BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Foregut mediastinal cysts are rare congenital anomalies arising from aberrant embryonic foregut development, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 42,000 to 1 in 100,000. These benign lesions, including bronchogenic, esophageal duplication, and neurenteric cysts, account for 12-20% of mediastinal masses. They may remain asymptomatic or cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, or neurological symptoms due to compression or complications like infection. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of their embryogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategies, t…

AIM: This study had two aims: to analyze surgical patients with mediastinal cysts and masses according to clinical, histopathological, and surgical types; and compare the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on these cases.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 132 patients who had undergone surgical intervention for mediastinal cysts and masses. Demographic, clinical, and histopathologic data were recorded. Patients were divided into two groups based on their preference for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and other surgical methods. Patients who…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mediastinal thymic cysts are a relatively rare pathology. With the expansion of eligible individuals screened with cross-sectional imaging for lung cancer, it is likely that there will be an increase in the number of individuals presenting with these cysts. Understanding this rare pathology will become more important when this incidental pathology is encountered.
METHODS: Search of PubMed was undertaken using keywords "mediastinal", "mediastinum", "thymic", "thymus", "cyst". Relevant literature was reviewed and selected for this comprehensive narrative review, includ

Mediastinal cysts (MC), mainly from embryonic origin, are benign and rare malformative lesions, gathering several varieties according to tissue origin. Diagnosis is mostly obtained thanks to tomodensitometry performance and sometimes by magnetic resonance imaging. It may be more difficult in some atypical topographies and in case of bulky MC. The most frequent, springing from division abnormality from embryonic foregut ("foregut cysts" in English literature), are primarily bronchogenic cysts (50 to 60 % of MC), which are symptomatic in 30 to 80 % of cases. Coelomic cysts, lined by a mesotheliu…

Many histologically different tumors and cysts that affect people of all ages arise from the multiple anatomic structures present in the mediastinum. The number of diagnostic possibilities can be narrowed by considering the patient's age, tumor location, the presence or absence of symptoms and signs, the association of a specific systemic disease, radiographic findings, and biochemical markers. Pathologic diagnosis is often required to confirm a presumed diagnosis and to select the optimal treatment modality. A variety of biopsy techniques for obtaining tissue from the mediastinum have been de

Pediatric mediastinal tumors and cysts are rare disorders that share many similarities with adults, yet which have important differences unique to the child. Posterior mediastinal tumors are relatively more common in children than in adults and are also more likely to be malignant in children. CT imaging facilitates the diagnostic evaluation of mediastinal masses in children. Airway compression is always a concern with large mediastinal tumors in children given their relative softer and smaller airway.

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2002eng
Nine cats, from 11 to 17 years of age (mean 13.6 years of age), were diagnosed with a cranial mediastinal cyst. Thoracic radiographs in all cats were characterized by an increased soft tissue opacity in the cranial mediastinum confirmed to be a cyst by ultrasonography or necropsy. Ultrasonographically cysts appeared as an anechoic mass. A low-cellularity clear fluid was obtained on aspiration. The majority of the cats (n = 8) presented for unrelated conditions with no signs of respiratory distress. No treatment for the cyst was pursued except for drainage during ultrasonographic-guided aspirat…

We encountered two patients with mediastinal parathyroid cysts. Patients 1 was a 44-year-old man with no complaints who had an abnormal shadow on a roentgenogram of the chest. An iperation was performed because a computed tomogram and a magnetic resonance image showed a cyst in the upper right part of the mediastinum, which was suspected to be a mediastinal thyroid cyst. Patient 2 was a 77-year-old woman with no complaints who had an abnormal shadow on a roentgenogram of the chest. Therapeutic thoracoscopy was performed because a mediastinal cyst was suspected based on the results of computed …

Parathyroid cysts are a rare cause of space-occupying lesions in the mediastinum. Because symptoms are not specific, the diagnosis is seldom made before operation. Removal was done through a cervical incision without sternal splitting.

Usually, cystic mediastinal masses are considered as benign. However, the size of the cyst is of importance, chiefly in a closed space such as the superior mediastinum. Rarely a dramatic symptomatology may develop though this was the case in the two patients we describe, who were admitted in the department. In the first case (a parathyroid cyst), the symptoms were due to a thrombosis of the left innominate vein, and in the second case (a thyroid cyst), the severity was dominated by a dramatic compression of the trachea and the vessels. The contribution of computed tomography is nowadays undisp

Benign cysts of the mediastinum are thought to be predominantly congenital in origin. Hence, a thorough understanding of their clinicopathologic characteristics is facilitated by knowledge of the embryologic development of the intrathoracic organs, as outlined in this review. Pertinent radiological and pathologic features of these lesions are also discussed. In addition, ectopic thyroid tissue may give rise to mediastinal masses. The salient attributes of these tumors are considered as well.

Cystic lesions of the anterior mediastinum in children suggest a well-known group of benign lesions that are comparatively frequent. Thymic cysts (TCs) are mostly positioned in the anterior mediastinum and some patients in the neck. Benign TCs classified as congenital intra-thoracic mesothelial cysts are commonly asymptomatic and have slight clinical significance. Multilocular TC, which can mimic another anterior mediastinal cystic tumor and is seen in adults, is more clinically important. It is a sporadic mediastinal lesion thought to arise in the course of acquired inflammation. Congenital m…

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations that occur in adults and children, with differences in distribution and presentation. We present the case of a newborn who initiated respiratory distress from the first minutes of life, presenting with hypoventilation and rightward displacement of the cardiac impulse, requiring oxygen therapy and intubation. The first radiograph shows a left pulmonary emphysema. The computerized axial tomography revealed a large mediastinal mass causing an obstructive syndrome of the left bronchus. The mass was successfully excised, resulting in a favorable

Mediastinal thymic cysts are uncommon lesions. Thymic cysts are usually diagnosed incidentally, and their origin could be congenital or acquired. Herein we present the case of a patient who presented with dyspnea. Chest computerized scan showed a large cystic mass. Surgical excision was performed. Pathology findings were consistent with congenital thymic cyst.
