Selective Adsorption of Thiols Using Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Metal Oxides.

Selective capture of thiols from a synthetic hydrogen sulfide containing mixture using supported nanogold materials has been explored for the potential removal of thiols from sour gas production fluids. In this research, TiO2-, Al2O3-, SiO2-, and ZnO-supported gold nanoparticles have been studied for their usage as regeneratable adsorbents to capture CH3SH, C2H5SH, and i-C3H7SH. Au/TiO2 and Au/Al2O3 showed promising properties for removing the thiols efficiently from a gas-phase mixture; however, Au/Al2O3 did catalyze some undesirable side reactions, e.g., carbonyl sulfide formation. It was fo

Photoinduced electron transfer from semiconductor quantum dots to metal oxide nanoparticles.

Quantum dot-metal oxide junctions are an integral part of next-generation solar cells, light emitting diodes, and nanostructured electronic arrays. Here we present a comprehensive examination of electron transfer at these junctions, using a series of CdSe quantum dot donors (sizes 2.8, 3.3, 4.0, and 4.2 nm in diameter) and metal oxide nanoparticle acceptors (SnO(2), TiO(2), and ZnO). Apparent electron transfer rate constants showed strong dependence on change in system free energy, exhibiting a sharp rise at small driving forces followed by a modest rise further away from the characteristic re

Metal sulfide nanoparticles synthesized via enzyme treatment of biopolymer stabilized nanosuspensions.

Nanoparticles of CuS, Cu(x)S, Ag(2)S and CdS were successfully prepared using a novel general and green synthetic process to give dextran biopolymer stabilised metal sulfifde nanosuspensions. Following preparation, dextranase enzyme was used to remove the bulk of the bound dextran to give pure stable metal sulfide nanocrystals for application in for example aspects of medicine, photonics and solar cells. Particles of good homogeneity were obtained and the CuS nanoparticle size was controlled to 9-27 nm by adjusting the reaction conditions. Cu(2)S nanoparticles were 14 nm, Ag(2)S nanoparticles

Selective organ deposition of nanoparticles directed by metal-organic network coatings.

Despite significant advances in nanoengineering, developing a universal nanoparticle engineering strategy that enables tailored nanoparticle organ deposition post intravenous administration remains challenging. Here, we report a simple and modular strategy mediated by metal-organic network coatings composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG), proteins, phenolic ligands, and metal ions. The versatile binding affinity of phenolic ligands facilitates the formation of coatings on diverse nanoparticle platforms, including quantum dots, lipid, polymeric, inorganic, and metal-organic nanoparticles. Metal-based nanoparticles for reprogramming macrophage polarization: Advances in immunomodulatory nanotherapeutics.

Macrophages, key players in the immune system, exhibit remarkable plasticity, polarizing into pro-inflammatory (M1) or anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes in response to microenvironmental cues. This functional dichotomy is pivotal in the pathogenesis and progression of a wide array of diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, and tissue injury. Consequently, modulating macrophage polarization has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy. Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) have garnered significant attention in this field due to their unique ph

Recent Trends in Bioinspired Metal Nanoparticles for Targeting Drug-Resistant Biofilms.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) biofilm infections characterized by densely packed microbial communities encased in protective extracellular matrices pose a formidable challenge to conventional antimicrobial therapies and are a major contributor to chronic, recurrent and device-associated infections. These biofilms significantly reduce antibiotic penetration, facilitate the survival of dormant persister cells and promote horizontal gene transfer, all of which contribute to the emergence and persistence of MDR pathogens. Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as promising alternatives due to their p…

Homogenization of Post-Transition Metal Alloys into High-Entropy-Like Nanoparticles.

Presently, the most common high-entropy systems are formed from the mixing of immiscible transition metals under extreme conditions. Here, a new class of high-entropy-like nanoparticles is reported, based entirely on post-transition metals, Ga, In, Sn, Zn, and Bi, which undergo core-level nanoscale homogenization via low-temperature sonication. Starting from a bulk high-entropy-like melt, with clear phase segregation, including Ga-rich, Zn-rich, and Bi-rich domains, ultrasonic agitation is applied to disrupt their immiscibility. The resulting cavitation and shear forces promote rapid mixing an

Metal-organic framework-edaravone nanoparticles for radiotherapy-induced brain injury treatment.

