Fish and seafood are recommended diet constituents providing high quality protein, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids, mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, these foodstuffs can also be the major source ofmethylmercury intake in humans. In general, more than 90% of the mercury in fish is found as methylmercury, but contents of methylmercury can vary considerably between species. Predatory species that are at the top of the food chain and live a long time, may accumulate higher levels of methylmercury. This paper contains information about sources o

In the United States, aquatic mercury contamination originates from point and non-point sources to watersheds. Here, we studied the contribution of mercury in urban runoff derived from historically contaminated soils and the subsequent production of methylmercury in a stream-wetland complex (Durham, North Carolina), the receiving water of this runoff. Our results demonstrated that the mercury originated from the leachate of grass-covered athletic fields. A fraction of mercury in this soil existed as phenylmercury, suggesting that mercurial anti-fungal compounds were historically applied to thi

Methylmercury is now recognized as an important developmental neurotoxicant, though this insight developed slowly over many decades. Developmental neurotoxicity was first reported in a Swedish case report in 1952, and from a serious outbreak in Minamata, Japan, a few years later. Whereas the infant suffered congenital poisoning, the mother was barely harmed, thus reflecting a unique vulnerability of the developing nervous system. Nonetheless, exposure limits for this environmental chemical were based solely on adult toxicity until 50 years after the first report on developmental neurotoxicity.

In the past, methylmercury compounds were manufactured as fungicides or appeared as unwanted byproducts of the chemical industry, but today the methylation of inorganic mercury in aquatic sediments and soils is the predominant if not the sole source of methylmercury. This form of mercury is bioaccumulated to a high degree in aquatic food chains to attain its highest concentrations in edible tissues in long-lived predatory fish living in both fresh and ocean waters. It is well absorbed from the diet and distributes within a few days to all tissues in the body. It crosses without hindrance the b…

Dimethylmercury (DMM) and monomethylmercury (MMM) are extremely toxic and dangerous environmental contaminants. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to remove these substances from the environment. This study looks into the efficient decomposition of DMM and MMM by low-energy electrons. The calculated quantum scattering properties reveal the presence of metastable electronic states in both molecules. An examination of the spatial features of the electronic resonances, as well as the computation and characterization of the vibrational normal modes, suggests possible bond break pathways of t

Potential degradation pathways of dimethylmercury (DMHg) remain as one of the critical knowledge gaps in the marine biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). Although Hg is known to be highly reactive with reduced sulfur, demethylation of DMHg in the presence of sulfide has until now remained experimentally untested. Here, we provide the first experimental support for demethylation of DMHg to monomethylmercury (MMHg) in the presence of both dissolved sulfide and mackinawite (FeS(s)m). The degradation of DMHg was shown to be pH dependent, with higher demethylation rates at pH 9 than pH 5. At room t

Four types of mercury species, namely, methylmercury, organic mercury other than methylmercury, inorganic mercury, and insoluble mercury, deemed to be mercuric selenide (HgSe), were found in the liver of 45 ringed seals from the Canadian Arctic. On average, methylmercury, at 2%, made up the smallest fraction of the total mercury in the liver of these animals. Of the total mercury concentration in seal liver, 53% was insoluble mercury, estimated to be largely mercuric selenide. Other workers have found this compound to be present in mammalian liver and identified it to be HgSe. Organic mercury

Using reaggregating rat brain cell cultures at two different stages of differentiation, we examined the biochemical effects of a 10-day treatment with nanomolar concentrations of methylmercuric chloride (monomethylmercury), in the presence or absence of promoters of hydroxyl radical formation (10 microM copper sulphate plus 100 microM ascorbate). A decrease in total protein content accounted for the general cytotoxicity of these compounds, whereas selective effects were assessed by determining the activities of cell type-specific enzymes. Methylmercury, up to 100 nM, as well as the copper asco

