Global distribution of measles genotypes and measles molecular epidemiology.

A critical component of laboratory surveillance for measles is the genetic characterization of circulating wild-type viruses. The World Health Organization (WHO) Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network (LabNet), provides for standardized testing in 183 countries and supports genetic characterization of currently circulating strains of measles viruses. The goal of this report is to describe the lessons learned from nearly 20 years of virologic surveillance for measles, to describe the global databases for measles sequences, and to provide regional updates about measles genotypes detected by rece…

Measles control--can measles virus inhibitors make a difference?

Infection by measles virus (MV) is a major cause of human morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2001, the WHO, UNICEF and their partners launched the Measles Initiative, the goals of which are to interrupt the transmission of MV in large geographic areas by increasing vaccination coverage and to assess the feasibility of eradicating MV worldwide. An estimated 74% reduction in mortality resulting from measles was achieved between 2000 and 2007, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 200,000 deaths annually. Despite this progress in the control of measles, the highest number of measles cases…

Measles--Puerto Rico, 1993, and the measles elimination program.

In the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a resurgence of measles peaked in 1990 when 1805 cases (51.3 cases per 100,000 population) and 12 measles-related deaths were reported. This report summarizes the persistence of measles transmission in Puerto Rico in 1993 and describes the Puerto Rico Measles Elimination Program.

Measles resurgence in southern Africa: challenges to measles elimination.

INTRODUCTION: In seven southern African countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe), following implementation of a measles mortality reduction strategy starting in 1996, the number of annually reported measles cases decreased sharply to less than one per million population during 2006-2008. However, during 2009-2010, large outbreaks occurred in these countries. In 2011, a goal for measles elimination by 2020 was set in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region (AFR). We reviewed the implementation of the measles control strategy and measles epi…

[Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. Resurgence of measles in Europe].

Measles is a rash illness of moderate severity and high risk of serious complications, with recovery in several weeks. It is a viral disease caused by one of the most infectious and contagious pathogens that exists, whose only known reservoir is human. In 1998, the European Region of the WHO set a target of eliminating measles by 2010. This goal has not been achieved. Furthermore, it has been observed the resurgence of the disease in some parts of Europe. We review the disease and its vaccines as well as the epidemiological and social factors that have so far prevented the total control of the…

Impact of a measles elimination strategy on measles incidence in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, the two dose measles - mumps - rubella (MMR) vaccine was introduced in the Expanded Program on Immunization in 2002. The Ministry of Health then initiated a measles elimination strategy which included enhanced case-based surveillance with laboratory testing of all suspected cases. The objective of our study was to analyse national measles laboratory data from 2004 to 2008 to study the impact of the nationwide strategy on measles case incidence. Blood samples collected from suspected measles cases during the acute stage of the illness were investigated for measles specific IgM. The…

Under nutrition and measles related complications in an outbreak of measles.

An outbreak of measles was reported from Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, India. The authors investigated this outbreak with an objective to describe the under nutrition and measles related complications. A total of 723 children aged 12-59 months were included in this study. Their caregiver was interviewed for necessary information and Mid Upper Arm Circumference measurement of the affected child was done for the assessment of nutritional status. 171 (22.3%) of these had reported to have suffered from one or more measles related complication. 556 (76%) of the measles cases in this study we…

Clinical features of measles according to age in a measles epidemic.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively investigate the relationship between age and clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in patients with measles. The study included 216 patients admitted to a hospital in Daejeon, 1 of the largest cities in South Korea, during the 2000-2001 measles outbreak: very young children (<2 y old; 159 patients), school age children (9-11 y old; 34 patients), and young adults (>16 y old; 23 patients). Few of the very young children (9%), but most of the older children (86%) had a history of a prior measles-mumps-rubella vaccination. There were no st…