Cranial radiotherapy may cause damage to normal brain tissues and induce cognitive dysfunction, so developing an effective strategy to prevent radiotherapy-induced brain injury is essential. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as vectors for the delivery of neuroprotective drugs due to their high drug loading capacity and low toxicity. In this study, we synthesized MIL-53(Cr) nanoparticles, which were used to deliver edaravone, and modified the surface of the nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol and Angiopep-2 (EDA@MIL-53(Cr)-P/A) to improve their oral bioavailability and ability to

Metal Nanoparticles Assisted Ultrafast Laser Plasmonic Microwelding of Oxide-Semiconductor Interconnects.

Integration of wafer-scale oxide and semiconductor materials meets the difficulties of residual stress and materials incompatibility. In this work, Ag NPs thin film is contributed as an energy confinement layer between oxide (Sapphire) and semiconductor (Si) wafers to localize the materials interaction during ultrafast laser irradiation. Due to the plasmonic effects generated within constructed dielectric-metal-dielectric structures (i.e., Sapphire-Ag-Si), thermal diffusion and chemical reaction between Ag and its neighboring materials facilitate the microwelding of Sapphire and Si wafers. Meta-analysis of metal nanoparticles degrading pesticides: what parameters are relevant?

The rise in the global population demands an increasing food supply and methods to boost agricultural production. Pesticides are necessary for agricultural production models, avoiding losses of close to 40%. Nevertheless, the extensive use of pesticides can cause their accumulation in the environment, causing problems for human health, biota, and ecosystems. Thus, new technologies have emerged to remove these wastes efficiently. In recent years, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) have been reported as promising catalysts to degrade pesticides; however, a systematic understanding of the

High-Sensitive Mass Cytometry Metal Tags Based on Noble Metal Nanoparticles Assisting Acute Myeloid Leukemia Immune Checkpoint Profiling.

Mass cytometry is optimal for acute leukemia immune checkpoint profiling. However, current commercial metal-chelating polymer (MCP) metal tags limit its sensitivity due to low metal loading capacity. We report a novel synthetic strategy employing antibody-conjugated gold or platinum nanoparticles (AuNP/PtNP) for high-dimensional single-cell immunophenotyping in both single cell suspension mass cytometry and imaging mass cytometry. Extremely low-dose AuNP (34 NPs/cell) exhibited MCP-comparable sensitivity, while high doses enabled up to 48-fold signal amplification. Furthermore, integration of

Mechanism of Producing Metallic Nanoparticles, with an Emphasis on Silver and Gold Nanoparticles, Using Bottom-Up Methods.

Bottom-up nanoparticle (NP) formation is assumed to begin with the reduction of the precursor metallic ions to form zero-valent atoms. Studies in which this assumption was made are reviewed. The standard reduction potential for the formation of aqueous metallic atoms-E0(Mn+aq/M0aq)-is significantly lower than the usual standard reduction potential for reducing metallic ions Mn+ in aqueous solution to a metal in solid state. E0(Mn+aq/M0solid). E0(Mn+aq/M0aq) values are negative for many typical metals, including Ag and Au, for which E0(Mn+aq/M0solid) is positive. Therefore, many common moderate

Influence of thermal treatment on the physicochemical, biological, and ecotoxicological properties of plant-mediated metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles.

Plant-mediated 'green' synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) is widely reported, but the exact functional role of the retained phytochemical capping layer versus the core metal remains contested. Furthermore, the impact of thermal calcination-a common post-synthesis purification step-on the bio-functional and ecological profile of these NPs is poorly understood. We synthesized four distinct biogenic NPs-Ag and Fe using Salvinia molesta extract, and Cu and Zn using Mimosa pigra extract. While the Cu, Zn, and Fe NPs were evaluated in both non-calcined (as-synthesized) and thermally calcined states, t

Group 12 metal monoselenocarboxylates: synthesis, characterization, structure and their transformation to metal selenide (MSe; M = Zn, Cd, Hg) nanoparticles.

Reactions of [MCl2(tmeda)] with potassium salts of monoselenocarboxylic acids gave complexes of the general formula [M(SeCOR)2(tmeda)] (M = Zn, Cd; R = Ph, Tol; Tol = C6H4-p-CH3; tmeda = Me2NCH2CH2NMe2). The analogous mercury complexes were unstable at room temperature and afforded HgSe nanoparticles during the course of reaction. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, NMR (1H, 13C, 77Se, 113Cd) data. The X-ray structural analysis of [Cd(SeCOPh)2(tmeda)] revealed that the complex is a discrete monomer having an approximate tetrahedral coordination environment a
