Mucinous mesenteric cyst of the sigmoid mesocolon: a rare entity.

Mesenteric cysts are rare and occur in patients of any age. They are asymptomatic and found incidentally or during the management of their complications. They commonly originate from the small bowel mesentery, although a proportion has been found to originate from the mesocolon (24%) and retroperitoneum (14.5%). A mesenteric cyst originating in the sigmoid mesocolon is a very rare finding.

Giant isolated mesenteric hydatid cyst case report without organ involvement.

A 21-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of intermittent attacks of abdominal distention and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography (USG) and abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a large multicystic mass. After the operation, histopathological findings revealed a lamellated ectocyst and germinal layer with a thick outer, non-cellular membrane in the wall of the cyst, making a diagnosis of primary hydatid cyst for sure. He was discharged on the 10th postoperative day with albendazole 800 mg/day treatment. Herein, we report an unusual case of an isolated primary hydatid cyst of

Laparoscopic enucleation of a jejunal mesenteric cyst: a case report.

Mesenteric cysts (MC) are a rare surgical condition occurring approximately in 1/200.000-350.000. The aetiology is unknown and the rarity of the tumor has led to confusion about their nature and classifi cation. They can be uni- or multi-locular, and are mostly benign. Approximately 830 cases have been reported in the literature and only four of them were found to be malignant. Cysts are usually diagnosed during routine abdominal examinations, they can present with various signs, such as acute abdominal pain, chronic abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, or change in bowel habit. Although rare,…

Acute abdomen caused by a ruptured spontaneously infected mesenteric cyst.

Mesenteric cysts are uncommon and usually asymptomatic abdominal tumors. Spontaneous infection is a very rare complication of these lesions. This report presents a case of spontaneously infected and perforated mesenteric cyst. Any incidental mesenteric cyst diagnosed during radiological examination should be removed completely, even if it has been asymptomatic, to prevent potential life-threatening complications.

Infected Mesenteric Cysts: A Rare Cause of Abdominal Pain.

Mesenteric cysts are mostly congenital cysts of varied etiology. They occur twice as often in females than in males. They have varied clinical presentations. Most of them are asymptomatic, and a few present with abdominal mass, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) are essential in their diagnosis. These cysts may get complicated due to hemorrhage, torsion, rupture, or infection and may become life-threatening with features of acute abdominal pain and peritonitis. This is a case presentation of a 22-year-old Indian female who came with abdominal pai…

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic management of mesenteric cysts in children.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts (MCs) are rare intra-abdominal masses in children, and laparoscopic complete cyst resection is still difficult. This study reviewed our experience in diagnosing and managing MCs at our center, focusing on the clinical characteristics of MCs and the effectiveness of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the records of all patients diagnosed with MCs and managed with robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery at our center between February 2021 and August 2022. We analyzed demographic characteristics, clinical manifestat…

Management outcomes of mesenteric cysts in paediatric age group.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal masses and high index of suspicion is required to clinically suspect this pathology and make a definitive diagnosis. They are most commonly located in the ileal mesentery but can be located anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract mesentery and may extend into the retroperitoneum. The rarity of these anomalies and diversity of clinical picture pose challenges in the diagnosis and operative management. The objective of this study is to determine the demographic pattern, clinicopathological diagnosis and management outcome of mesenteric cyst…

The surgical experience for retroperitoneal, mesenteric and omental cyst in children.

PURPOSE: Intra-abdominal cystic masses originating from the retroperitoneum, mesentery or omentum are very rare and mostly benign tumors, but sometimes present as a complicated cyst encasing the major organs. METHODS: We analyzed the clinical findings, histologic diagnosis, and surgical outcomes in children who underwent operation for retroperitoneal, omental, and mesenteric cyst from 1998 to 2010, retrospectively. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients (male, 12; female, 11) underwent the operation at a median age of 46 months (range, 9 days to 16 years). Among them, 17 cysts presented one or two s…

Conservative approach to the acute management of a large mesenteric cyst.

