Most extensive-stage small cell lung cancers have disseminated disease at diagnosis, and solitary adrenal metastasis from small cell lung cancer is rare. We report the case of a 51-year-old man with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer with solitary right adrenal metastasis (T2N0M1), who was cured with resection of primary tumor, chemotherapy (cisplatin, etoposide), adrenalectomy, consolidative thoracic radiotherapy, and prophylactic cranial irradiation. He remained cancer free, 7.5 years since diagnosis. For small cell lung cancer with solitary adrenal gland metastasis, metastasectomy combi

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of patients with limited metastatic lesions from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial; however, reports suggest that a subset of patients may benefit from complete resection including metastasectomy.
METHODS: Between 1997 and 2009, 99 patients underwent complete solitary synchronous NSCLC metastasis resection in a single center. Only patients who met the potentially curative operation criteria (ie, primary NSCLC and metastasis resection of a solitary pulmonary or solitary extrapulmonary metastases) were included for retrospective analyses wit

OBJECT: The aim is the evaluation of lymph node metastasis rate during pulmonary metastasectomy harvested by technique of systematic mediastinal lymphadenectomy in year 2009-2010.
METHODS: We performed systematic mediastinal lymphadenectomy (the same technique as in non-small cell lung cancer) during pulmonary metastasectomy.
RESULTS: There was found lymph node metastasis in four cases from 70 patients. The rate of metastatic involved mediastinal lymph node 5.7% harvested during lung metastasectomy is on lower limit of published interval. We expected higher lymph node involvement in lung met

BACKGROUND: Early intrapulmonary recurrence is a major problem after pulmonary metastasectomy related to colorectal cancer. However, the risk factors for early intrapulmonary recurrence are not clear.
METHODS: Between August 2001 and December 2007, 125 patients underwent pulmonary metastasectomy after colorectal cancer. The prognostic factors for overall survival were evaluated, including early (within 6 months) intrapulmonary recurrence. The factors related to early intrapulmonary recurrence were also analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirteen patients (10.4%) had early intrapulmonary recurrence. The medi

BACKGROUND: Combined resection of solitary synchronous brain metastases and non-small-cell lung cancer has been shown to be successful. Thus, we proposed combining the surgery of solitary, extracranial metastases, and resectable lung cancer.
METHODS: Between March 1987 and December 1994, surgery was performed on nine patients with non-small-cell lung cancer with synchronous, solitary, extracranial, or distant metastasis: adrenal (n = 5), cutaneous (n = 2), axillary lymph node (n = 1) and kidney (n = 1). Criteria for operating on these patients included: primary tumor that was locally resectab

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive (MI) pulmonary metastasectomy may improve access in frail patients who are at high-risk for complications after thoracotomy. We compared postoperative complications among frail and non-frail patients undergoing pulmonary metastasectomy.
METHODS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (2017-2019) identified adult patients who underwent pulmonary metastasectomy. Frailty was determined using Johns Hopkins Adjusted Clinical Groups indicator. Independent propensity-score matches were performed for the open and MI cohorts. Odds ratio (OR) and incidence ra

BACKGROUND/AIM: Metastasis to the pancreas is rare, and the benefit of resection for secondary pancreatic cancer is poorly defined. Furthermore, there are no guidelines for pancreatic metastasectomy in such patients. The purpose of this study was to discuss our experience with the operative management of secondary pancreatic cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 76 patients who underwent pancreatic metastasectomy for secondary pancreatic cancer between January 2000 and December 2020 at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Republic of Korea.
RESULTS: Among the study subjec

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of data on the role of metastasectomy for metastatic anal cancer on survival outcomes. We aim to define the role of metastasectomy in stage IV anal cancer.
METHODS: National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2004 to 2014 was accessed to include patients with metastatic anal cancer, excluding adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine, and 'other' histologies. We compared patients undergoing metastasectomy (n = 165) to those who did not have metastasectomy (n = 2093) by age, sex, cancer grade, and site of metastasis, including metastasis to bone, liver, and lung, using chi-squar

PURPOSE: Pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinoma have not generally been included in the tumour types considered for metastasectomy. However, there is an increasing interest that metastasectomy in well-selected patients can prolong survival. This review aims to establish the recent evidence on the surgical management of oligometastatic disease and survival outcome in patients who underwent metastasectomy focusing on isolated hepatic and pulmonary metastases.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed in the PubMed database to identify all original articles on the role of metastasectomy fo