Previous experimental studies on transplacental passage and possible fetotoxicity of methylmercury have almost exclusively used a single dosage or 2-4 repeated doses of mercury on specific days during gestation and often used at relatively high dose levels. In previous studies, selenium supplementation considerably increased the concentration of mercury in the blood of offspring after maternal exposure of rats to methylmercury, whereas whole-body retention and organ deposition of mercury in mice were unaffected. The present study in mice, which involved exposure for 5 weeks to a low dose of me

Fish has many health benefits but is also the most common source of methylmercury. The bioavailability of methylmercury in fish may be affected by other meal components. In this study, the effect of green tea on the bioavailability of methylmercury from an oral bolus of fish muscle tissue was studied in rats and compared to a water treated control group and a group treated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), a compound used medically to chelate mercury. Rats were given a single oral dose of fish tissue via gavage and one of the treatments. Rats were given access to food for 3 h at 12

A new analytical screening technique for the determination of methylmercury and inorganic mercury in hair samples by HPLC-PCO-CVAAS has been developed. It is based on the extraction of mercury compounds by a buffered sodium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate solution, separation by reversed-phase HPLC, post column oxidation by UV-irradiation, reduction with alkaline sodium borohydride, and determination by cold vapour atomic absorption detection. The standard deviation was 7% and recoveries were 90% for both compounds. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) for both compounds was calculated to be about 4 pp

Organic carbon bioreactors provide low-cost, passive treatment of a variety of environmental contaminants but can have undesirable side effects in some cases. This study examines the production of methyl mercury (MeHg) in a streambed bioreactor consisting of 40 m³ of wood chips and designed to treat nitrate (NO₃) in an agricultural drainage ditch in southern Ontario (Avon site). The reactor provides 30 to 100% removal of NO₃-N concentrations of 0.6 to 4.4 mg L(-1), but sulfate (SO₄(2-)) reducing conditions develop when NO₃ removal is complete. Sulfate reducing conditions are known to stimulati

Tests for chemically induced nondisjunction and loss of the sex chromosomes in Drosophila were performed. Of 31 compounds tested four gave rise only to an increase of XO exceptions, indicating the induction of chromosome loss. Six compounds, all known spindle inhibitors (colchicine, organic mercury, lead, and tin compounds) gave rise to an increase both of XXY and XO or of only XXY. The effect by metalloorganic compounds of which methylmercury was studied particularly closely, follows a peculiar pattern. In females with structurally normal X chromosomes only an increase of XX gametes is obtain

The deposition of organic and inorganic mercury compounds was studied histochemically in the salmon (Salmo salar L.) olfactory system. One group of salmon was given fodder pellets containing methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl, 99 micrograms Hg/g) for 4 weeks. Other groups of fish were exposed to dissolved mercuric chloride (HgCl2, 270 micrograms Hg/liter) for 2, 6, and 12 hr, respectively. In both series of experiments, the radioisotope 203Hg was included in order to determine the accumulation of mercury in the olfactory system. Gamma-spectrometry showed that both mercury compounds accumulated i

1. Environmental toxicology emphasizes the difference from traditional toxicology in which pure compounds of interest are added to purified diets, or injected into the test animals. When the objective is to study the fate and effects of trace elements in the environment, knowledge of the speciation of the elements and their physico-chemical forms is important. 2. Cadmium salts such as the sulfides, carbonates or oxides, are practically insoluble in water. However, these can be converted to water-soluble salts in nature under the influence of oxygen and acids. Chronic exposure to Cd is associat

Methylmercury, biomagnifying through food chains, is highly toxic for aquatic life. Its production and degradation are largely driven by microbial transformations; however, diversity and metabolic activity of mercury transformers, resulting in methylmercury concentrations in environments, remain poorly understood. Microbial mats are thick biofilms where oxic and anoxic metabolisms cooccur, providing opportunities to investigate the complexity of the microbial mercury transformations over contrasted redox conditions. Here, we conducted a genome-resolved metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analys