Mesenteric cysts are rare, benign gastrointestinal cystic lesions, which are often non-troublesome and present as an incidental radiological finding. However, surgery is often performed in the acute setting to remove lesions that are symptomatic. This report highlights the case of a large, symptomatic mesenteric cyst managed successfully with initial conservative measures followed by planned elective surgery. A 44-year-old female presented with a four-day history of generalised abdominal pain associated with distension, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting. Computer tomography revealed a large (21.7 …

Mesenteric cysts. A case treated by laparoscopy and a review of the literature.

Mesenteric cysts are one of the rarest abdominal tumors. Since the first report of a mesenteric cyst by Benevienal in 1507, only 820 cases have been reported. The symptoms depend on the size and location of the cyst. The main presenting symptom is abdominal pain, followed by nausea and vomiting. Some mesenteric cysts may present as an acute abdomen due to a possible complication, such as hemorrhage, rupture, or torsion of the cyst. The treatment of choice for mesenteric cyst is complete excision to avoid recurrence and possible malignant transformation. We report an additional case of mesenter…

Laparoscopic resection of a mesenteric cyst: presentation of a new case.

Mesenteric cysts are rare abdominal tumors which develop as a result of embryonic defects of the lymphatics. Symptoms derived from this pathology are vague and nonspecific, being frequently abdominal pain, heartburn, and nausea. The treatment of these tumors is complete surgical excision. The laparoscopic approach is replacing open abdominal surgical procedures. We present a case of successful laparoscopic resection of a mesenteric cyst using only three trocars.

[Mesenteric cysts: etiopathogenetic and clinical considerations and a case report].

According to the literature authors describe the etiopathology and symptoms of a case of uncomplicated mesenteric cyst observed and treated by simple enucleation. Therefore after describing the peculiarity of this disease, authors underline the difficulty of diagnosis also using instrumental devices such as ultrasound and CT scan. In particular complicated mesenteric cyst is pointed out because it may be responsible of acute abdomen. About treatment of uncomplicated mesenteric cyst the always more frequent use of laparoscopy is underlined.

[Sonographic appearances of mesenteric cysts--report of 2 cases].

Mesenteric cyst is defined as a cystic mass located in the mesentery, and has rarely been reported. Before the clinical use of ultrasound (US), the imaging diagnosis of the abdominal mass depended on plain X-ray films and contrast examinations to delineate the space occupying lesion. The later use of US enables us to readily identify mass character. For example, whether it is cystic or solid, with or without septum, or whether there is sediment in the cyst. US examination is the method of choice in evaluating abdominal masses. Two cases of pediatric mesenteric cysts were brought to our hospita…

Mesenteric and omental cysts: histologic classification with imaging correlation.

Forty-one cases of mesenteric and omental cysts are reported. Histologically, several specific types could be distinguished: lymphangioma, 19 cases; nonpancreatic pseudocyst, 11 cases; enteric duplication cyst, six cases; mesothelial cyst, three cases; and enteric cyst, two cases. A lymphangioma is usually a multiloculated cyst located in the mesentery that shows no discernible wall on computed tomography (CT) and may have characteristics of fat on CT and magnetic resonance imaging. Abnormalities in the small bowel mucosa were frequently noted on barium studies. A nonpancreatic pseudocyst is u

Giant chylous mesenteric cyst in a young adult: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric cysts are rare benign intra-abdominal lesions located in the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract and may extend from the base of the mesentery into the retro-peritoneum. Majority of mesenteric cysts occurred in the small bowel mesentery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male presented with a one year history of nonspecific abdominal pain and distension. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large cystic mass. During surgical exploration, a giant mesenteric cyst was identified. Complete surgical enucleation of the cyst was successfully performed without requiring bowel r…

Childhood mesenteric cyst: A rare intra-abdominal entity with literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mesenteric cysts are uncommon intra-abdominal benign masses that appear in childhood with varying degrees of clinical manifestations, ranging from being asymptomatic to presenting as an acute abdomen. The diagnosis is made incidentally during the work-up for other abdominal pathologies such as acute appendicitis, bowel obstruction, etc. The treatment is mostly surgical and varies depending on the clinical type of the lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-month-old child was referred to our teaching hospital's pediatric surgery department with an abdominal mass. The pati…