BACKGROUND: Although studies of metastasectomy have been limited primarily to institutional experiences, reports of favorable long-term outcomes have generated increasing interest. In the current study, the authors attempted to define the national practice patterns in metastasectomy for 4 common malignancies with varying responsiveness to systemic therapy.
METHODS: The National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample was used to estimate the national incidence of metastasectomy for colorectal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, and melanoma from 2000 through 2011. Incidence-adjusted rates were determin

BACKGROUND: Treatment of synchronous resectable colorectal liver metastases has traditionally involved a staged surgical approach. Specialized centers have demonstrated good results with simultaneous resection. We aim to report our outcomes at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) with simultaneous liver metastasectomy at the time of operation for primary colorectal or gynecologic malignancy
STUDY DESIGN: From January 2010- September 2011, 6 patients underwent simultaneous resection of liver metastases and primary colorectal or gynecologic malignancy. Operative, postoperative, a

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical outcome and significance of mediastinal lymph node dissection (LND) during pulmonary resection of metastases from colorectal adenocarcinoma.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed. Between April 1985 and December 2009, 518 patients underwent 720 pulmonary metastasectomies for metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma. Relevant factors were analyzed with the χ2 or Fisher exact test and the Mann-Whitney test. Survival and lymph node (LN) recurrence-free period after pulmonary metastasectomy were analyzed with Kaplan-Meier and

The aim of study was to investigate the pattern of mediastinal lymph node metastases in patients with colorectal cancer metastasis. Twenty-four pulmonary metastasectomies with mediastinal lymphadenectomies were performed on 19 patients (14 unilateral and five bilateral operations). The metastases were centrally localised in eight cases; the primary tumour was colon cancer in 15 patients and rectal cancer in nine cases. The number and the localisation of metastases were recorded, as the clinico-pathological data of the primary tumours. The results were compared with the pattern of metastases in

We report a case of 67-year-old Japanese woman with two types of metastasectomy for metachronous metastases of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The initial nephrectomy for left RCC was performed in April 1977. The pathological diagnosis was clear cell carcinoma grade1-2, pT1b. In May 1996, computed tomography (CT) revealed a tumor in the upper pole of the remaining right kidney. The renal tumor was enucleated in June 1996. The histopathological diagnosis of the tumors was clear cell carcinoma. In December 1998, conventional B-mode ultrasound US detected solid tumors in the uncus, body, and tail of

BACKGROUND: Although routine systematic mediastinal and hilar lymph node dissection contemporary with pulmonary metastasectomy has not been uniformly performed in many thoracic surgical centers, the value of this procedure needs to be investigated.
METHODS: Between 1996 and 2001, 245 patients (157 men, 88 women) underwent pulmonary resection of metastatic colorectal carcinoma, sarcoma, and renal cell carcinoma. Generally, systematic mediastinal and hilar lymph node dissection was performed concurrently with pulmonary metastasectomy. Patients were assessed for patterns of lymph node metastases

A patient with a large duodenal melanoma metastasis, involving adjacent jejunum and colon, is presented. Treatment consisted of a combination of radical surgery and active specific immunotherapy by means of an autologous tumor cell vaccine and BCG after which a recurrence-free survival of now more than 10 years has been observed. The role of surgery and immunotherapy in the treatment of metastatic melanoma are discussed.

Metastasectomy is widely practiced in surgical oncology. Well established examples are the resection of liver metastases in patients with colo-rectal cancer, wedge resections of lung metastases in sarcoma, or the surgical removal of solitary brain metastases derived from solid tumours. The latter example has been tested in randomised phase III trials and found to be an effective mode of treatment compared with radiation therapy alone. In the other fields no such trials are available, and data chiefly stem from retro- and prospective phase II trials. For a variety of reasons, phase II studies a

BACKGROUND: Routine lymphadenectomy during metastasectomy for pulmonary metastases of colorectal cancer has been recommended by several recent expert consensus meetings. However, evidence supporting lymphadenectomy is limited. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature on the impact of simultaneous lymph node metastases on patient survival during metastasectomy for colorectal pulmonary metastases (CRPM).
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines of studies on lymphadenectomy during pulmonary metastasectomy for CRPM. Articles

This is the first study to evaluate the feasibility of mediastinal lymph node dissection (MLND) based on sentinel lymph node (SLN) status during pulmonary metastasectomy. A total of 22 patients (16 men, 6 women; age 63.3 ± 7.01 years) who were candidates for metastasectomy through segmentectomy or lobectomy with MLND owing to cancers metastatic to the lung were enrolled in this study. Radiotracer was administered at the peritumoral region before surgery or soon after initiating surgery. During the operation, the radioactivity of the lymph nodes (ex vivo) was counted with a handheld gamma probe
