The implantation and development of intravenously injected Trichinella spiralis newborn larvae were examined in different strains of inbred mice by determining muscle larvae burden. This was compared to the numbers of muscle larvae that established after a natural infection during which a quantitative assessment of intestinal newborn larvae production was made. The threshold of the jaw-jerk reflex to electrical stimulation of the hard palate was measured in a cross-sectional design using C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice at 2, 8, 20, 25, and 30 mo of age, in order to assess CNS sensitivity as a function of increasing age. The thresholds of DBA/2J mice were higher than those of C57BL/6J mice at all ages tested. No age-related changes in threshold were observed in mice of either strain.

Root resorption (RR) is an unwanted sequela of orthodontic treatment. Despite rigorous investigation, no single factor or group of factors that directly causes RR has been identified. Continuous twenty-four hour EEG recordings were conducted on freely-moving DBA/2 and C57BL/6 inbred mice. The auditory systems of aging LP/J and A/J inbred mice were studied using electrocochleography (AP thresholds) and surface preparation cytocochleography. Both strains showed marked age-related auditory threshold elevation, the LP/J demonstrating more pronounced elevation with age than the A/J. The incidence of febrile convulsions was determined in six inbred strains of mice at four ages. Febrile convulsions were elicited by placing the mice in a cylinder with the air temperature raised to 51 +/- 2 degrees C; this elevated the mouse's body and brain temperature to between 40 and 46 degrees C.
