Malignant transformation of a uterine leiomyoma is an exceedingly rare phenomenon. Previous reported examples of malignant neoplasms to arise so include leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, and malignant mesenchymoma. We report an intramural carcinosarcoma arising in a uterine leiomyoma in a 38-year-old woman. This case is unique in being the first recorded carcinosarcoma arising within a uterine leiomyoma and the first example of an epithelial neoplasm to do so. We discuss the differential diagnosis and possible pathogenesis of the tumor that has likely arisen secondary to epitheliogenesis in a mese…

A total of 307 breast neoplasms and tumour-like conditions were reviewed to assess the frequency with which bone and/or cartilage occurred. Of 90 fibroadenomas, 1 (1.1%) and 2 of 158 breast carcinomas (1.3%) contained bone, one benign mesenchymoma contained cartilage, and one benign "mixed" tumour (pleomorphic adenoma) displayed cartilage and bone. Twenty-two papillomas and 34 cases of gynaecomastia did not contain any cartilage or bone. This study confirms the impression that the occurrence of bone or cartilage in human breast neoplasms is rare. These lesions are briefly discussed with refere…

We report the first case, in a 4-month-old girl, of an aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to infantile cartilaginous hamartoma of the rib. Infantile cartilaginous hamartoma of the rib (benign mesenchymoma) is a large, expansile tumour that is characterised by cartilaginous, vascular and primitive-appearing stromal and mesenchymal elements. Most cases are diagnosed at less than 1 year of age and may even be congenital. Aneurysmal bone cyst may be a secondary lesion to pre-existing tumours such as giant cell tumours, osteoblastomas, angiomas and chondroblastomas. This unique case is presented with r…

Two fatal childhood cases of the rare pulmonary blastoma are reported. One was associated with a congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation. … e childhood forms of pulmonary blastoma. It is further suggested that pulmonary blastoma, malignant mesenchymoma of the lung, and primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma may have a common pathogenetic origin.

Hamartoma is a tumour-like malformation appearing as a focal overgrowth of normal cells. Leiomyomatous hamartomas (LHs) are rare in the oral cavity and commonly seen in the Japanese and less than 40 cases have been reported in the Japanese and English literature. The clinical differential diagnoses are irritational (traumatic) fibroma and congenital epulis. It has to be differentiated histopathologically from its neoplastic counterparts and mesenchymomas. Hence, we report such a case of LHs, which presented as a sessile gingival growth occurring in the midline in a 15-year-old girl. The final …

The clinicopathologic features of three examples of mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall are described. The entity has been recorded under a number of names including osteochondroma, osteochondrosarcoma, benign chondroblastoma, mesenchymoma, and chondromatous hamartoma. The condition is manifest at birth or shortly thereafter with deformity of the chest wall and respiratory distress. Radiographic examination reveals a well-defined, partly calcified mass involving one or more ribs. The tumor is composed predominantly of chondroid tissue with large endothelium-lined blood spaces and immature …

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (EOS) is rare and commonly arises in the retroperitoneum, limbs, head and neck. There is no significant differenc … subtypes were reported occasionally. It should be distinguished with myositis ossificans, malignant mesenchymoma, giant cell tumor and parosteal osteosarcoma. We present an EOS arising in the penis. The reported case is characterized by the original tumor site as well as by the recurrence site; by the slowly evolutive nature of the lesio … mors compels us to raise the question of the very nature of this neoplasm: liposarcoma or malignant mesenchymoma. The potential clinical and histologic outcome of mesenchymal tumors of the spermatic cord cause us to propose direct orchidectomy and surveillance of the retroperitoneal space throughout the evolution of the process, even far off into the future.

Pancreatic tumors are primary in most of the cases. Pancreatic metastases associated with other primary malignancies, especially pancreatic metastasis of leiomyosarcoma, are uncommon. A 66-year-old woman underwent surgical resection of malignant mesenchymoma (70% osteosarcoma and 30% leiomyosarcoma) in the right thigh. In the postoperative period, a pancreatic mass was identified radiologically by abdominal computed tomography. Pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. The surgical specimen revealed leiomyosarcoma metastasized to the pancreas. A metastatic nodule on the remnant…

A case of cavernous haemangioma of the thymus is reported, including the findings of conventional X-ray imaging, computed tomography, surgery and histology. In addition, the literature of thymic angiomatous mesenchymomas as well as of mediastinal haemangiomas is reviewed. The tumour of a 29-year old and asymptomatic woman was located in the anterior mediastinal compartment at the site of the left thymic lobe. The tumour contained phleboliths and was surrounded by a small capsule of fat. After bolus infusion of contrast agent a delay of enhancement could be detected by CT, which led to the diag…

We report a series of three cases of pleomorphic adenoma with extensive lipometaplasia, a recently described subtype of pleomorphic adenoma … t-containing tumors (such as lipoadenoma, spindle cell lipoma, interstitial lipomatosis, and benign mesenchymoma), is discussed. It is likely that the ability of myoepithelial cells to undergo various metaplasias is the cause of the unusual histologic appearances of this tumor.

BACKGROUND: Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (EMCMT) is a rare neoplasm that mainly affects the tongue and harbors recurrent, although not exclusive, gene fusions. Owing to its rarity, overlapping features with other tumors may lead to challenges in the microscopic diagnosis. We aimed to perform a systematic review focusing on the histomolecular findings of EMCMT of the oral and maxillofacial region and to evaluate the possible association between microscopic features with the genetic background.
METHODS: An electronic search was made on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid, and Embase. Cl

Mixed mesenchymal tumors of the vulva are rare lesions. On other hand, aggressive angiomyxoma is a recently characterized neoplasm occurring principally in the pelvic soft-tissues and showing propensity for local recurrence. The benign soft-tissue tumors are small than malign neoplasm, mimicking and often are misdiagnosed as cysts of Bartholin's gland. In this report we describe one case of a benign, giant and atypical mixed mesenchymal tumor of the vulva and its particular clinical characteristics.

In a consecutive series from 1968 to 1978, 11 hepatic resections encompassing at least two hepatic segments were carried out for neoplasia in pediatric patients varying in age from 7 days to 14 years. There were no operative deaths. These resections consisted of four right lobectomies, three extended right lobectomies, one right lobectomy with right nephrectomy and inferior vena caval resection, two left lobectomies, and one left extended lobectomy. Diagnoses were hepatoblastoma in six patients, Wilms' tumor invading the liver in two, hemangioendothelioma in two, and malignant mesenchymoma in …

The value of computed tomography (CT) in the assessment of pelvic malignancy is well established. However, the importance of scanning caudad to the symphysis pubis to include the perineum has not been emphasized. The CT anatomy of the perineum in the transverse, coronal, and sagittal planes planes in normal subjects and in cadaver specimens is reviewed, and experience in 22 patients with pelviperineal pathology is reported. Malignancies in 16 patients were of the cervix (seven), vulva (six), vagina (two), and a recurrent mesenchymoma (one). Six patients had abscesses; one of these had cellulit…
