship by changing the three-dimensional position of the jaw. Facial contouring surgery mainly adopts the method of "bone reduction", which changes the "amount"of the jawbone by cutting a part of the bone tissue to improve the facial appearance, generally wit

Postoperative Complications in Craniomaxillofacial Reconstruction With Medpor.

Bone reconstruction in craniofacial surgery is a challenge for surgeons, who most commonly adopt the autogenous bone grafting and alloplastic implants in such procedures. Among the alloplastic materials, the high-density porous polyethylene is highlighted-Medpor (Medpor, Porex Surgical Inc, Newman, GA), considered to be pure polyethylene, with only 1 manufacturing process and standard pore size. The purpose of the current study has been to present through a review of literature and the types of complications derived from the use of Medpor in craniomaxillofacial bone surgery. A specific and sen

Importance of muscle movement for normal craniofacial development.

After the craniofacial structures have completed embryologic development, movement of facial muscles begins. Paraxial mesoderm of the first (mastication) and second pharyngeal (facial expression) arches gives rise to the muscles of the craniofacial area. Muscles derived from the third and fourth pharyngeal arches are involved in swallowing and vocalization. For the human newborn face to have a normal morphologic appearance, contractions of these muscles must occur to stimulate forward growth of bone, cartilage growth, and facial muscle bulk. Facial muscles begin to contract between 6 and 8 wee

A case of Kabuki (Niikawa-Kuroki) syndrome associated with manifestations resembling C-trigonocephaly syndrome.

We report a 2-year-old boy with overlapping manifestations of the Kabuki (Niikawa-Kuroki) and Opitz trigonocephaly syndromes. The proband was initially diagnosed with Opitz trigonocephaly syndrome on the basis of metopic craniosynostosis, upslanting palpebral fissures, high arched palate, redundant skin folds at the back of the neck, ventricular septal defect, broad flat thumbs, bilateral single palmar creases, left talipes equinovarus, eventration of right hemidiaphragm, and bilateral inguinal hernia. However, as he grew older, his facial profile changed to that typical of Kabuki syndrome.

A VR-system supporting symmetry related cranio-maxillofacial surgery.

The reconstruction of patients with large deformations in the facial area should consider functional aspects as well as aesthetical ones. In this paper, an integrated virtual reality system which allows bone manipulation, osteotomy planning, calculation of implants for soft tissue and bones combined with the calculation of the post-operative appearance is presented. It is a valuable tool for a wide range of cranio-maxillofacial surgeries. Due to the generalized approach of the underlying algorithms, it is a basis for further clinical applications in other surgical fields.

Binder syndrome in a mother and her son.

Binder syndrome or maxillonasal dysplasia is characterized by maxillary hypoplasia and a flat, vertical nose. Inheritance is uncertain. We report on a mother and her son with Binder syndrome. The proband was the last child of a kinship of seven children. Three sisters, three brothers and the parents were normal. The proband had a maxillary hypoplasia and a flat, vertical nose. The columella was short, the nostrils had a triangular shape and the upper lip was convex with an acute nasolabial angle. There were no dental abnormalities apart from those secondary to malocclusion. Height and intellig

Multidiscipline Therapy: Cervicofacial Vascular Anomaly With Macroglossia, Maxillofacial Deformity.

Vascular malformations are congenital vascular developmental defects that usually grow slowly and persist throughout life. Venous malformations (VMs) are the most prevalent type of vascular anomalies, representing roughly 70% of all cases. VMs can cause significant pain, impaired mobility, disrupt organ function, and in severe cases, become life-threatening. Intralesional sclerotherapy after tracheotomy is a safe and effective treatment for extensive VMs involving oropharyngeal areas of the head and neck. For the first time, we present a life-threatening case in which tracheostomy was not feas

Orofacial Deformities in 3 Related Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta) Resembling Human Binder's Syndrome.

Binder's syndrome is a rare congenital deformity characterized by midface hypoplasia, particularly around the nasomaxillary area. Genetic etiology or developmental failure caused by prenatal exposure to teratological agents has been considered. In this article, we present 3 related rhesus monkeys born with orofacial deformities similar to those found in infants with the Binder phenotype. For the first time, a primate biomodel for this condition is presented. The clinical description and association with management and environmental factors are discussed. These findings reinforce the knowledge

Virtual Surgical Planning for Management of Acute Maxillofacial Trauma.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case series. OBJECTIVE: The management of acute complex maxillofacial trauma is challenging. The intricate maxillofacial anatomy coupled with the significant functional and aesthetic repercussions of traumatic facial injuries necessitate meticulous preoperative preparation and operative precision to minimize patient morbidity. The severe displacement of bone fragments, abnormal occlusion, comminution, and the involvement of multiple skeletal subsites further complicate the restoration of premorbid function and appearance. While previously recognized as a valuable
